Spain - When Barcelona-based sound contractor and XTA distributor Adagio SA was commissioned to design the audio system for the 4,000-capacity B3 multi-room dance venue in Dos Hermanas (near Seville), the demanding audio specification meant that XTA system processing was appropriate.

The club's owner, José Miguel Losada, wanted a state-of-the-art audio system delivering ultimate quality sound, so Adagio SA's Bernat Camacho and Jordi Rosselló specified XTA processors and MC2 amplifiers to control and drive the Martin Audio loudspeaker systems.

The new B3 venue has three floors and the audio system was required to be divided into four discrete zones - the main entrance, main dancefloor, Buda Chillout Room (with its associated entrance) and the White Room.

Normally the main entrance and dancefloor work as a single zone, the music from the main dancefloor being fed to bo

UK - The Footbridge at Princes Dock in Liverpool is both an interesting and attractive structure, and is strategically placed in the heart of an area of the city undergoing significant commercial development. That development includes the new Leeds to Liverpool Canal link, which will pass underneath the bridge, and a recently opened cruise liner facility. As such, when the development work at Princes Dock is complete, the Princes Dock Footbridge will become a gateway to Liverpool for visitors arriving on transatlantic cruise liners.

Following discussions with the site owners, Princes Dock Development Company, lighting designer Graham Festenstein received a commission to develop a lighting scheme for the 'wishbone' structure. The bridge's new dynamic and interactive lighting, installed by W T Jenkins, is an eye-catching addition to the Liverpool dockside.

UK - With over 200 acts playing on 12 stages over three days, Big Chill is rapidly becoming one of the key events of the UK summer festival season. Held at Eastnor Castle Deer Park, near Worcester, this year was the first that Dobson Sound Productions had supplied the audio infrastructure for all the festival stages. And the company took the opportunity to also make Big Chill 'all digital' for the first time.

Five DiGiCo consoles were deployed, a D5 at front-of-house on the Open Air stage, plus D5s at both FOH and monitors on the Castle Stage and D1s at FOH on the Sanctuary Stage and in the Big Chill Nights tent.

"As we were providing sound for all the stages, it made sense to follow our instincts and go digital throughout," says Dobson Sound managing director Paul Dobson. "It was a bit of a step, but it went very well.

"We chose to use the DiGiCo console

Austria - Vienna's leading entertainment venue, the Arena Wien, recently purchased two Allen & Heath iLive digital consoles as part of an overhaul of its audio systems. Vienna Arena is one of the city's largest and most established live performance centres. With four separate areas, the complex plays host to a wide range of events, from international artists such as James Brown, Crowded House, Dinosaur Jr., and Gnarls Barkley, to film screenings and theatrical presentations.

Having recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, Vienna Arena marked the milestone with a full audio upgrade to its largest hall. In addition to a new Meyer Sound speaker system, the decision was made to replace the Grosse Halle's existing analogue mixers with an iLive system - comprising an iDR10 mix rack and iLive-144 control surface - at FOH, and a second identical iLive system to manage monitors.

Italy - After more than a year of anticipation the new Fiat 500 was introduced to the public. The international press conference and the car's official presentation to the retailers took place at PalaIsozaki in Turin. The main technical feature of the presentation was the quantity of projectors employed to cover 1,400sq.m of screens. MA Lighting and Brother, Brother & Sons products helped to make the event run smoothly.

Various models of Barco projectors were used, depending on the different requirements: six FLM 18HD for the front screen, two FLM 20+ for the ceiling screen and nine SLM 12s. Six of these projectors were mounted on the Brother, Brother & Sons v-Base yokes for the floor screen. The precision of the v-Base allowed precise and repeatable pixel-to-pixel overlapping for the double full HD projection from a height of 25m. All v-Base yokes were controlled via DMX from a

Japan - Just three hours north east of Tokyo, the Hitachi seaside National Park is home to Japan's most popular three-day festival event. The secret to Rock In Japan Festival (RIJF) is arguably its insistence on Japanese artists only; that and an idyllic location on the site of this former air force base in the Ibaraki prefecture.

Organised by Rockin'on, a Japanese music magazine, the festival has grown since its inauguration in August 2000 from one stage over two days, to four stages and three days, this year pulling in an audience of over 147,000. Editor in Chief Mr. Yoichi Shibuya is the event producer and he also manages Countdown Japan, another popular festival staged at the end of year. It was here, in 2006, that his audience first got to hear the new J-Series from d&b audiotechnik.

"We first heard the new system in 2006," explained Mr. Shuzo Fujii, head

Switzerland - For the its second sold-out year the Basel Tattoo used a TiMax delay matrix and showcontrol software to make the marching players' audio track their stage movements, and to help eliminate musical timing problems due to the large scale of the performance area.

An import of the Edinburgh military pageant which has also used TiMax for the last six years, the Basel Tattoo is staged in the open air in front of the 18th century Kaserne Hof barracks next to the Rhine. The performers are spread out over a 70m x 25m parade arena surrounded by audience seating on three sides.

Specified by Swiss sound designer Thomas Strebel, a 16-input 24-output TiMax Rack System was fed from eight groups of a Yamaha PM5D console which received up to 32 radio mics plus CD and harddisk playback sources for various dance troupes. Another PM5D was located in the temporary Basel Tattoo Studios

UK - The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff used Arena Seating facilities to boost its capacity to 50,000 for a record-breaking indoor crowd at the highly anticipated World Title superfight between Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler on 3 November.

The super-middleweight fight attracted a global television audience and the biggest indoor crowd that the UK has ever seen. Welshman Joe Calzaghe returned to Cardiff in front of home fans for his 21st title defence, during which a unanimous decision declared him reigning champion once again, retaining his title and the WBO crown he has held for over 10 years.

Sports Network, organisers of the event, maximised the number of seats for the sell-out crowd, while Arena Seating provided nearly 10,000 extra seats for the fight.

Mike Goodall, of production company Ringcraft Boxing Services, contracted Arena Seating to provide an additional 8,800 t

Australia - White Light is continuing its association with the hit musical Billy Elliot as it travels its way around the world, helping it to snow down under by supplying the new Sydney production of the show with White Light Snow Machines.

Based on the movie of the same name, and directed by the film's director, Stephen Daldry with his regular theatre collaborators, designer Ian MacNeil and lighting designer Rick Fisher, Billy Elliot opened at London's Victoria Palace Theatre in early 2005 and continues to play to sold-out houses there. The London production uses a lighting rig supplied by White Light. In addition, White Light worked with the show's design team to create a new falling snow effect that was quiet and reliable enough to be used downstage of the proscenium line.

The result was the White Light Snow Machine. This uses the same paper snow as other esta

UK - Stage Electrics demonstrated the new Bumper Cars on Ice, on a real ice rink together with the smartStand 45 and smartStage 122at the recent Showman's Show.

Ian Tregaskis, head of events for Stage Electrics reflects: "The sun may have shone during the show, but the night before the rain was torrential, the efficiency of our aluminium fold out ice rink system coped easily with the excess water and the rink was frozen solid on Wednesday morning.

"The 'real' ice rink came as a surprise to many visitors. You could see on the faces of visitors as they walked by that they weren't quite sure, it was only when they touched the ice they believed it was real."

The regular demos of the smartStage 45 and smartStand 122 also attracted the crowds who were very impressed with the short set up times and simple construction, says the company. The smartStage 45 is a stage t

UK - David Atkinson Lighting Design (DALD) recently completed the lighting design for a major new exhibition - The Golden Age of Couture at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

The launch of Christian Dior's New Look in 1947 marked the beginning of a momentous decade in fashion history, one that Dior himself called the 'golden age'. Celebrating the end of war and the birth of a new era, it set a standard for dressmaking and high fashion that has rarely been surpassed. The V&A's exhibition explores this remarkable decade in fashion history.

The exhibition designers Land Design Studio's brief to DALD was for the lighting to create a theatrical event, as well as adhering to the strict conservation constraints.

The first gallery takes a practical aspect, focusing on the skills, processes and craftsmanship of haute couture, along with the creative inspiration behind some

Davies Roberts, managing director of Purple Audio and front-of-house engineer for Koopa comments: "Having been inspired by Tony Andrews' designs for many years and experiencing great success from the Funktion One Resolution 2 system I was using for small local events, a Funktion One Resolution 4 touring system was a natural choice.

France - One of the highlights of the summer on the French Riviera has been the reopening of St. Tropez' famous nightclub, Papagayo, which enjoyed a golden era in the 1970's when such people as Eddie Barclay and Brigitte Bardot soaked up the atmosphere. More recently the club has hosted the likes of P. Diddy, Bono and Bruce Willis. Located right on the harbour it offers magnificent views of the bay, and now it has set out to recapture its bygone splendour.

Owner Fabienne Malortigue has spent €2m in creating a completely new infrastructure - including a potent new sound system - and has brought in new director, Thierry Fontaine from The Loft in Lyon to add weight to the operation, which today offers an eclectic music mix to an 18-25-year-old crowd.

The venue contacted its long-term audio consultant, Nice-based integrators Perfec'son to upgrade the technical infrastructure. The

UK - Back to their original line-up as a trio, Ash have been touring their latest Twilight of the Innocents album in the UK and Europe, with Adlib Audio providing the production and sound engineer Lance Reynolds delivering the house mix on the Soundcraft Vi6 digital platform.

Reynolds, who has been piloting the band's house mix for the past four years, was delighted to find a Vi6 already in both the FOH and monitor positions when the band started their UK leg proper with a four-night stint at Koko in London, as the experienced sound engineer had already worked with the desk in his native Chicago - at Randy Flaws' Windy City Sound and Lighting.

"Randy got hold of the first couple of Vi6's for touring use in the States around a year ago, and when I'm back home I do work for that company. So I had the opportunity to get a feel for the Vi6 before the FX cards came alon

UK - Fineline's 5- axis router has been in action again, this time producing eight scenic Spitfires for Opera North's current highly rated production of Richard Keiser's The Fortunes of King Croesus.

Fineline was commissioned by Phil Martin of Bath-based Theatrical Props to build the basic elements of the planes, which were rough cut and shaped from epoxy model board by the CNC router.

The project was managed by Darren Wring. It was the first time that Martin has used the Bristol-based company, who were recommended to him by a colleague. "They were very friendly, helpful and attentive" he comments.

Each of the eight Spitfires needed to accommodate a small function. They also each needed to have a wingspan of 650mm and be constructed from a robust material that could be re-engineered to add future functions. They are finished in a high gloss gold, applied thr

UK - Recolight - the lamp recycling scheme - has now signed up 50 UK lamp producers and made a strong start in creating its recycling infrastructure, heard the scheme's first membership meeting at its Croydon HQ recently.

Recolight chief executive Eddie Taylor said the scheme had achieved a high awareness level for the Recolight brand and made good progress in setting up an effective network of collection points, currently around 800 nationally, which would continue to develop over the next year or so.

The meeting heard that the UK WEEE process was now "settling down"; there were still opportunities to improve processes and some issues relating to the Regulations that needed clarification, such as the format in which evidence that recycling has actually taken place must be reported, and these were all being progressed.

Taylor commented: "I think another import

Austria - Biamp Systems reports that two of Austria's host stadiums for the upcoming UEFA European Championships have recently installed audio systems featuring Biamp's AudiaFLEX components. Completed by Vienna's MOCOM Communications, the new upgrades elevate the venues to a level on par with some of the most advanced facilities in the game.

The design and integration for Innsbruck's Tivoli Neu Stadium was an upgrade to existing hardware, while the system implemented for Klagenfurt's Woerthersee Stadium was built from scratch. Both projects were managed by MOCOM's Harald Steindl.

"AudiaFLEX consistently sounds great and that's the primary requirement for me and my customers," Steindl remarked. "With such important events, it's also critical that the sound system be as reliable as possible or someone will lose business."

Both systems, though different desi
