USA - Appearances by more than 100 of the world's top rock bands made the 2007 edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, 27-29 April, the hottest place to be in Southern California - out-sizzling even the 100 degree temperatures that cloaked the Empire Polo Field venue. PRG supplied the lighting equipment and crew for the main stage at the three-day show, as well as the site lighting for the grounds.

Working with event production manager Ron Doroba, PRG also provided lighting design coordination for the main stage, pulling together designs for headliners Bjork, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine as well as other popular US and international acts into one system.

UK - As the ABTT Theatre Show draws closer (13-14 June, Royal Horticultural Halls, London), its Organisers' - the Association of British Theatre Technicians reports that current pre registrations are indicating another record attendance and that again over 100 exhibitors will showcase a spectrum of technical solutions for everyone involved with housing and presenting the performing arts.

USA - Wybron reports that it has secured three installations of its InfoTrace Control and Management System. These have been installed in Manhattan Theatre Club, Royal Caribbean's newest ship Liberty of the Seas and the permanent installation of Spamalot in Las Vegas.

Denmark - Martin Professional A/S has had a good start to 2007, maintaining the improvements that the company experienced in 2006. Martin increased revenue to DKK 274.5 million (approx. $49.9 million) in the first quarter of 2007, a Q1 record for the company, from DKK 227.5 million (approx. $41.4 million) in the first quarter of 2006, nearly a 21% increase.

Revenue increases were prevalent across all of Martin's key markets with strong demand for both established products such as MAC 2000s and newer products such as the MAC 700 and MAC TW1. Profit before tax for the first quarter of 2007 was DKK 9.1 million (approx. $1.6 million), also a Q1 record, compared to a loss of DKK 3.0 million (approx. $.5 million) in the first quarter of 2006, which was better than expected, says the company.

Germany / China - 110PRO Ltd, the international event supporter and owner of the Stagehands.de and Hostesses.de brands, has announced the appointment of Li Xiuming as assistant to supervisor Shu Zang at the company's Beijing office, which opened in January 2007. Since joining 110PRO Ltd, she has been busy working on research, business development and preparing for the 2008 Olympics.

A native Chinese, Li Xiuming studied at the North China Institute of Aerospace Engineering and the renowned Hebei University in Baoding. She speaks not only English and French, but also Japanese.

"I am very pleased with the new support in the office, we have so much to do and new challenges are popping up everyday," reports Shu Zang, the supervisor in China. As of now, Li Xiuming is the point of contact for production issues in China.

Stagehands.de directs a unique and constantly expand

Sweden - China's most popular annual television event, the CCTV 2007 Spring Festival Evening Gala, is one of the highest rated TV shows both in China and worldwide. CCTV recently presented the event to hundreds of millions of viewers around the world on the eve of the Chinese New Year.

CCTV used a W-DMX wireless transmission system by Wireless Solution Sweden, supplied by Guangzhou Leifull Light & Sound Technology. The three transmitters and three receivers were used with eight High End Systems DL2s and two HOG iPC consoles to create visuals for the show.

W-DMX's anti-interference capability and stability was fully realised during the gala. Lighting designer Qu Guojun commented on the system, "It is rather convenient for lighting engineers to do programming in any position. You don't need to run everywhere with the signal cable. It is also very stable."

Russia - Maly Theatre in Moscow recently celebrated its troupe's 250th anniversary, making it the oldest in Russia. The theatre had even more reason to celebrate this milestone, as it got to show off the first completed phase of its £4.9m (€7.2m) renovation, which includes some of the latest lighting technology from ETC.

In 1756, by decree of Empress Elizabeth, the repertory troupe was formed at Moscow State University and was named 'Moscow Russia Theatre'. In 1780 the troupe moved to the Petrovskii Theatre, next to the Bolshoi, on what is now Theatre Square. In 1824 the theatre became officially known as the Maly, which means 'small' in Russian, because it is smaller than the Bolshoi ('big').

Channel Islands - Fort Regent - originally a Napoleonic fortress dating back to the early 1800s - is Jersey's largest multipurpose centre. It features a 2,500 seat concert venue, vast sporting facilities, the biggest gym on the island and extensive conference and event facilities.

The State of Jersey Department for Education, Sport and Culture commissioned locally based company LED Lighting Technology with the task of designing and installing an energy efficient lighting solution for the main entrance to the complex, to give an inviting and atmospheric welcome to the vast array of visitors - including concert goers, sport players, conference delegates and general public - whilst complementing the stunning old stone vaults.

UK - Simultaneously with the opening of the MA Lighting office in London, Simon Barrett has joined the MA UK team , supporting the technical sales team with Richard Lambert as technical director and looking after administration, workshop logistics as well as exhibitions.

"I have been involved with live theatre in some form or another since the age of seven," says Barrett. "Starting on stage but soon moving into the more interesting back stage roles. What was first a hobby became my career. I am passionate about the live entertainment industry and enjoy immensely being involved."

He graduated from Rose Bruford College with a Lighting Design BA. From 2003 to 2007 he worked with White Light in a number of different roles from sales co-ordinator to marketing assistant as well as training co-ordinator. He has also worked extensively as a lighting director.

Long-time UFC Lighting designer George Smith and ShowlightDesigns, the company he co-owns with Frank Gatto, provide equipment for the U.S.shows. Established in 2001, it rewards students who show exemplary talent in lighting design. The Bursary is judged on a project that the student has produced within the past academic year and awarded by the ALD in conjunction with ETC and The Mousetrap Foundation. Singapore - Robe moving lights took centre stage at the nail-biting final of The Dancefloor 2007, a freestyle dancing competition produced by Mediacorp Studios and broadcast live nationwide on Singapore's Channel 5.

The Dancefloor is Singapore's first televised dancing competition, aimed at finding new dancing talent, and has attracted intense interest and record ratings over its three-month run. The 110 groups and couples initially auditioning were whittled down to 32 contestants who started the series. They were voted for by a combination of panel of judges and the public, ending up with the five finalists.

USA - Hardly a week goes by that Pure nightclub at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas isn't in the pages of national celebrity publications or on national entertainment television. The club's ability to secure the top-name celebrities (Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and many more) and celebrated special events is notable, even among Vegas' competitive nightclub landscape.

USA - Elation has added two high-output fixtures to its Design 36 LED family of lighting products - the Design LED 36WA and Design LED 36 UV. A white and ultraviolet wash respectively, the new DMX-compatible units use advanced LED technology to highlight any object, area or event with drama-enhancing washes of light, says the company.

The Design LED 36WA white wash is designed for video production and other applications where a white light is needed. It includes 30 white LEDs, plus six amber-coloured LEDs, which can be mixed via DMX to create varying degrees of warm and cool white hues. The more amber added, the warmer the white, giving users the ability to create the exact 'shade' of white they desire.

China - The Slek New Air Hostess Show Final, hosted by China Southern and Guangdong TV Station, recently took place in the 800sq.m studio of Guangdong TV Station, with live broadcast by Guangdong TV Satellite Channel and Pearl Channel to all parts of the world. Fifty air hostess candidates presented their individual charms on stage to hundreds of millions of viewers.

UK - 5 Star Cases has supplied XL Video with a specialist flight case for one of its Grass Valley Kayak HD mixer/switcher consoles, which is an integral element of its new HD PPU (portable production unit) systems.

The console case was specified by XL Video's Malcolm Whittall, who worked closely with 5 Star's design team on its development. It is designed so the desk stays sitting inside the case once in position and set up.

5 Star has also made cases for other XL Video consoles in the past, and Whittall comments, "They have an excellent woodworking department, are really flexible and will make things on request - always a great advantage."

The console case is based around 5 Star's Heavy Industrial range of flight cases and is sloped and shaped to the Kayak, featuring all the usual recessed hardware and the XL Video logo and graphics cut into the wood.
