USA - Stuffed animals aren’t something usually associated with a band like hardcore metal giants Killswitch Engage. Still, the fluffy playthings helped create a sense of intimacy this summer when the Grammy-nominated quintet recorded a video of their latest album Atonement.
The band, which normally plays at jam-packed venues, was performing at an empty 2,200-capacity venue, The Palladium in Worcester, MA, for the video. To encourage them to look out into the “audience” despite the vacant hall, their long-time lighting designer, Cody James hid stuffed unicorns in the seats.
That worked for the band. As for the fans watching the video, James fostered a powerful, you-are-there feeling by unleashing a torrent of genuine concert looks with help from a beefy colle

USA - For years, fans flocked to the University of Tampa’s Bob Martinez Athletics Centre to witness excellence on the court. But no matter how many national titles Spartans supporters and athletes enjoyed - including three NCAA Division II women’s volleyball crowns (2006, 2014, and ‘18) - there was no getting around at least one major disappointment on perennial display at the Bob Martinez Athletics Centre: A failing sound system.
That is why, when the University of Tampa undertook renovations of the 36-year-old, 3,400-seat arena that the Spartans’ men’s and women’s basketball teams also call home, it opted for a complete overhaul of its audio capabilities.
And when Regional AV integration firm AvTek introduced Spartans athletic department members to Danley Sound Labs components, the University of Tampa had finally found a sound to match the quality of wha

Europe - The debate over what LED system produces the best white is a difficult one to resolve. Is crisp brightness and power most important? Or the ability to create a variety of shades and deeper colours? In the end, it all depends on your needs.
Alistair Smyth and Frederik Afif on the 9 September Elation Coffee Break will scrutinize the Fuze Spot and Fuze Profile with framing, versatile LED moving heads with RGBMA colour mixing systems that can mix any shade of white a designer desires, or just as easily mix deep saturates or soft-field pastels.
The Fuze Spot and Fuze Profile’s carefully tuned RGBMA LEDs and high CRI (92) ensure accurate color mixing and color rendering while delivering a powerful white output of over 10,000 lumens. Shades can be fine-tuned to match the environment in a variety of ways - virtual colour wheel, virtual color temperature, magenta/gr

Light Night Leeds - Digital lightning bolts and a light sculpture of a giant endangered marine mammal are among the spectacles set to light up Leeds as part of the city's annual Light Night festival. The two-day event starting on 14 October will see some of the city's well-known buildings and landmarks lit up with light projections - and this year's theme is nature and climate change.
More than 40 installations and artworks will be on show including a large-scale replica of the Earth by artist Luke Jerram and an illumination of lightning bolts on the front of Leeds Civic Hall by artist Seb Lee-Delisle, the city council said.
Last year a considerably slimmed-down festival saw lasers mounted on seven city centre buildings because of coronavirus and social distancing rules. Organisers say this year's event "will mark a return to a more familiar format" but the prog

USA - The church building of Christ King Parish in the western Milwaukee suburb of Wauwatosa has been through over half a century of construction, reconstruction, renovation and updates. But the one that likely may have made the most difference was the recent replacement of its old sound system with a new L-Acoustics A10i array and Syva loudspeaker enclosures installed over the summer by the local office of Clearwing Systems Integration.
The building, which opened in January of 1957, was designed to seat 1,200 parishioners. However, like many older Catholic house of worship designs, the preponderance of marble, glass and hardwood made for a highly reflective sonic environment that was highly challenging for music, and especially for speech. As is often the case in these types of spaces, speech is sourced at the altar in the front while music emanates from the rear choir and

UK - With the new month-long South Facing Festival, music has returned to the Crystal Palace Bowl, scene of legendary rock shows in the 1970s. The site’s revival has been led by The Crystal Palace Trust after securing substantial funding.
The stage this time may have been built on a floating pontoon - in front of the original stage - and the venue capped at 5,000, but in the hands of festival director Marcus Weedon, and with the equally experienced Loudsound providing site and production logistics, the event was in safe hands.
Capital Sound extended this duty of care by deploying Martin Audio’s MLA technology, which ensured that sound would be contained within the bowl, avoiding any bleed to the nearby residential area.
Over the month, acts as diverse as The Streets, Supergrass, Corinne Bailey Rae, Dizzee Rascal and English National Opera graced the stage, a

“After joining forces with DiGiCo in 2018 and the release of the workflow integration for its consoles, more and more monitor engineers have implemented a KLANG immersive IEM processor into their workflows,” says KLANG’s co-founder Dr. Pascal Dietrich. “At first, only the most critical channels for the main artists were sent through the processor, but the wish for more input channels, and thus new creative and organisational possibilities, grew further.”
Designed with monitor engineers and fixed installations in mind, KLANG:konductor satisfies that demand with a high-end mixing system that can deliver 16 immersive mixes and process

UK - The Lighting Programme, an opportunity for graduate lighting designers and technicians, has announced the participants of its 2021/22 edition.
The programme is run by SLX, a lighting and production company based in Bristol. It aims to foster young, upcoming talent within the industry - especially important in the post-Covid era, where many are struggling to recruit.
This year, five students were selected instead of the initial offer of four places, due to the exceptionally high standard of applications.
The five students all graduate next year, and will gain experience working a number of jobs at venues around the UK, the first of which is a fit-up inside the London Palladium. They will also be introduced by SLX to key industry figures at events such as PLASA/ABTT London, as well as having access to equipment for use on their course projects.

Japan - The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics opening and closing ceremonies almost certainly represented the largest deployment of Optocore audio network devices ever seen.
This was according to Norwest head of special projects, Andrew Marsh, whose company has a long pedigree of fashioning vast digital broadcast networks for spectacular Games Opening and Closing ceremonies, built around Optocore devices.
To give an idea of scale, he says, “The system we provided for our client, Hibino Corporation, comprised just under 1000 audio signals transported on each main and backup network.”
As usual, Norwest duplicated the 21-node system to provide full redundancy. “And we used every one of them,” said Marsh, “along with our usual set of HP switches in RSTP, using our spare pairs of fibre.” These switches controlled the entire audio system at multiple field locatio

“Alan was always concerned about the welfare of his colleagues, and it is wonderful that Unusual Rigging has sponsored this course in his memory,” says Backup chair, John Simpson. “We are not good at asking for help or asking others if they need help. We want to change that.”
In general, the role of a mental health first aider is to be a point of contact for anyone who is experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress. This interaction can range from having an initial conversation through to

UK - After two years PLASA Show has finally returned to Olympia London for three days of long awaited networking, learning and discovery. The show floor is filling up with eager visitors and the seminar and training programme is in full swing.
Always an unmissable feature is Robe’s stand (E19) which runs regular presentations of their latest lighting fixtures. This year’s design is entitled The Show Goes On, a nod to the live sector’s challenges throughout COVID. The focus will be on Robe’s TE – Transferable Engine technology. Plus, visitors can look forward to seeing the recently launched T2 along with a preview of the not-yet-released T11. Also in action is the Forte, Robe’s highest powered LED moving light.
The show floor is brimming with new products, many have been awaiting release or were developed throughout the pandemic. On the audio front

“Getting back on tour has been a crazy experience. After a year and a half off, all of us had gotten a bit rusty,” Tom Lyon, UltraSound senior systems engineer and FOH engineer for Dave Matthews Band, said. “Luckily, we scheduled a few days with just the band
