UK - Adlib's busy specialist installation division has completed the design and installation of a new Coda Audio sound system at the BMX Centre, part of the country's National Cycling Centre in Manchester.

It follows on from the highly successful Coda system supplied by Adlib last year to the adjacent Velodrome track. Adlib was asked back by Manchester City Council, to deliver a permanent multi-purpose audio solution for the first ever permanent indoor BMX track in the UK.

The Adlib team was led by Roger Kirby and John Hughes, and overseen on site for them by Alex Burke.

Coda was specified for several reasons including continuity with the Velodrome system, and due to the positive response from the initial events. The system also offered the sonic range and dynamics demanded by the BMX Centre - which stages a whole range of events including those organised with local communit

Australia - Only a couple of months into the New Year and there have already been many high profile tours on the road with Philips Vari*Lites.

Ronan Keating toured with thirty-two VL3000 Spots and 27 VL3500 Wash supplied by Chameleon Touring Systems. Lighting designer Neil Trenell used a simple three truss rig designed to cater for a wide variety of venues from state theatres to arenas in Australia and New Zealand and to make load in and out easy due to several back to back shows.

"The VL3500 Washes are great - very, very bright and deliver a great beam effect that compliments the other lights in the rig," commented Trenell. "The VL3000 Spots are just a really nice light and you get a great gobo out of them, they're ideal for the theatre environment that we're trying to create."

Eight VL3000 Spots were situated on the floor, the back truss held a further

UK - Creative & Cultural Skills, Arts Council England, and Nesta have joined forces to commission new, independent research into the influence of the subsidised theatre on commercial theatre, with a view to gaining a greater understanding of the role of public investment in the arts.

The survey will track the careers of people in the industry, and the talent that has emerged from it, in order to better understand the impact that public investment in the theatre sector makes.

The aim is to collect the views of a range of theatre professionals currently or previously working in the sector, as well as those who have aspired to do so, on how their careers have developed. The wider the range of participants, the more valuable the research will be, and the more we will know about the success story of British Theatre.

Toby Alington's career in studio and live music recording goes back a long way, a very long way. From his formative years in the 1980's at the BBC and then Olympic Studios, described by the man himself as, "simply a heavenly place to be," Alington is now universally regarded as something of an iconic figure in the world of live music recording. In 2012 he has celebrated his 18th year on the BRIT Awards, his 10th on the MTV EMA's, and his 12th on the Classic BRIT Awards. Just to cap it all off he will be mixing the Diamond Jubilee event in June at Buckingham Palace and is currently working on the BBC's new Saturday night vehicle, The Voice UK, mixing all the music. No real surprise then, to hear that Alington was awarded the prestigious API Studio Engineer Award in 2011.

As a professional who takes a close interest in the way his industry grows and evolves, Al

Eire/UK - The Wanted's 2012 UK arena tour drew to a close in Dublin at the beginning of March and notched up another success for the boys. Audio requirements for the tour were supplied by Canegreen and SSE Audio, with Ryan McLean manning monitors and Andrew Thornton taking on both Front of House and production manager duties.

"The main reason I use Sennheiser equipment is for its sound," says Thornton, who has specified SKM 500-935 G3 for vocals, with a combination of e 904, e 901, e 906 and MKH 40 for backline. "We've tried these guys with all sorts of different microphones and the 935 sounds particularly good with their voices and gives me loads of volume before we have any feedback issues. Plus the boys like the feel, the way the microphone handles and the way it looks."

"Sennheiser has been involved with The Wanted right from the very start,"

UK - Metalcore band, Bring Me The Horizon (BMTH), has invested in a compact Allen & Heath iLive digital mixing system, comprising an iDR-48 MixRack and iLive-R72 Control Surface, to manage monitors on tour.

"Apart from sounding great, it was the flexibility of the iLive system which really drew me to it," comments tour manager and FOH engineer, Phil Gornell. "The band tours with full production kit but thanks to iLive we only have to carry a single rack for monitors. For one off fly shows, we are able to take our iDR rack as hand luggage and run the show using a laptop loaded with iLive Editor."

The band has already toured Europe, USA and Asia with the iLive system.

"It's a real comfort to have iLive on tour. It's a relief just knowing we're going to turn up at a different venue and get the same sound every day for our guys, which is the important th

South Korea - Dai Kyung Vascom, Renkus-Heinz distributor for South Korea, recently installed a pair of Iconyx digitally steerable array loudspeakers as part of an overall audio system upgrade for the Donam-dong Catholic church in Donam-dong, Seoul, South Korea.

Used for both the spoken word and music, the system was designed to improve acoustic intelligibility and musical clarity in this 400-seat local church.

Patrick Han of Day Kyung Vascom comments:"The church wanted to upgrade their system, and after assessing the space and discussing their requirements in detail, we have supplied two Renkus-Heinz IC8-R units with RHAON (Renkus-Heinz Audio Operations Network) and upgraded other aspects of their system to create a better system all round."

Also installed were an Allen & Heath ML3000-24 mixer, Apex dBQ-Zero and 104-10 Aural Exciter and a variety of Sennheiser micr

Mexico - At Bicentennial Park near Silao, Mexico, a sun-drenched, open-air Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict the XVI gathered a sizable crowd that the Associated Press estimated to reach 350,000 people. To ensure everybody could hear words and music clearly and to full effect, more than 375 Meyer Sound loudspeakers converged at the site - including 268 Milo line array loudspeakers, probably the most ever deployed for any single event.

The daunting challenge of audio system design was shouldered by Rodrigo López of Mexico City-based consulting firm Zero Phase. His assignment was to provide uniform coverage across a vast, irregularly-shaped area - over a kilometer wide and a half kilometer deep - comprising uneven hillsides, sloped parking lots and open fields.

To augment the main stage Milo arrays, López plotted a system of 40 delay towers laid out along 12 delay lines. Arrays

UK - Rycote, the UK-based manufacturer of microphone windshields and shockmount systems, has announced another of its popular open days. On 10 May 10, 2012, the Rycote factory in Stroud, Gloucestershire will be open to the public, who will be encouraged to tour the premises and see where and how the entire Rycote product range is manufactured and assembled.

As ever, Rycote staff and designers will be on hand throughout the day to answer technical questions and demonstrate products. This year, several new broadcast products will be on display, fresh from their debut at April's NAB show in Las Vegas.

"Our open days have proved to be a very popular way for us to keep in touch with our customers," explains sales & marketing director Stefano Pucello. "They're a great opportunity for our users to see and give us instant feedback on our products, and to exchange ideas

Australia - The 2012 Australia Day celebrations saw production and lighting designer Paul Collison create a glittering cityscape in the centre of Sydney's Darling Harbour, using a battery of Clay Paky Sharpys.

On 26 January thousands of spectators flocked to the Darling Harbour precinct to celebrate the founding of the Port Jackson settlement in 1788. The merriment culminated in a multifaceted choreography of lighting, lasers, fire and water, which climaxed in a magnificent fireworks display.

"The Sharpys are awesome," comments Collison. "They're small and extraordinarily bright, which made them absolutely ideal for this project for a number of reasons."

Collison's brief was to build a small cityscape on a barge in the centre of Darling harbour. "We designed a cylindrical video screen surrounded by a number of towers," he explains. "This ga

USA - The Riverside Casino & Golf Resort has positioned itself as a popular Midwest destination, offering Las Vegas-inspired gaming and slot machines in a resort setting featuring luxurious accommodations with panoramic views of its world-class golf course, an indoor/outdoor pool and other amenities.

The resort, located just south of Iowa City, is also home to a multipurpose Events Centre that offers a busy schedule of top name entertainment featuring artists like Big & Rich, Peter Frampton, The Robert Cray Band, and Tony Orlando, as well as hosting corporate, community and private functions.

Australia - When Opera Australia's artistic director Lyndon Terracini announced that they would be staging an open-air opera on Sydney Harbour there was much scepticism from opera buffs who furiously pursed their lips in anticipation of a production disaster.

It was clear from the outset that enormous technical and logistical challenges would have to be overcome to make the event a success - in particular the sound quality with opera purists lining up to criticize an operatic performance that utilised radio microphones and amplification.

Fortunately this open-air production of Verdi's La Traviata has opened to much acclaim by critics and whilst Brian Thomson's open, sloping, diamond-shaped stage with its scene-stealing 9m x 9m crystal chandelier has grabbed initial attention, the sound quality has been universally praised.

Sound designer Tony David Cray, along with th

Germany - At precisely 4pm on Thursday 22 March, in front of a comprehensive collection of the press, a celebratory photo of the MDG team was emailed from the MDG headquarters in Canada to Heinz and Sabine Siller of cast C. Adolph & RST Distribution as they stood on the MDG stand at Prolight+Sound.

The photo showed the staff holding an Inukshuk, a Canadian monument made of unworked stones which represents the energy of stone in a human image, traditionally used by the Inuit for communication and survival. The message read: "MDG is proud and honoured to offer this Inukshuk to cast C. Adolph & RST Distribution for our 20 years of partnership and many more to come!"

That same Inukshuk, having been transported in hand-luggage from Montreal to Frankfurt, was then presented on the stand to Heinz Siller by MDG's Martin Michaud. Michaud explained that, "In modern times,

Germany - For nearly 20 years, Circus Flic Flac has been synonymous with artistic, highly unusual entertainment and absolutely thrilling live shows. However, last year, Flic Flac ceased touring in order to concentrate on single shows and special events - such as the Christmas circus in Nuremberg.

Between the beginning of last December and end of January, the striking circus Big Top, coloured in yellow and black was raised for more than 60 shows, with over 1,400 people attending each day.

Jens Berthold, CEO of Germany's J&S Music, and Christian Griebel, technical director for the show, set the specifications. "We needed highly reliable fixtures. Due to arctic temperatures, far below zero at night and around 25°C during the shows, condensation was only one of the challenges we needed to face. Furthermore, dust, heavy use of fog machines and constantly changing temperatu

USA - High End Systems, DL.3 Digital Lights and intellaspot automated luminaires helped define the political landscape for The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2012. The week-long event in February drew thousands to the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C. for presentations, press conferences, panel sessions and parties.

LD Matt Mills designed the lighting and the set, and programmed and operated the show for CMI Communications. He elected to use three DL.3 Digital Lights and 18 intellaspot LED automated luminaires, provided by Mainlight Industries.

Mills used the DL.3s in Collage mode, using two to create one seamless panoramic image above the podium for the press shots. "The press would get right at the downstage edge of the stage and take an upshot of each of the candidates at the podium. I thought it would be a nice touch if there was something in

UK - JHS and HK Audio will unveil the Lucas Nano 300 and the new Linear 5 Line at PLASA Focus: Leeds.

"The Lucas Nano 300's ultra-compact subwoofer and two fist-sized satellites are sure to astonish and amaze with an audio experience to rival that of far larger systems," says the company. The subwoofer houses the electronics and a versatile three-channel mixing console so that the Lucas Nano 300 is ready for immediate use without any additional equipment.

"The two satellites lock into a transport bay on the subwoofer with a simple twist of the wrist. And thanks to its very comfortable grips, the entire system is easily carried in just one hand."

A highly portable sound reinforcement solution for a multitude of different applications restricted only by the limits of users' imaginations, the classic setup with stereo satellites is easily reconfigured as a m

UK - HSL supplied lighting equipment and LED screens to the first production tour for the UK's newest boyband sensation, One Direction, who have just completed a totally sold out six-week UK arena/theatre tour.

HSL was working for Production North, who asked Dave Lee to create a lighting design for the tour, working alongside show producer Louise Doyle. Together, they helped deliver a lively and entertaining performance to One Direction's young and enthusiastic.

HSL's project manager Mike Oates comments, "We were very happy to be working with production director Steve Levitt, production manager Mike Clegg and the team from Production North again, who always produce a great live show with real entertainment value. We were also able to offer an integrated and efficient technical package encompassing both lighting and LED screens."

In 2011, HSL made its first major in

UK - Promising to standardise on RCF components after purchasing a major Theatre & Touring (TT+) system nine months ago, Yes Events remained true to their word when they added a second tranche of the Italian manufacturers' products to their hire fleet from this increasingly-popular range.

This time they have bought an eight-enclosure TTL33-A compact, three-way active line array system and two further TTS28-A subs to add to the four they already have. In addition, they have invested in six TT25-SMA touring 15in stage monitors and RCF's proprietary RDNet system software, to integrate with the TTL33-A.

According to Yes Events director, Tom Chennells, the underlying reason for the latest round of spending was to service the assault on 30 shopping malls simultaneously by Rock Choir's infamous Flash Mob on Sunday 25 March.

UK - The Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT) and the Stage Management Association (SMA) will hold this spring's Production Managers Forum (PMF) meeting - open to all - at the forthcoming PLASA Focus, Leeds, on Tuesday 17 April at 11.30am, in the Royal Armouries Bury Theatre.

Founded in 2000, the PMF was created as a joint venture between the two associations, in recognition that there was no organisation dedicated to the specific needs of the production manager.

Since then, the PMF has held three to four meetings a year, on various subjects ranging from International carnets to greener productions.

This latest meeting is presented as part of the PLASA Focus seminar programme. It will concentrate on the ABTT's Technical Access Passport Scheme (TAP) - launched at last year's ABTT Theatre Show - and the range of possible benefits this unifying card scheme offers t

Jim Marshall Remembered - Guitar amp innovator Jim Marshall, dubbed 'the Father of Loud' for creating kit used by some of rock's biggest names, has died aged 88 and the industry has been paying tribute. A statement posted on the company's website called him a "legendary man", adding, "In addition to the creation of the amps, chosen by countless guitar heroes and game changing bands, Jim was also an incredibly humble and generous man who, over the past several decades, has quietly donated many millions of pounds to worthy causes."

Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash tweeted, "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R & R will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on FOREVER!"

Motley Crue bass player Nikki Sixx also paid tribute on Twitter, saying Marshall was "responsible for some of the greatest audio moments in

USA - Nokia brought Times Square to a standstill last week as 30,000 people watched one of the biggest electronic take-overs of the iconic New York landmark for the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900.

Using the latest CGI technology the team behind the massive Hollywood blockbuster, i-Robot, created one of the world's largest LED displays. Nokia took control of nine of the square's famous electronic screens to ensure the crowd were immersed in light and music from every direction. The light show was introduced by international superstar Nicki Minaj, who sang a medley of tracks from her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

A team of visual artist worked for more than 5,000 hours, day and night for more than three weeks, to create the hundreds of effects that were used on the large screens. All of the electronic screens were controlled from a mobile server that was f
