Denmark - David Guetta lighting designer Mikeyray Harkins designed a high impact look for the French DJ's 8 October show at Tap 1 in Copenhagen using Martin Professional's new MAC 101 LED wash light.

"What an amazing little fixture. I absolutely loved the 101's. They stood up against my rig of MAC 700 wash and spots - really fast, good colour and a fantastic beam with great throw distance. I am really impressed," he stated.

Mikeyray says that he and Pilot Vision (video screen software designers and co-designers on the show) had been looking for a small, fast and bright LED fixture to mount behind the onstage video screen, something with a tight beam that emulates a big pixel to match the look of the show. The MAC 101 fits the bill. "It added that extra element to our visual content."

USA - Along with a new Panasonic Live 4HD scoreboard, Los Angeles' Staples Centre has added a significant inventory of 44 Vari*Lite automated luminaires supplied by Epic Production Technologies.

Looking to add to the 12 VL3000 Spot luminaires Epic supplied a few years ago, Staples Centre wanted to replace the 48 Par Can fixtures that were previously mounted under the scoreboard and they chose 16 of the LED-based VLX Wash luminaires. To round out the new rig, 16 VL3500 Wash fixtures and 12 additional VL3000 Spot fixtures were also added.

UK - Producers Julian Marks and Clive McElarney of Event 360 in London called upon lighting designer Vince Foster and Bandit Lites UK CE Lester Cobrin to illuminate the team introductions for the fourth annual NFL game in Wembley Stadium, between the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos.

In order to produce a visually exciting show, but minimize power consumption, heat and impact on the environment, Foster chose to use a substantial number of Chroma Q Chroma Strip Mark II's as well as GLP Impressions for the bulk of the dramatic effects effect.

UK - Martin Professional UK will be holding a Pixel Mapping Workshop on Thursday and Friday, 11-12 November at Riverside Studios in London. Using the latest Martin LED lighting fixtures, video screens and processor, lighting consoles and media server products, Martin UK will demonstrate lighting and video convergence in a number of practical show-type applications.

The workshop is designed to allow participants to get hands-on with the kit in order to gain insight into how to design and operate a pixel mapped rig. Designed to be an inspirational look at convergence, technical issues will also be covered.

China - Clay Paky has joined its Chinese partner, ACE, in organising a successful open day for over 100 lighting and sound professionals at the Shanghai World Expo.

ACE, which has provided equipment and expertise for all the events and ceremonies surrounding the World Expo, invited prominent lighting designers from China's TV and events markets. Attendees at the ACE open house were treated to backstage access at the Expo and presented with Clay Paky's latest line of luminaires.

The aim was to familiarise the designers with Clay Paky's Alpha 700 and 1500 series and emphasise the high level of support offered to the Chinese market place.

Russia - Over 100 Robe moving lights and 500 Anolis LED fixtures were supplied by Moscow based Light Sound Contractor(LSC) for the Colourful Neighbourhoods for a Better City area of the Russian Federation Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo.

The lighting design and sophisticated lighting, sound and video control for this award winning pavilion were engineered by LSC's Denis Lyapunov and Alexey Pereverzev based on a concept from leading Russian set and scenic designer Boris Krasnov, who created the general design of the Russian Federation Pavilion.

Over the course of the Expo which ran May to October, the Russian Pavilion was one of the most popular out of over 200 exhibits, seeing a total of 7.5m visitors pass through the double storey environment.

USA - Country superstars Martina McBride and Trace Adkins worked together and apart throughout 2010 with Bandit Lites for their illumination needs.

Martina and husband John McBride, along with tour manager Mark Hively, production manager Meesha Kosciolek and stage manager Pat O'Neil worked with Bandit VP Michael Golden to continue what has become a long stream of over the top visual treats. They again brought in designer Abbey Rosen Holmes - renown for her work with artists such as Roger Waters, Peter Gabriel, Cher, Janet Jackson, Disney, The Cure and many others.

Holmes and Abbey and Martina collaborated with Tom McPhillips and the staff at Atomic Design to deliver a set including ramps, risers, revolving platforms, elevators and Martina's 'moon' which flew her to front of house to sing a few tunes.

UK - Up-and-coming Leicester-based lighting designer/programmer Paul Nicholls graduated from Rose Bruford College last year where he studied the Lighting Design degree course, and then launched his freelance career. His nascent business - PDN Design has invested in a grandMA2 ultra-light console.

Nicholls had started working with grandMA consoles whilst studying, primarily via extra-curricular freelancing work for UK rental companies including Hawthorn Theatrical, which gives him the chance to use the grandMA 'series 1' full-size, light and ultra-light.

UK - Children at 10 new schools in South Lanarkshire are now able to put on theatre and music productions following work by Black Light's installation team.

"This project has been going on over the past 18 months and we have another three or four schools to do over the next year," says Black Light's installations project manager, Paul McGreal. "We secured the contract because we are cost-competitive and also because we are a trusted supplier to schools up and down the country."

The project involved Black Light working with a number of building service contractors, including NG Bailey and Spie Matthew Hall, as well as with South Lanarkshire Council. Black Light was asked to design and install theatre systems in assembly halls and games halls and to deliver a training package for teachers and janitorial staff.

USA - After more than 40 years together ZZ Top continue to tour worldwide. In 2010 they continued the long tradition of Bandit Lites, also 40 plus years old, as their illumination supplier. Tour manager Pablo Gamboa, production manager Rob Kern and long time lighting designer Chris Stuba all worked with Bandit VP Michael Golden through the year to "deliver Texas to the world".

Stuba's design involves VL 3000 Spots, VL 3500 Washes, VL 2500 Spots, MAC 2000 Washes, Atomic Strobes, Color Blasts and Grand MA consoles. Bandit Jeff Archibeque travels the world keeping continuity to Stuba's crew, wherever the show may be.

Italy / Denmark - At a press conference in central London last night, RCF Group's Arturo Vicari introduced Peter Johansen as the new head of R&D at Italian lighting manufacturer SGM. The founder of Martin Professional, Johansen returns to the lighting industry after an absence of more than a decade. Based in Aarhus, Denmark, and joined by eight of his former R&D team, Johansen will oversee parallel development of a series of conventional discharge moving lights and LED fixtures.

The Dane says he had no intention of re-entering the lighting industry once his 10-year non-compete contract had expired; however, after meeting Arturo Vicari, managing director of the RCF Group (of which SGM is a part), the deal was struck. "I could see they would be great guys to work with - but I only agreed to join SGM on the understanding that I could get my old team back," said Johansen.

Singapore - Robe and Anolis lighting fixtures have been specified and installed into three separate busy clubs in Orchard Tower, 400 Orchard Road, a well known landmark on the Singaporean night scene for those who enjoy serious pole dancing and drinking culture.

The three clubs - Queens, Crazy Horse and Top 5 Disco - all owned by Helen Yap, have all recently had their lighting upgraded to keep pace with the latest technology. This has been specified by technical manager Dave Rock who has been involved with various venues in Orchard Towers for the last 25 years.

In Crazy Horse, Yap specifically wanted the dancefloor illuminated, so Rock looked at the options and received some demos, including from Louis Teo of Lighting & Sound Distribution, the local Robe and Anolis distributor. UK - Bandit UK CE Lester Cobrin and the team in Bedford have had their hands full with some major events of late. The 2010 Horse of the Year Show, The 2010 Alternative Hair Show and UFC 120 were all on the schedule.

The Horse of the Year Show is Europe's largest annual celebration of equine events. It has been an annual event since 1949 and in 2002 it moved to the NEC Arena, Birmingham.

The vehicle was illuminated with two of LOBO's multi-awarded 'sparks' laser systems - "probably the world's brightest multi-colour laser systems today," says the company.

Germany - The Nürburgring motor-racing circuit recently added RingWerk, a new indoor visitor centre, to their range of facilities - and turned to White Light to supply and install the complete lighting system for the building's displays and interactive exhibits throughout the 15,000sq.m space.

The lighting for the project was designed by noted concert and event lighting designer Durham Marenghi, whose other work ranges from the opening of London St Pancras Station to the London 2012 Handover at the Beijing Olympics, through his architectural design firm Lumitect. White Light was selected to realise his design by Nürburgring and their project manager Philip Hartley of PHA for its ability to bring an experienced theatrical eye to the project while attending to the practicalities of installing and programming the lighting, dimming, infrastructure and control systems.

Denmark - Following the successful launch of the M1 lighting controller, Martin Professional introduces two new PC-based controllers to its lineup.

The M-PC Pro, which replaces the original Maxxyz PC, includes all the features of the Maxxyz PC plus all new features from the new M1 console. In addition, M-PC Pro has been upgraded from 32 to 64 DMX universes over standard Artnet or by using the Martin USB DUO DMX, making it some of the most powerful PC-based lighting software ever made.

For budget-oriented applications, the M-PC Basic offers the same feature set as the M-PC Pro but can generate a maximum of eight DMX universes.

Both M-PC Pro and M-PC Basic come with the MSD5 (Martin ShowDesigner) MC Edition 3D Visualizer and one Martin USB DUO DMX.

South Africa - Anolis ArcSource 3 RGB LED fixtures and an Anolis ArcControl 1024 have been supplied by Anolis' South African Distributors DWR to Montecasino in Fourways, Johannesburg. The LED fixtures are set up in the 'pit' area where the gaming tables are situated.

Declan Randall from Congo Blue worked closely with Montecasino's David Butcher to come up with an appropriate lighting design. Montecasino is a popular Tuscan/Italian styled entertainment and casino destination in Johannesburg. Pillars with wooden beams and greenery form part of the décor in the pit area, creating a vineyard feel, and Randall opted to illuminate the pillars with an LED solution.

The brief was to create a lighting scheme to enhance the area around Pit 1 and attract people's attention as they walked past, without simultaneously distracting the players.
