UK - Summit Steel is once again supplying rigging and associated support services for the Cirque du Soleil production of Alegria at the Royal Albert Hall.

It's the sixth Cirque production that Summit has put into the venue, and Alegria was also the first Cirque production which Summit were involved with in the central London venue, back in 1998.

The 2006 project involved the preparation of 104 points of rigging, for which Summit has supplied 40 of their own Lodestar motors in addition to using the house hoists.

Summit also designed a completely new rigging infrastructure, involving the installation of nearly 400m of Summit's James Thomas Supertruss. This was needed for Cirque to produce their daring, highly acrobatic production - normally staged in their own purpose-built big top - into a completely new and different venue. The Albert Hall is a challenging venu

UK - Komedia is Brighton's leading live entertainment venue, weekly playing host to a huge variety of musicians, comedians and other performers. Because of the theatre's demanding and varied schedule, it is crucial that the interior of the venue be versatile and robust. The entire set up regularly needs a complete change around in a matter of hours.

In 2003, Maltbury supplied Komedia with an initial package of Metrodeck when the venue underwent a major overhaul. Because of the theatre's schedule, it truly puts Maltbury's popular staging system to the test. The system is regularly moved around to accommodate the widely differing performances taking place: bands such as Supergrass and The Tiger Lillies, theatre productions for all ages, poetry and stand-up. The Metrodeck system has made this task possible.

Komedia's technical manager Chris Williams says: "This is a very ver

UK - The Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) has undergone a major refurbishment programme. As a major part of the this project, the Solent Hall has installed twenty Hall Stage ASM D8++ 1,000kg chain hoists to provide a permanent in-house mother truss for the room's own stage lighting and loading platform for incoming shows & events.

D8++ hoists fulfil the requirements of German safety standard BGV D8+, meaning that once a load has been positioned, no further safety device, such as a load arrestor or secondary safety line is required.

Halls also installed bespoke truss and cable management systems for 96 ways of dimming for the new house LX system in the venue which is owned and managed by Bournemouth Borough Council, operating alongside its sister venues, The Pavilion Theatre and Ballroom and The Pier Theatre to provide some of the best technical facilities in the UK.

UK - Drapes specialists J&C Joel has supplied the acclaimed Yehudi Menuhin School for gifted young musicians, with 14 special acoustic drapes for two levels of its new 315 seat Menuhin Concert Hall.

The funding impetus for the £5 million project came with the death of Menuhin, the school's founder and mentor, in 1999. The new venue was finally completed and opened in January. Lead Architect Mark Foley of Burrell Foley Fischer worked closely with the School's acoustician Bob Essert of Sound Space Design and theatre consultants Anne Minors Performance Consultants.

The Menuhin Hall is a chamber music venue and a daily performance and rehearsal space for school use. The students are primarily string and piano players, however they also participate in school choirs, and student rock groups are starting up. Additionally, the Hall is available to hire for other music events and

Belgium - AMX unveiled at ISE in Brussels three new products to its line of NetLinx integrated controllers. The next-generation NI-2100, NI-3100 and NI-4100 offer "many exciting new benefits for both dealers and end users, including significant reductions to programming time and an enhanced user experience".

The NI-2100, NI-3100 and NI-4100 offer the same form factor as their predecessors, the NI-2000, NI-3000 and NI-4000, while offering twice as much memory and three times more processing power. These increases mean that system programmers can have more resources available to tackle elaborate control system designs.

The controllers are Duet-compatible out of the box. Duet is a dual-interpreter firmware platform from AMX, combining the power of NetLinx with the capabilities of the Java 2 MicroEdition (J2ME) platform.

Sweden - The Nobel Prize Banquet, which follows the Nobel Peace Prize Awards, took place as usual at Stockholm's City Hall. Among those in attendance were the King and Queen of Sweden, and other members of the Royal Family, a host of Nobel Laureates, politicians, dignitaries and VIPs, totalling approximately 1400 guests.

The lighting at this event is taken just as seriously as the prestigious guest list. Not only are there strict rules regarding rigging and visibility, the banquet is broadcast live on Swedish National television's SVT1.

Spectra Stage & Event Technologies in Stockholm supplied creative design and production management services, plus all lighting and AV equipment for visual requirements at the banquet. W-DMX transmitters and receivers were used to control the fixtures. Spectra utilised SGM's latest Giotto Synthesis 700 moving lights, Barco R18s for the projectio

USA - For the fifth consecutive year, Visual Terrain Inc. has successfully produced Organ Power In Concert for the Roland Corporation. This event was held at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, California. This is the eighth annual production in association with other Roland activities surrounding The NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Traditionally, Organ Power is staged with both live and videotaped performances. This year, set designer Edward Marks added another challenging element to the staging with raised turntables and serpentine ramps, creating intimacy to the expansive stage.

To meet the logistic lighting challenge of a revolving set, a large part of the solution according to lighting director Jeff Ravitz is careful coordination and flexibility. "Our goal was to create an intimate setting for each performer and at the same t

UK - Leading crowd management specialist Showsec has commissioned a new Health and Safety course for its supervisory staff after discovering a need for training at this level. In 2005, Showsec completed Health and Safety training for its 28-strong management team, but in trying to implement the next tranche of the development programme, was unable to source a suitable training course for it's supervisory staff. They found the solution to the deficiency by commissioning a brand new course set to run across the company's nine UK offices from March this year.

Showsec has continued with the investment and expansion of it's training and research department in 2006. The staff development programme will set new standards within the industry, say the company.

The IOSH-accredited Supervising Safety in the Events Industry course has been devised by Showsec's training manager Roy Wise, H

UK - Lift-Turn-Move last year celebrated the 50th Birthday of the production industry's favourite electric chain hoist - the CM Lodestar - with a special edition reprint of the original 1955 product brochure that was available at the PLASA show.

Demand far outstripped supply, so there's now a fully printable high resolution PDF of the same brochure available on LTM's website (www.liftturnmove.co.uk) in the 'publications' section.

LTM's John Jones says: "I could hardly believe the interest in the antique brochure, but it seems people genuinely want to learn about the product's history. The fact that it's changed very little in certain ways over time is testament to the true quality and practicality of its design, build and engineering."

He adds the fact that a piece of production industry technology is still in fashion after 50 years is an achievement in itself!

UK - 5 Star Cases has supplied leading lighting and rigging rental company HSL from Blackburn with 100 new Tour Grade road cases to accommodate a variety of CM Lodestar motors.

HSL uses 5 Star exclusively to supply its flight cases. Rupert Reynolds, head of HSL rigging says: "The cases are extremely well built and 5 Star always turn them around quickly and efficiently - as they are frequently needed at short notice. They are also great at coming up with ideas of how to case the odder and more idiosyncratic pieces of kit!"

HSL's new hoist cases feature a customized removable and interchangeable inner cradle (a fixed one is found in all standard motor cases) to accommodate the three types of motors that they wanted to house in the trunks. 5 Star designed and built three variations of these special inner cradles to fit a choice of three different motor types.

Italy - Turin is set for the Winter Olympic Games, which open today. The Games have generated a great deal of work for Italian Prolyte distributor Decima and its client Ital Stage. On Gold Medal Plaza, a silver Dome has been taking shape, looking impressive even in its unfinished state.

Ital Stage, partly based on consultancy from Prolyte, has developed the main construction for the silver Dome. The stage structure is a mix of steel and aluminium. Prolyte S52SV truss is used for the middle grid, B100RV truss for the main grid, combined with S36R truss which will act as supporting structure for an inflatable on top of the stage.

The inflatable structure provides a flow of heated air to prevent snow accumulation on top of the roof structure: the circular roof has an overall height of 22.8m and a clearance of 17m. The structure has a cantilever of 16m at the front, which is suppo

UK - Tribute band, Killer Queen, is perhaps Britain's most successful Queen tribute act. The band has toured the world, and performed at some of the most prestigious venues, from Bangkok to The Royal Albert Hall. So when it comes to staging, their needs are precise. In 2005, front man Patrick Myers had some very specific requests for Maltbury.

Their staging needed to be incredibly lightweight and versatile because of the range of venues the band play, and the fast turnaround that these venues often have. Maltbury's Metrodeck Ultra system was ideal. Its aluminium frame and poplar top makes it the lightest and easiest deck to handle. Perfect for a band with a tour schedule as busy as Killer Queen's.

Another advantage is Metrodeck Ultra's high-tech appearance, which is ideal for use as a drum riser in the main show (see photo). Myers was pleased with the products that Maltbury pr

UK - St Michael's church in Chiswick is an active community church with a busy programme of performances and concerts. In 2005, the church began looking to make better use of a raised area between the nave and the sanctuary where the performances were at that time taking place, and looked into options for a portable stage.

Torin Douglas contacted Maltbury on behalf of the church, and Maltbury MD Philip Sparkes, Douglas and Father Kevin Morris of St Michaels discussed the church's requirements. The staging would need to operate at different levels, be able to cope with the three levels of floor in the area, and be easily and compactly stored when not in use: Maltbury's Metrodeck system was chosen to meet these demands.

The final package supplied was one of bespoke and standard modules, which provided a good fit with maximum versatility, say Maltbury. It allowed the church to cr

UK - The Hammersmith Palais maintains its status as London's flagship live venue as The Shockwaves NME Awards return for the fourth consecutive year.

2006 sees the ceremonies technical production growing further in ambition, combining complex requirements from TV and bands to live audience. The TV show, produced by Remedy, is recorded live, and after the show has been recorded, the team have just an hour and a half to turn raw footage into a fully-realised TV programme, ready to air.

Nine cameras inside the Palais feed directly into three generator powered broadcast trucks, provided by Fleetwood Mobiles. A stunning homage to 60's science fiction and B-Movies, constructed by GTMS Event Solutions, will transform The Palais' main stage, themed as 'attack of the monsters of rock' and featuring Ian Brown, the recipient of this year's 'God-like Genius' Award'.

UK - Stage Electrics reports their first year as sole UK distributor for Dutch company Ice World went like clockwork. After supplying lighting, generators and PA systems for rinks for a number of years, the company had the knowledge to make the next step in this ever-increasing market.

The company provided the ice and infrastructure, including lighting and PA equipment for venues ranging from shopping malls to parks across the UK including Gloucester, Hampstead and Windsor. A more unusual location for one of the rinks was on the roof of a shopping centre in Victoria which posed some interesting challenges including pumping the cooling fluid up two storeys through a pipe run of 30m.

Stage Electrics worked closely with clients and partner company Aggreko and reports that there was no single day's skating lost due to equipment failure and all rinks opened on time. Using a highly

UK - Automation specialists Kinesys worked on their third successive Brits event, staged at Earls Court 1, dealing with all the automation and movement systems for the upstage video screens.

These were moved throughout the show creating different looks for the live performers, which included Coldplay and Paul Weller and separated the stage area from backstage. They were also used as stage entry and exit points for artists. Kinesys were brought in to handle this specialist aspect of the production by main rigging contractors, Outback Rigging.

The automation consisted of three Barco ILite 6 XP video screens supplied by XL Video, each of which measured 5m wide by 7m high, weighed 2.5 tonnes and tracked horizontally along a 55 metre wide StageCo 'goalpost' construction. This had an I-Beam fitted on the underside, onto which tracking beam trolleys were attached to hang the v

USA - The Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Council has announced the Rigging Training Recognition Program guidelines, application, and licensing requirements are now available. The program has been initiated to recognize rigging training programs for ETCP Renewal Credits. ETCP Certified Riggers are required to participate in on-going professional education to maintain their certification. After the launch of the Entertainment Electrician Examination in October 2006, ETCP will begin recognizing electrical training programs.

ETCP says that training providers who wish to have their programs recognized must submit a full program description, a list of instructors including qualifications, learning objectives and other requested program information for administrative review.

Canada - Gone are the days of static objects. On March 1, the launch of WYSIWYG Production Design Suite Release 16 will breathe life into productions by giving users the ability to pre-visualize shows with moving scenery! Objects are simply attached to movement axes (either linear or rotational) and moved along them with the moving scenery tool.

For even greater realism, designers can patch control of the movement axes (and their attached objects) and use a console device or a motion control system to manage the progress of the objects along the axes.

Some other innovative developments include a new camera control bar and the ability to easily import floor plans. In addition, overall stability has been improved and several performance features have been introduced.

WYSIWYG was just used for the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, is being used today t

UK - Vertigo Rigging last week pulled off the daunting task of flying five giant LED video screens in heavy winds and rain, high up on the famous façade of the Odeon, Leicester Square as part of the star-studded BAFTA Film Awards gala night. The company also rigged a number of temporary structures to accommodate the media and their equipment in Leicester Square.

Designer / producer Lucy Smail of production company West Design and Production was contracted by BAFTA (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts) to turn the exterior of the Odeon, the red-carpeted scene of many a film première, into a high-visibility showcase for the awards night. She and production manager Andy Cheeseman brought in Vertigo to handle the multi-screen installation on behalf of video supplier PSL.

Project manager Paddy Burnside was in charge of a job that took a team of up to 14 riggers at a t
