UK - In the week the movie was nominated for five Oscars, the UK premiere of award-winning director Quentin Tarantino's latest hit Django Unchained took place in London's Leicester Square.

Premier, who produced the premiere, brought in XL Events to supply the visual elements for the 'red-carpet' arrivals including stars Jamie Foxx, Samuel L Jackson, and Tarantino himself.

The special Django Unchained white carpet spanned the top side of Leicester Square leading to the door of the cinema. Alongside the carpet, XL Events hung six vertical screens each made up of 12 tiles of Pixled's lightweight, high-brightness F-12 LED. The screens displayed images of characters from the movie, as well as spelling out DJANGO.

At the far end of the carpet a stage was situated which was used for celebrity interviews conducted by Alex Zane, host of the Guest List movie show

Germany - Audio specialist Sennheiser showcases its passion for sound through their new digital magazine, the 'Blue Stage' iPad app, which offers interactive storytelling coupled with explorative navigation. A new edition is released every month in order to examine the subject of sound from a different perspective. The Sennheiser iPad app is free and is available now, in English, from the iTunes store. Other languages available are German, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese. A Russian translation is also planned for the near future.

Australia - So far this year, Coda Audio has taken delivery of 50 channels of Shure UHF-R wireless microphone systems to use on their elite events such as The Sydney Festival. Michael Wilkie, director of Coda Audio, decided upon the Shure UHF-R system as it is widely accepted and trusted in the industry.

"The upcoming change in the frequency window of what we're allowed to use in Australia was an important factor in the purchases," he remarked. USA - Lighting designer Jason Rothberg has selected the Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800 fixtures for the current tour of indietronica band Passion Pit. Atomic Lighting of Lititz, Pennsylvania supplied the lights, which are garnering raves from Rothberg on the road.

Passion Pit is continuing its national tour after releasing its second LP, Gossamer. More dates are planned for 2013.

"I've never toured with Clay Paky lights, but these have been fantastic," Rothberg reports. "They're different from other lights of this type. They are smaller and brighter, and the zoom is amazing. They can go from a super tight beam to a super fat beam in an instant. They're brighter than anything else we've encountered."

USA - The World's Largest Disco is a 7,000-person dance party featuring DJs spinning classic '70s tracks through a 300,000W sound system. Held at the Buffalo Convention Center in New York, the annual event, which traces its roots to the 1970s, is a charity fundraiser held by Conesus Fest for Charity to raise funds for Camp Good Days and Special Times, a summer camp for children with cancer. This year the dancing was fuelled by 84 JBL VERTEC line array loudspeakers.

"If you're doing the sound for The World's Largest Disco, the system has to be no-holds-barred," said Ray DiBiase, president of Northeastern Production Systems, which provided the sound, lighting and video systems for the event. "The music is the reason everyone was there and we had to move 7,000 people with loud, bass-heavy sound in a room that's the biggest dance floor in New York State."

UAE - In December 2012, the two worlds largest Barco video screens were installed on a part of The Dubai Mall Metro Link Travelator project.

Both screens, one on the Downtown side and one on the Creek side of the fly-over, are 20m wide and 12 m high.

The Metro link of 820m is one of the longest pedestrian walkways linking the Dubai Metro directly to the Burj Khalifa/The Dubai Mall and is expected to significantly enhance the convenience of visitors to the mall and the Burj Khalifa.

At its peak capacity the travelators can carry over 13.500 people per hour. The complete travelator project was developed by the Emaar Properties PJSC.

New Zealand - Ten years ago, the first of many copies of LightFactory, the PC-based control system, was put on sale. Founder and CEO Martin Searancke developed LightFactory out of a passion for the industry and a knack for writing code. Today, the control system enjoys worldwide success, which is a credit to its power and economy, as well as to the hard work of its founder and employees (one of which is his wife, Helen).

Before LightFactory, Searancke had co-founded a dot com company and then invested the profits in what was then his hobby of lighting design. Before long, the new company was thriving.
