USA - Manhattan's Pier 94 has seen a lot of history pass through its 135,000sq.ft of space since it opened in 1935 as an ocean liner terminal, but it's doubtful that this venerable structure, which was later remodelled as an exhibition centre, has ever witnessed anything quite like the Pier of Fear. Now in its third year, the two-day festival served up a spectacular Halloween treat for New York's EDM fans with a stellar line-up of DJs, a colourful array of costumes that were definitely not picked up at Wal-Mart, and a brain tingling lightshow anchored by Next NXT-1 and Legend 330SR Spot fixtures from Chauvet Professional.

KM Productions of Hicksville, NY set up the lighting rig for the Halloween festival, which is put on by RPM Presents (New York). "This is a major event on the EDM calendar," said Kevin Mignone, president of KM Productions. "It's very DJ centric w

UK - For the past several months the Tower of London, part of the Historic Royal Palaces, and its ambitious sculptural commission: Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red have been a central symbol of the UK's WWI Centenary observations.

The display, which grew in size over time, marked each commonwealth casualty of WWI - 888,246 in total - with a hand-made red ceramic poppy "planted" by volunteers around the venue's exterior. Entertainment and event production supplier White Light has been closely involved in the event, providing lighting, sound, and video support services for the opening ceremony on 5 August and closing ceremony on 11 November (Remembrance Day) as well as providing lighting for the entire poppy display throughout its three-month installation.

White Light managing director Bryan Raven commented on event's significance saying, "The Tower Poppies have

Germany - Belgian based WIcreations designed a custom tracking system that moved six giant columns of LED screen over 70m for the massive event in front of Berlin's historic Brandenburg Gate to celebrate 25 Years since the 'Fall of the Wall'.

The Brandenburg Gate show, televised live by a number of international news and TV networks, was the highest profile of a number of celebratory elements staged in Berlin over the weekend of 9 November, all commemorating the landmark quarter-century since that tumultuous moment in 1989 when the Berlin Wall metaphorically 'fell'.

The screens glided seamlessly back and for the along the tracks, opening and closing the vista of the Brandenburg Gate for the tens of thousands who gathered to enjoy the party. Performances on the two stages in front of the Gate included German stars Fantastischen Vier, Udo Lindenberger, DJ Paul Kalkbrenner and ma

GLP will continue to celebrate its 20th anniversary at this year's LDI Show in Las Vegas (17-23 November). As at Prolight+Sound and PLASA earlier in the year the company will present a museum, displaying milestone products released during the past two decades. But the highlight of its product display will be the expanding series of impression X4 products - including the brand new impression X4 Bar, making its North American debut at the show.

The impression X4 Bar 10 and impression X4 Bar 20 are high performance battens that incorporate 15W RGBW LEDs packed tightly to give a full line of light. The X4 Bar 20 measures 40"/1m in length and uses 20 LEDs, and the shorter 20"/50cm X4 Bar 10 uses 10 LEDs. The battens produce a smooth, homogenised output across the batten through a broad pallet of pastel and saturated colours, complemented by dimming which ensures that there is no c

UK - Behind the Scenes UK, the newly launched charity that aims to provide financial support to entertainment technology professionals when they are ill or injured, is calling on companies and individuals to send their annual Christmas cards via Card Aid this year.

Card Aid has been helping charities increase their funds from the sale of their Christmas cards for over 30 years and John Simpson, Chair of Behind the Scenes UK, believes proceeds from the sale of Christmas Cards via the Card Aid Website will really make a difference to Behind the Scenes which only launched in the UK in October.

"Sending Christmas cards is a long held tradition and Card Aid allows us to keep the spirit of Christmas alive - as cards can be purchased online, either in the form of a pack of cards or as e-cards which can be sent on a pay per click basis. Whilst we are happy to accept donations in

The Director of choreography of the Bielefeld Dance Theatre Gregor Zöllig and his team were in charge of the project, while the Philharmonic was conducted by Alexander Kalajdzic. Tilo Steffens designed the stage layout, which was inspired by the deep red colour of the Jubilee logo.

UK - London-based LD Rowan Norris of Darkside Lights has been working with Feed Me, one of the intriguing aliases of DJ Jonathan Gooch - the artist whose individual sound flips between dubstep, electro-house and a bit of d'n'b have earned both critical acclaim and a serious fanbase.

Rowan joined the Feed Me team as an operator back in 2012. Initially brought onboard to operate the house rigs over the top of the synchronised shows, Rowan was delighted to be asked to submit a design for With Teeth Version 3 upgrade, for which he specified Robe Pointes and CycFX 8s.

"The completely bespoke new set was inspired by Chris Cunningham's All is Full of Love for Bjork, so we needed fixtures that could be fed with video animation... and could also move," explains Rowan.

The show's overall visual design was originated by the artist and crafted for the stage by Ne

Germany - BAP, one of the most distinctive German bands, was founded in 1976. The group formed around songwriter Wolfgang Niedecken and, in their early days, they met in various venues to enjoy a beer together. A 35 year long career has grown from those beginnings.

Over the decades, BAP has released 16 studio albums and the musicians have performed in various different countries throughout the world. At the moment, the band is on the road with their acoustic BAP zieht den Stecker (BAP pulls the plug) tour. For one of the dates, they performed in an open-air concert at Salzkotten, near Paderborn.

For the open-air concert, the lighting designer Peter Seifert (Cue Design), who is accompanying the musicians on tour, used four B-EYE K20s, four B-EYE K10s, eleven Alpha Spot HPE 700s and 18 Alpha Wash 700s, all made by Clay Paky, as well as six 4-Lite blinders by Major, and a

Europe - UK indie-electronic band Goldfrapp have recently completed an extensive European festival tour that saw an array of Clay Paky Sharpy Wash 330s at the core of the show design.

Show and lighting designer Rob Sinclair worked alongside lighting director Louisa Smurthwaite to specify 21 Sharpy Wash 330 fixtures for this festival leg of the Tales of Us tour.

"Using the Sharpy Wash 330s, we created strong looks through the lead singer Alison and the rest of the band onstage," says Smurthwaite. "From the tight wash beam, through to the wider look the frost gave, we were able to create some excellent moments with the fixture."

Supplied by NEG Earth, 15 of the Clay Paky fixtures were rigged behind the band and six were used as side lighting. The upstage units were rigged at a height of 4ft, so that Sinclair and Smurthwaite could create a wall of bac

UK - The Jands Vista lighting and media control console proved its flexibility and power when it provided control for this year's Ultimate Fireworks Spectacular event at popular UK theme park, Alton Towers Resort.

Alton Towers Resort specified the Jands Vista system to provide lighting and media control for the event, for the fourth consecutive year.

Simon Horsley, Alton Towers Resort's technical manager, based his lighting design for the show around this year's storyline, which took guests through a battle between dreams and nightmares, featuring the thrills and fear of the Resort's most famous rides.

Simon's dramatic lighting for the event utilised a Jands Vista console to control the rig, which featured over 150 fixtures from leading brands including Martin, Clay Paky and Robe.

In addition to the lighting, the show featured an impressive video element projected o

USA - Eric Wade, of FOHShow LLC, is the first US lighting designer to put Ayrton's Radicalnew MagicPanel-R out on a major tour - that of American R&B/hip-hop artist Usher as he embarks on a 50-date tour across America and Europe to promote his eighth album, UR.

Wade's rig includes 64 active MagicPanel-R units in the air, plus 25 Ayrton MagicBlade -R fixtures under a transparent forestage. Both fixtures are members of Ayrton's new Radfical line of LED beam projectors, which was introduced at ProLight + Sound in Frankfurt earlier this year.

The common component of the entire Radical line is an individually-controllable, 15W RGBW multi-chip LED source coupled with a 67mm diameter 4.5° collimator optic. MagicPanel-R puts these emitters into a 5 x 5 matrix, while MagicBlade-R mounts them in a unique, seven-in-a-row, in-line configuration. Both fixtures feature a fast mov

Spain - The flamenco dance company De sangre y raza has drawn praise from visitors and lighting professionals alike with its self titled production at the Infanta Isabel Theatre in Madrid - thanks in no small part to the use of ETC Source Four LED Series 2 in the wings, which were used to highlight the dancers.

Lit by Carlos Fajardo, the production was a joint effort by dancers, choreographers and designers, with the aim to create accessible dance - as they say, "art for everybody" - for the full colour production of the famously emotional and passionate dance style.

Fajardo comments, "We were really impressed with how well the Source Four LED fixtures were able to highlight the dancers' colourful costumes while still maintaining natural skin tones. By being able to instantly call on a wide range of different colours, the fixtures made the job of lighting the da

UK - Two of Redbridge Drama Centre's much-loved venues, the Lovegrove Theatre and Telford Studios, have recently received a delivery of over 50 new Philips Selecon PL range luminaires as a means to reduce the Drama Centre's energy consumption.

The shift to LED came as a result of a £192,000 grant given to RDC by Arts Council England to improve the building and to implement energy saving measures, in part by replacing the traditional stage lighting with LED luminaires. The Drama Centre's technical drama officers Chris Bocking and Ben Ward along with Mick Cocker of Lighting Logic, who supplied and installed the units, spent months researching the best possible luminaires for the re-fit and selected the Selecon PLfresnel1 and Selecon PLcyc1 for their project.

The Philips Selecon PLfresnel1 is a general purpose luminaire for theatre, small studio and display lighting applica

USA - City Theatrical will be launching a number of new products at LDI 2014 in Las Vegas this month.

A new feature to the multi award-winning SHoW DMX Neo product line is the addition of Maximum Bandwidth Technology which allows SHoW DMX to change from Frequency Hopping to Wide Band Digital Modulation, which allows it to narrow its output to smaller areas of the 2.4GHz spectrum, such as Wi-Fi channels 13-14, where in the United States, no Wi-Fi broadcast takes place.

This allows SHoW DMX to avoid all Wi-Fi interference in an otherwise saturated spectrum. This is accomplished simply by selecting a SHoW ID on the user interface or via RDM. This feature will be available as an upgrade for all present SHoW DMX Neo users and will be a standard feature of all new SHoW DMX Neo sales.
