USA - Stuffed animals aren’t something usually associated with a band like hardcore metal giants Killswitch Engage. Still, the fluffy playthings helped create a sense of intimacy this summer when the Grammy-nominated quintet recorded a video of their latest album Atonement.
The band, which normally plays at jam-packed venues, was performing at an empty 2,200-capacity venue, The Palladium in Worcester, MA, for the video. To encourage them to look out into the “audience” despite the vacant hall, their long-time lighting designer, Cody James hid stuffed unicorns in the seats.

USA - For years, fans flocked to the University of Tampa’s Bob Martinez Athletics Centre to witness excellence on the court. But no matter how many national titles Spartans supporters and athletes enjoyed - including three NCAA Division II women’s volleyball crowns (2006, 2014, and ‘18) - there was no getting around at least one major disappointment on perennial display at the Bob Martinez Athletics Centre: A failing sound system.

Serbia - On its website, Kaleidoskop Kulture describes its mission as one of promoting “a unique image of diversity”. A look at this ambitious project’s itinerary is enough to convince anyone that this is no idle claim. Just about every form of human creativity is displayed, studied, and discussed at the event, which began on 2 September in the city centre of Novi Sad on the banks of the Danube.
The creative scope of this ambitious cultural project was on full display at its opening ceremony, which was attended by an impressive assemblage of dignitaries, including Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister Maja Gojković. Europe - DTS Lighting has announced a new exclusive partnership with German distributor BT.innotec for its entire product line.
BT.innotec was founded in 2021 by Michael Timmer and Raphael Berndzen, who both have worked in the event industry for years, while developing a high level of know-how in sales of professional event technology. Product manager Malte Kaß also joined the BT.innotec team in August.
Founders Timmer and Berndzen say they’re happy to tie the partnership with DTS, as “it has grown over the years and has become one of the industry leaders in professional lighting design, and their portfolio includes both, high-quality lights for the event sector and sophisticated lighting solutions for architectural projects.”

Light Night Leeds - Digital lightning bolts and a light sculpture of a giant endangered marine mammal are among the spectacles set to light up Leeds as part of the city's annual Light Night festival. The two-day event starting on 14 October will see some of the city's well-known buildings and landmarks lit up with light projections - and this year's theme is nature and climate change.
More than 40 installations and artworks will be on show including a large-scale replica of the Earth by artist Luke Jerram and an illumination of lightning bolts on the front of Leeds Civic Hall by artist Seb Lee-Delisle, the city council said.

UK - The team behind ‘A Light Walk’, which will take place from 20-24 September, has announced details of the fundraising mission and the ways in which everyone can get involved.
A Light Walk will see Chauvet’s Sam Bowden and ALPD Lumière working group chair Charlotte Burton walk from The Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford Upon Avon to the National Theatre on London’s South Bank, a total distance of 162km (101 miles) which will be completed in just five days. Members of the ALPD’s executive committee and other members of the Lumière Scheme working group will be joining the walk for individual days or remotely.
Departing from The Royal Shakespeare Company on day one, the walkers will complete a distance of 38.35km. Day two starts at Bloxham and ends 30.33km further at Bicester. With day three, the walkers will pace the 37.26km to Great Missenden and on

USA - The church building of Christ King Parish in the western Milwaukee suburb of Wauwatosa has been through over half a century of construction, reconstruction, renovation and updates. But the one that likely may have made the most difference was the recent replacement of its old sound system with a new L-Acoustics A10i array and Syva loudspeaker enclosures installed over the summer by the local office of Clearwing Systems Integration.
The building, which opened in January of 1957, was designed to seat 1,200 parishioners. However, like many older Catholic house of worship designs, the preponderance of marble, glass and hardwood made for a highly reflective sonic environment that was highly challenging for music, and especially for speech. UK - With the new month-long South Facing Festival, music has returned to the Crystal Palace Bowl, scene of legendary rock shows in the 1970s. The site’s revival has been led by The Crystal Palace Trust after securing substantial funding.

UK - The winners of the 2021 PLASA Awards for Innovation were announced last night at PLASA Show as it made its return to Olympia London. The Awards, run association with LSi Magazine, are respected industry-wide for celebrating pioneering technology, through new materials or methods that increase safety, efficiency or performance.

UK - The ALPD exhibiting at this year’s PLASA Show with its new name and identity. The ALPD is located in the ABTT Show Hub on stand ABTT17.
The stand is hosted by ALPD team representatives all on hand to talk to current members and those wishing to join.
ALPD Members can also make use of the Aaptle Lounge, also located in the ABTT Hub. Aaptle was formed over lockdown and brings together many of the different associations and groups, including the ALPD, that work in our industry. UK - The Lighting Programme, an opportunity for graduate lighting designers and technicians, has announced the participants of its 2021/22 edition.
The programme is run by SLX, a lighting and production company based in Bristol. It aims to foster young, upcoming talent within the industry - especially important in the post-Covid era, where many are struggling to recruit.
This year, five students were selected instead of the initial offer of four places, due to the exceptionally high standard of applications.
The five students all graduate next year, and will gain experience working a number of jobs at venues around the UK, the first of which is a fit-up inside the London Palladium. They will also be introduced by SLX to key industry figures at events such as PLASA/ABTT London, as well as having access to equipment for use on their course projects.

Japan - The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics opening and closing ceremonies almost certainly represented the largest deployment of Optocore audio network devices ever seen.
This was according to Norwest head of special projects, Andrew Marsh, whose company has a long pedigree of fashioning vast digital broadcast networks for spectacular Games Opening and Closing ceremonies, built around Optocore devices.
To give an idea of scale, he says, “The system we provided for our client, Hibino Corporation, comprised just under 1000 audio signals transported on each main and backup network.”
As usual, Norwest duplicated the 21-node system to provide full redundancy. “And we used every one of them,” said Marsh, “along with our usual set of HP switches in RSTP, using our spare pairs of fibre.” These switches controlled the entire audio system at multiple field locatio

UK - After two years PLASA Show has finally returned to Olympia London for three days of long awaited networking, learning and discovery. The show floor is filling up with eager visitors and the seminar and training programme is in full swing.

USA - CityHope Church in Mobile, Alabama’s metro area has just made another leap forward with its summer installation of a new DiGiCo Quantum338 console at its flagship Malbis campus, just north of Daphne.
It’s the centrepiece of a larger audio upgrade that also includes two integrated DMI-Dante cards, an Orange Box interface for MADI, integrated DMI-KLANG card for in-ear monitor mixing, SD-Rack fitted with 32-bit “Ultimate Stadius” mic preamps, SD-MiNi Rack used for broadcast audio-for-video I/O (including video switcher, computers, and lobby audio-processor feeds), and DiGiGrid rackmount Quad MADI interface that allows recording of up to 128 channels at 96 kHz. The Q338 console, SD-Racks and KLANG audio are all on a newly-installed Optocore loop network.

USA - The Dave Matthews Band is back on the road for their annual North American Summer Tour with stops at sheds and amphitheatres across the country from late July through November. Longtime rental partner UltraSound of Petaluma, CA has once again supplied a Meyer Sound system based on Lyon linear line array loudspeakers.
This year marks Dave Matthews Band’s 30th anniversary as well as 25 years of UltraSound and Meyer Sound’s collaboration with the band. After more than a year and a half without performances, the UltraSound and Dave Matthews Band production teams were eager to bring music back to fans.
