ETC Selador fixtures light the Royal Danish Playhouse

Denmark - ETC's Danish dealer Bico has replaced 40 ageing and energy-inefficient halogen fixtures which light the stage tower of the Royal Danish Playhouse - with just 17 ETC Selador Desire D60XTI Lustr+ LED fixtures.

Bico's lighting designer Hans Henrik Schmidt says, "Originally, the tower was lit by some 40kW of lighting; the management were keen to reduce power consumption, so cut that by half, but were then, of course, disappointed with the output quality.

"After talking to us about how they could obtain the same high quality of lighting, but with lower power usage, we offered them 17 of the outdoor ETC Desire fixtures, which use a combined total of little more than two kilowatts."

Permanent projection mapped show for Blackpool

UK - 'Projection mapping' has become an industry buzz word in the last couple of years and the Blackpool illuminations - among the world's most historic festivals of light is home to the first permanent projection mapped show in the UK, scheduled to run for the full two months / 66 day 'Illuminations' period each year from now on.

LightPool is a collaboration between London-based Ross Ashton and The Projection Studio who storyboarded and created the content, and Edinburgh based War Productions whose Alistair Young produced the technical design and supplied the hardware and control.

The two companies have worked together on previous projects, and Alistair suggested that he and Ross join forces to pool their extensive knowledge and experience of projection mapping monuments to answer a tender put out by Blackpool Council.

USA - At LDI, ETC presented a cheque for $27,405.58 to Behind the Scenes, which reflected ongoing proceeds from sales of ETC's iRFR and aRFR (Radio Focus Remote) application for iOS and Android devices.

On presenting the cheque, David Lincecum, vice president of marketing, commented, "When we started this, we never imagined that the sale of this app could produce over $233,000 for such a great cause. An important part of the ETC culture is being of service to each other, especially in times of need. We are very humbled by the large impact this small app has produced for the members of our community who have needed a little help."

USA - The Media Networking Alliance (MNA) - the professional AV industry alliance established to promote awareness and uptake of AES67 - is exhibiting at the forthcoming 139th AES International Convention in New York. A major attraction on the alliance's booth will be a live demonstration of audio networking interoperability, featuring 22 currently available networked-audio devices, from different manufacturers employing various audio network platforms.

AES67-specific extensions to the different network platforms provide for the common interchange of digital audio between them. In the instance of the demo, digital audio signals will be interoperable between devices employing Dante, Livewire, Q-LAN and RAVENNA. UK - On Saturday 24 October, Central Hall Westminster was part of a worldwide initiative to mark the 70th anniversary of the formation of the United Nations (UN). The venue joined iconic buildings and monuments such as the Great Wall of China, the Empire State Building and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, by projecting blue light across its facade, with blue being the official colour of the UN.

UK - PRG XL Video continued their long relationship with Creamfields by supplying a wide range of video, lighting and rigging solutions across multiple stages at the 2015 festival - the biggest Creamfields to date.

With the festival growing in popularity every year, Creamfields producer LarMac LIVE are working to create a bigger and better experience for the audience at each event.

Website Code - A code of good practice aimed at websites that resell tickets is to be drawn up following "continuing uncertainties" about the secondary market. The code is being developed by the Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers with the aim of providing a "reliable guarantee" that customers gain entry to the event for which they purchased tickets, or receive a refund.

Although it is still being developed, STAR said the code could include prohibiting the listing of speculative tickets by sellers, details of a resale agent's policies and procedures if an event were cancelled or postponed, and the creation of a "trusted environment where customers feel confident in listing tickets".

USA - Focusrite has announced the launch of a new product in its popular RedNet range of Dante audio-over-IP products: the RedNet AM2 stereo audio monitoring unit. The new product is being shown on Booth 218 at the AES 139th Convention in New York, October 29 - November 1, 2015.

RedNet AM2 is a Dante-compatible stereo monitoring unit combining headphone and line outputs for flexible monitoring of signals sourced from the Dante network. UK - Every summer, some of the biggest names in Arabic music congregate at London's Grosvenor hotel for a series of concerts. Subfrantic Production Services provides the full technical production for the shows, which this year featured two Yamaha digital mixers for the first time.

Subfrantic has been involved with the shows for the past five years, which this year featured singers including Mohamed Abdu, Rabeh Sakr, Majid Al Mohandes, Balquees, Ellisa, Nahwa and Shatha Hassoun. All the performances are backed by an Arabic orchestra.

"It's not an orchestra in the western sense, it features a lot of traditional Arabic instruments," says Subfrantic technical director Sean Murphy. "It's a specialised sound and the setup has to be right. As a company, we spent the past five years developing a unique understanding of these requirements."

Norway - Lindbak AS Gjovik has recently completed the installation of an audio system for the new multi-purpose atrium of Storhamar High School in Hamar, Norway. The large atrium will serve an important function as a meeting point for teachers and students, as well as providing a valuable new space for AV presentations, cultural and educational events and open meetings.

Built between two existing main buildings and bounded by a lunch area and library, the new atrium measures 25 by 35m and has a ceiling height of 11m. "With such a ceiling height and with the reflective surfaces of the atrium it was clear the best solution would be a high quality line source column system," said system designer Bj°rn Fjeld of Norsk Lydteknikk AS.

USA - The brief for the Queens Ground and Sunken Garden stages at this year's Nocturnal Wonderland was straightforward enough - to "push the limits" - and that's exactly what Visions Lighting and SJ Lighting did with eye-popping lighting and video designs that featured Elation Professional LED and Platinum Series fixtures.

The massive EDM gathering, produced by Insomniac Events, celebrated its 20th Anniversary 3-6 September at the San Manuel Amphitheatre & Grounds in San Bernardino, California. Stage design for the Queens Ground and Sunken Garden stages was by production design specialists SJ Lighting with production company Visions Lighting, who has been involved in a number of top festivals this summer, supplying the lighting and video gear.

UK - Philips Selecon and Showline LED luminaires have performed a range of crucial lighting roles whilst complementing a traditional tungsten rig on macabre musical The Addams Family at the John McIntosh Arts Theatre in London.

The Wimbledon Light Operatic Society production was based on an original story by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, which has been described as an 'off-beat take on 19th century gothic'. The plot line is a ghoulish romp, involving ancestors of the family making their annual visit from the grave only for chaos to ensue.

UK - Bristol-based lighting and visuals specialist Fineline Lighting is supplying LED screens and supports for the Rugby World Cup fan zone in picturesque Northernhay Gardens in Exeter city centre.

The venue - which also includes food stalls - is being facilitated by Exeter City Council. It enables rugby fans without a ticket to Sandy Park or other games to enjoy the buzz plus all the thrills and spills of the 2015 Rugby World Cup match days as they unfold on the big screen in this convenient location in an official Rugby World Cup host city.

There are two video screens, the main one comprising 63 panels of Lighthouse R7 screen totalling around 50sq.m, which is flown on a truss installed towards the back of a Serious Stages 16 metre Supernova stage. There's capacity in front of this for up to 5000 sports fans.

Italy - On 1-2 October Yamaha Commercial Audio hosted its first symposium, in Milan. Titled High Quality Sound in Architectural Applications, the symposium attracted over 70 systems integrators, theatre consultants and IT/AV consultants from 15 European countries. It combined keynote presentations from leading audio industry figures with visits to three high profile Milan installations which rely on Yamaha Commercial Audio products.

Hosted in the Milano Congressi Exhibition Centre (MiCo), the keynotes covered a range of important topics relevant to installed sound design.
