Full Sail University and the University of Derby hosted successful trainings at their facilities
USA - Education is central to Meyer Sound’s mission, and the global programme is flourishing following a refresh this year offering new strategic partnerships, a robust schedule of in-person training classes, conference participation, and significant online content.
“By reimagining the education programme here at Meyer Sound, we’re really investing in the future of the industry and the future of sound,” says training & education manager Robyn Bykofsky.
The 2023 trainings and events schedule is designed with the goal of building a strong foundation of audio principles with practical applications such as the MAPP 3D system design and prediction tool and Spacemap Go, Meyer Sound’s spatial sound design and mixing tool. The company’s expert educators have provided mentorship for students and professionals alike.
UC Irvine Sound Design MFA student Costa Daros is currently working with Spacemap Go on her thesis show, Rent and notes that the support she has received from Meyer Sound every step of the way has been “amazing”. “The one-on-one help I’ve received in system design with MAPP 3D and Spacemap creation has been instrumental to my understanding of the tools and how to use them to achieve my design goals.”
Although Meyer Sound offered education during the pandemic with webinars and online resources, a return to in-person instruction has been instrumental in the reimagining of the education programme. In-person visits from students to the Berkeley factory, presence at conferences, and training opportunities across the world have increased the opportunities for hands-on learning.
“It’s great to have these [online] resources at hand for whenever the students need them, but it’s invaluable to have in-person trainings with our clients and our students so we get a real feel of what is needed,” says technical services specialist, Middle-East, Sana Romanos. “The whole point of us teaching is to target end needs of our clients and our students.”
Meyer Sound’s educators have taught all over the world this year, delivering in-person training in numerous countries across Latin America, both Eastern and Western Europe, and both coasts of the United States. Topics have included system design and optimisation, low-frequency control, and CueSchool.
“Sound System Design and Optimisation was a great review of fundamentals paired with case studies that not only were helpful in conceptualising large-scale system design but also allowed the systematic tuning process to be applied in a variety of contexts ranging from stadiums and theaters to immersive designs,” says Volbeat system engineer Samantha ‘Sam’ Boone, who attended the training at Full Sail University.
The opportunities provided by the program so far this year are just the beginning, and there is much more on the way. Meyer Sound will offer portable system deployment training starting in May, where participants will learn how to deploy live sound systems. The first seminar in this category will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in partnership with Venuetech, and the second will be in Vienna, Austria, in partnership with ATEC Pro, with the Panther large-format linear line array loudspeaker with a Milan AVB input.
There will also be a training in Toronto in partnership with GerrAudio. This fall, director of system optimisation Bob McCarthy will be teaching a seminar in Paris, France for the first time ever. The company will also hold a special training session in Copenhagen this April for technical crew members of the Roskilde Festival, where Meyer Sound has been the official sound partner since 2018.
Meyer Sound has also announced that they are enhancing their ongoing relationship with Women’s Audio Mission (WAM) in honour of the organisation’s 20th anniversary. WAM interns will visit the factory in April to receive a tour of the facilities.
