USA - Completed in the fall of 2013, SECU Arena at Towson University has a lot to recommend it as a concert venue. It's spacious (measuring 117,000 sq. ft.), has good acoustics and ample power supply. However, there is one thing about this state-of-the-art facility that presented a special challenge for lighting designer Brett Angstadt: SECU does not allow haze.

Angstadt of Round Peg Productions would have liked to have used haze to create more dramatic beam looks at Mistletoe Meltdown, a hugely popular December festival, which in 2015 featured Robin Thicke, OMI, Rachel Platten and The Vamps. Nevertheless, Angstadt overcame this obstacle with the help of 13 pixel mapped Next NXT-1 moving RGBW LED panels from Chauvet Professional, provided by Showtime Sound of Frederick, MD.

"Since there was no haze permitted in the venue, I had to come up with another way to create the

USA - 2016 has only barely begun and Bandit Lites has already gathered at the Annual General Meeting to celebrate the previous award-winning year, while those in attendance discussed future company goals.

In January 2015 Bandit won the Pollstar Lighting Company of the Year Award, followed by the equally prestigious Parnelli Award for Lighting Company of the Year in November.

Bandit honoured many people this year starting with long time Bandit Brent Barrett, who has had a remarkable tenure with Bandit since the founding of the company. Brent, a steady fixture in Bandit's illustrious history, initially joined in 1977 while in college with founder Michael T. Strickland at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

A few years later, Barrett would find himself joining forces with the Southern rock powerhouse band Alabama, a Bandit client, as their production manager, where he

USA - Nashville-based Elite Multimedia has taken inventory of 110 Elation ACL 360i LED luminaires. Through a strategic purchase to increase the breadth of their LED product offerings, the new luminaires are now available for rent through the Nashville headquarters of the award-winning, live event production partner.

"We chose the Elation ACL 360i luminaires to fill a very specific need for a fixture that can be a part of a matrix configuration and produce dynamic motion effects while in that configuration," explained Jason Jenkins, Elite Multimedia director of operations. "The speed of the Elation ACL 360i is phenomenal, and it has a clean, tight beam that others can't match. We also really like the cooler colour temperature of its LED source, and it's a very affordable fixture that does not sacrifice quality."

USA - Bandit Lites reports that the Spheriscan, Clay Paky's new "revolutionary scanner with a modern twist" is making its world touring debut on the road with Bandit Lites in January of 2016. The first large shipment of Spheriscan fixtures in the world were shipped to Bandit Nashville for a huge upcoming tour.

Reviving the idea of a moving mirror fixture, the Spheriscan fills a fixture gap that has long been absent from a designer's wheelhouse, giving stunning swirling effects as the mirror spins endlessly with an option of four revolutions per second.

"The speed and feature set make the Spheriscan a uniquely diverse fixture while maintaining the needs of everyday use," said Bandit's director of technical services Jake Tickle. "It is refreshing to see Clay Paky produce a product that so many have wanted while adding their own touch to it, and it is a

UK - When Henley Business School celebrated its 70th birthday, event organiser Nikki Cooper wanted some touches of magic for the occasion, so after deciding with colleagues that special lighting could be the answer, they contacted alumnae Phil Ion, MD of UK-based LED manufacturer CORE Lighting and asked if he could help.

"I was absolutely delighted to be involved again with Henley and especially with its 70th anniversary," said Phil, who gained an MBA at the business school.

They were looking for a big wow factor, so Phil demonstrated the CORE ColourPoint up-lighter and immediately suggested lighting the front façade of the main grade II listed Greenlands building.

Finland - Wireless lighting control manufacturer, LumenRadio, once again proved that arctic conditions is not a problem for its sturdy products. At the annual Lux Helsinki festival, a number of CRMX Slim units were used to realise the vision of Light Artist Kari Kola with his piece Color Park.

In Color Park the audience can switch the colour of the illuminated details of the artwork through several interactive movement and distance sensors. Kola urges the viewers to play with his art: "You can step under a coloured light and your presence will tone the vault next to the Old Church. Ask your friend to come along and you can mix the colours together", explains Kola on his piece. "Or try painting with your hand! Colours react to the sound frequency of the theremin, an instrument invented nearly a hundred years ago. The changes in the sound frequency changes the freq

UK - A major challenge for anyone offering further education in technical theatre or entertainment arts is being able to offer students access to the very latest, state-of-the-art equipment. In today's rapidly evolving industry, new technology can become almost obsolete within a few years. Administrators at Nottingham New College decided to take a pro-active approach to overcome this.

Technical course leader, Lucy Greaves, explains, "Our FdA Theatre Arts (Acting) students were preparing a performance of Terrorism by the Presnyakov Brothers and the FdA Theatre Arts (Technical) students were providing the technical support required for the play. The director of the performance, Phil Green who is the course leader of the FdA Theatre Arts (Acting) course requested a lighting effect that could focus on an actor's face. The technical tutor, Andy Atkin suggested that ideal

USA - Barbara Walters described Coeur D 'Alene, ID as "a little slice of heaven." The National Geographic has declared its namesake lake to be one of the five most beautiful in the world. Coeur D 'Alene's paradisiacal pleasures are evident throughout the year, but at no time does the city glitter quite so brightly as it does during the Christmas season when it hosts its holiday lightshow.

Official estimates place the number of lights involved in the show at 1.5m. This year another 14 fixtures were added to the holiday mix, in the form of COLORado 4 IP LED linear washes from Chauvet Professional, provided by AMP'D Entertainment.

Although 14 fixtures might not seem like much compared to 1.5 million points of light, the COLORados had an outsized impact on Coeur D 'Alene's fes

Italy - The Casinò Municipale di San Pellegrino Terme has a charming, exclusive Art Nouveau atmosphere. With its majestic beauty and the ornamental richness both of its interior and exterior, it is a splendid setting - perhaps even the perfect place to experiment with lighting to enhance its elegance and bring back to mind the splendour of the Belle Époque.

Longhi Banqueting had the idea of illuminating the casino. The catering company contacted the lighting designer Giuseppe Cividini and asked him to design show lighting for the building.

"We got a lot of ideas from the technical inspection and came up with solutions for carrying out the work inside the building and on the façade. It was necessary to dim down the areas that were too brightly lit and illuminate the poorly lit parts to make them stand out at their best," Giuseppe Cividini relates.

I designed the tour featuring a lot of multi-cell fixtures, LED tape and effects such as smoke machines and strobes, so I used the Pixel Mapper and Key Frame Shapes features, which offer a very quick way to create effects and it gives you a lot more control on how precise they are."

The team opened each show with a giant Union Jack backdrop to mark the homecoming, and designed two large set pieces either side of stage which were based on Mallory Knox's 'MK' lo

USA - Since its opening in 2014, Miami's E11EVEN has featured a procession of superstars from Drake to A-Trak on its stage - and that has been during normal times! During Winter Music Conference last year, the chic two-story downtown Miami club was a magnet for hip hop, house music and EDM heavies. There were so many artists slated to perform at the club that its management decided to expand stage space by booking some acts to perform up on the open, airy cabana style Rooftop Terrace over the second floor.

This decision ultimately led to a new look being created on the terrace by world-renowned club designer Michael Meacham of iDesign, using a collection of LED moving fixtures from Chauvet. "The club knew it had to create a different atmosphere up on the roof to support the acts it was bring there during the Winter Music Conference This is when they brought me in," sa
