UK - St Lawrence College in Ramsgate prides itself on the cutting edge facilities available to its students, so the recent addition of a dedicated new theatre at the college had to live up to high expectations. The multi-use theatre, which forms part of a 'new build' project at the independent school, and also includes classroom space, a new boardroom and dormitories, can easily seat all 480 senior school pupils at one time with its large main hall and balcony. A main stage dominates the back wall but the space can be adapted to hold performances in the round.

The architect in charge of the new build project contacted the London office of Stage Electrics giving them a blank canvas to design a full audio, video and lighting installation for the building.

France - One of the country's most culturally important theatres, the Théâtre National Populaire (TNP) has been at the heart of contemporary French performing arts for over 90 years. Moving from Paris to Villeurbanne 40 years ago, a comprehensive refurbishment has seen a Yamaha digital audio system installed in the theatre's two performance spaces.

The aptly named Grand Théâtre and Petit Théâtre feature auditoriums seating 667 and 252 respectively, alongside rehearsal rooms and other facilities. After major refurbishment of the buildings, Vénissieux-based Scenetec was contracted to design and install the new technical infrastructure in both venues.

"Before the refurbishment, the auditoriums were more-or-less still as they had been in the 1970s, so it was the ideal opportunity to completely update the technical specification to modern standar

"We needed a complete solutions company for lighting and visuals ... and HSL was a great choice," he states.

UK - British rockers Level 42 have been living up to their 1984 album Standing in the Light by performing under a rig of Clay Paky Alpha Spot HPE 700s at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Lighting designer Yenz Nyholm says they form a key element in his lighting design: "We're only transporting 12 spots in the rig, which is not a lot especially when you get into big venues. The output you get with a Clay Paky is really striking for a 700W lamp. The output and the optics were the main reasons for choosing the Alpha Spots HPEs, and also the fact that they move incredibly fast."

The strength, versatility and nimble nature of the Alpha Spots have enabled Nyholm to build a look for the show which really complements the band's image: "The main thing I'm using with the spots is the colour - I use a lot of very slow colour fades. Obviously it's got to be a CMY fixture,

UK - Following popular demand, the LTM Motor School is back. Starting with two course dates in February 2013, the LTM team will be teaching a two day course on hoist maintenance and general theory. The course offers participants the opportunity to strip down and rebuild a LoadGuard hoist, under expert instruction from the LTM training staff.

Past motor schools have proven popular and this is the first course of its kind covering the LoadGuard hoists. The course has been introduced after customer demand as the hoist has been on the market for over four years now and clients and end users are keen to understand the workings of the LoadGuard.

The course will also cover general electrical theory, correct operation procedure, maintenance, troubleshooting and health & safety, giving a good overall view of hoist theory to participants.

The two two-day courses are being held at Adli

UK - An Allen & Heath iLive digital mixing system is currently on a national tour of the UK with the hit musical, Bugle Boy, which traces the life, career and mysterious disappearance of the late bandleader and composer Glenn Miller.

The system is based around an iLive-T112 Control Surface and an iDR-48 MixRack fitted with a MADI network card.

"I first saw the modular iLive system at a PLASA show a few years ago, so when the compact fixed-format iLive-T Series came along, I decided to take the plunge and purchase a system. It has eliminated a 20U rack of outboard at FOH, made the FOH footprint much smaller and made fit-up/get-out times so much quicker. The get-out on this tour typically takes less than an hour, with FOH being able to be packed away in ten minutes," comments Andy Onion, Bugle Boy's sound designer and operator.

In the FOH rack is a rackmount P

UK - When Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (BOVTS) required an upgrade from their ageing prompt desk they turned to Stage Electrics who have successfully been building stage management consoles for over 30 years.

"When I joined BOVTS I realised that the students were using cue lights that would break and were not easy to programme. I felt the students needed the chance to work with exactly the same systems that they would be using once they graduated. This brought me to Stage Electrics," commented Louise Matthews, production stage management supervisor, BOVTS.

Working closely with Matthews, Stage Electrics designed and developed their new table top stage management console. Ideal for use in schools, touring shows and professional theatres; this flagship portable desk concept is proven to be a popular choice across a variety of venues such as East 15 Acting School and B

Provided by Creative Production & Design of Austin, Texas, 114 Chauvet Professional MVP 18 and 96 MVP 12 modular video panels made up for an impressive display, conceived in layers of video walls with a 3D feel. "The versatility of the MVP 18 panels makes it easy to use in many of our applications," said Daniel Wyatt, project manager of Creative Production & Design.

For high-resolution graphics 18 of the MVP 12 video panels worked as the façade for the DJ booth, while a 6-by-13 video wall of the same panels was placed in the background. In between these walls, 11 high columns of one-by-10 MVP 18 vide

Slovenia - Ljubljana based Intralite is a leading Slovenian lighting rental company working in all areas of the industry - festivals, concerts, corporate, theatre and TV - and is committed to offering the very best service and the latest technologies to its clients.

It was established in 2007 by Ales Pirman, who first bought Robe moving lights in 2003 when running his previous lighting company, which was a smaller one-person operation.

The first purchases were 575 XT Washes and ColorSpot 575 ATs which were such a success that he continued down the Robe route after he set up Intralite.

Australia - So far this year, Coda Audio has taken delivery of 50 channels of Shure UHF-R wireless microphone systems to use on their elite events such as The Sydney Festival. Michael Wilkie, director of Coda Audio, decided upon the Shure UHF-R system as it is widely accepted and trusted in the industry.

"The upcoming change in the frequency window of what we're allowed to use in Australia was an important factor in the purchases," he remarked. "The 780 - 820 MHz range will become progressively unusable or illegal to use in Australia at a certain point in the future so we needed to change at some point."

Having used the Shure UHF-R systems extensively over the past few months, Wilkie reports that their performance has been terrific.

"They're a lot more flexible and easier to set up than their predecessor," he said. "The IR to program the be

USA - Lighting designer Jason Rothberg has selected the Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800 fixtures for the current tour of indietronica band Passion Pit. Atomic Lighting of Lititz, Pennsylvania supplied the lights, which are garnering raves from Rothberg on the road.

Passion Pit is continuing its national tour after releasing its second LP, Gossamer. More dates are planned for 2013.

"I've never toured with Clay Paky lights, but these have been fantastic," Rothberg reports. "They're different from other lights of this type. They are smaller and brighter, and the zoom is amazing. They can go from a super tight beam to a super fat beam in an instant. They're brighter than anything else we've encountered."

Rothberg, who is also the tour's lighting programmer, had previous positive experiences with Clay Paky 700 fixtures but calls the 800 units "even be
