USA / Canada - Although electronic dance music festivals were few and far between only a decade ago, their numbers today easily rival those of their more traditional guitar-based counterparts. To best accommodate the ultra-wide sonic range and high-energy reinforcement that DJs and fans of the genre demand, a significant number of EDM promoters are turning to L-Acoustics loudspeaker systems.

This summer, two more of North America's top multi-day festivals called L-Acoustics' flagship K1 system into duty: Spring Awakening, which took over Chicago's Soldier Field, and Toronto's Digital Dreams, staged at The Flats at Ontario Place. With each festival drawing more than 50,000 attendees, Clearwing Productions supplied the gear and crew for the Chicago production, while Solotech did likewise in Toronto.

Malaysia - Sixteen-time Grammy Award winner David Foster was the star turn at the Arena of Stars in Genting Highlands, the most prestigious performance venue in Malaysia, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. For the concert, Nexo sent a technical team to the Genting resort to provide a complete review and recalibration of the Arena's installed Geo T line array system.

The Hitman David Foster & Friends Asia Tour 2015 dropped into Resorts World Genting for a spectacular concert. World - It's an old truism that 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. It's also true that Yamaha digital consoles rarely go wrong, which is one reason why Steve Weall, monitor engineer for Jungle and Crystal Fighters, has stuck with Yamaha throughout his career. He has spent much of 2015 touring the world with Jungle, a journey which included stepping up to the CL5.

Steve has enjoyed a progressive journey through virtually the whole range of Yamaha digital consoles, starting in 2007 when he manned an 01v96 mixing small shows and events for a local PA company. This was followed by mixing monitors for alt-rock duo Blood Red Shoes on an LS9-16.

USA - A long-established major player in the cable TV, internet and phone services sectors in the US, Comcast recently decided to create a new showcase store in Chicago. To ensure that the audio processing and distribution for the multi-zone outlet was of the highest possible quality, Comcast enlisted the services of New Jersey-based design and integration firm Diversified Media Group.

Among the priorities for the system design was to enable flexible signal processing and distribution throughout the Comcast store, which incorporates three 'studio' spaces devised to showcase Comcast services including cable TV and OTT (over-the-top) content. Asia - New dates and locations have been announced for Nexo's ETC training seminars, which are open to all interested engineers, system integrators and contractors. The confirmed dates are: Singapore 7-8 October; Japan 26-27 October and Vietnam 29-30 October.

ETC 2-day seminars progress from theoretical classes in general acoustics, line array theory and the case for point-source systems, to practical hands-on training with Nexo's different line arrays. Designed to help engineers and technicians achieve optimum performance from Nexo systems, the programme includes an in-depth look at networking and control software.

Germany - The Domicil jazz club in Dortmund is regularly listed in the top 100 jazz venues in the world by New York jazz magazine, Download. It recently hosted two sold-out evenings to experience a live CD recording and video production for two young jazz bands: the six-piece instrumentalists, Filou who describe their music as a fusion between funk, jazz and hiphop, and the groovy string trio, Duck Tape Ticket whose trademark is jazz improvisation.

Producer Julian David took the very deliberate decision to ditch the PA in favour of wireless headphones in order to provide a completely immersive experience for the audience as well as the best possible conditions for audio capture and recording. UK - Kent-based production company, Avenue Services, was appointed by The Salvation Army as one of the two production companies to provide technical production for its 150th International Anniversary celebrations in London's O2 Arena, selecting Allen & Heath mixers for all the venues that they covered.

Entitled Boundless 2015, the five-day event was staged across all of the O2's venues and attracted 20,000 visitors from around the world. Avenue Services provided full technical production for three of the venues and some support for the main arena too. Over a dozen different musical and dance groups took part in 18 performances across four venues - the main O2 arena, the Cineworld Sky Super Screen, Cineworld Screen 2, and Building 6.

UK - The South West Four Festival (SW4) on Clapham Common's south side is the latest in a long line of events that has called on the expertise of Capital Sound and the advanced controllability of its flagship Martin Audio MLA loudspeaker array. This time it was needed to contain the high octane energy delivered by a host of world famous DJs and dance music specialists, on a site closely surrounded by residential buildings.

UK - After the success of their previous UK dates, Penguin Media Solutions are providing another two day UK training course in association with AFMG to introduce professional users to SysTune, this time in Blackpool.

SysTune is the real-time audio analysis software by AFMG. It was developed especially for live sound applications and has been setting the standard for professional real-time measurement and display of impulse responses, transfer functions and other data. USA - Audinate has announced that over 500 Dante-enabled products are now available from licensed manufacturers worldwide. This represents more than a 60% increase in the number of available products in the last 12 months.

Professional I/O options like MADI and Dante make it well suited to live recording, event capture, or as a backup for critical DAW sessions, the company says. The unit records 64 tracks at 48kHz/24-bit or 32 tracks at 96kHz/24-bit, and is available with a single or dual/redundant power supply.

UK - With just under a month to go until PLASA Show 2015, pre-registrations are up 10% compared to 2013 and 2014, making this year's show already the most successful since the move to ExCeL in London's Docklands.

Featuring over 300 brands, with many showing new products and services, a major new initiative for this year sees PLASA Show adopting the successful 'Focus' model of a sector-specific, zoned layout, which will facilitate easier networking and make navigation around the show much easier than in previous years.

By the beginning of September, pre-registration data for PLASA Show 2015 was tracking at 10% up year on year over the past two shows, with 62% of those registered being either final decision makers or equipment specifiers. In addition visitors from 94 countries have pre-registered, against those from 74 countries who attended in 2014.

UK - Celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2015, the Beat-Herder Festival showcases an eclectic mix of music and performance art spread across 17 separate venues within a working farm near Clitheroe in Lancashire. Staged on the weekend of 17-19 July, this year's event was completely sold out and featured hundreds of acts. Headliners included Basement Jaxx, Erol Alkan, Leftfield, The Levellers and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.

UK - London entertainment venue, the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith, embarked on a major restoration project last year, completely renovating the building and, in the process, revealing a beautiful art deco interior. This was a significant undertaking both in time and financial investment and owners Eventim and AEG Live wanted the venue to not only look good, but to sound good. To this end, at the beginning of 2015 a substantial L-Acoustics system was installed, significantly raising its audio bar.

Germany - HK Audio's Cohedra proved to be the ideal sound reinforcement system for the 2015 edition of the renowned Reggae Summer Night festival in Hamm, Germany.

The outdoor festival, now in its 18th year, was headlined by German reggae superstar Gentleman, who performed with his band in front of a capacity crowd of 3,000 fans.

The Hamm-based events agency Matzka GmbH was tasked with looking after the festival's sound, and a comprehensive Cohedra rig was considered the optimum solution for the job at hand.

Matzka settled on a setup consisting of 24 Cohedra CDR 208 mid/high units (12 per side), 20 Cohedra CDR 210 subs, four Cohedra Compact CDR 210 C subs and four Cohedra Compact CDR 108 C mid/high units (used as nearfills), and the results were spectacular.

Japan - Verdi Viale is a new health and fitness centre in Yotsukaido, Japan, a suburb that's a half-hour east of Tokyo. It stands alone in a purpose-built two-story building and has a comprehensive range of amenities to help its clients achieve "life balance". Specifically, Verdi Viale is split into three studios: a cardio studio, a yoga studio, and a machine room.

With the assistance of Morimoto Naniwa Sound Projects Co., Ltd. of Tokyo, Verdi Viale supplied each studio with its own powerful sound playback and instructor reinforcement system. Andy Huffer of HD Pro explained, "We were contacted by Matt Cox of iMatt, who handles the live midi and system programming for The Chemical Brothers. The band was looking to retire their much-loved but road-worn eight-bus studio console from on-stage mixing duties. Arts Cuts Campaign - Equity has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the "catastrophic" effect that further cuts could have on the arts. The campaign, Stop Arts Cuts, has been created by the union to make the case for cultural investment to government in the face of ongoing austerity measures. It follows a Treasury announcement that government departments such as the Department for Culture, Media and Sport should prepare for budget reductions of up to 40% in the spending review, the outcome of which will be revealed in November. Equity assistant general secretary Stephen Spence, who is leading the campaign for Equity, said that the arts "simply cannot sustain any more cuts". He added, "Our view is that it would have quite a dramatic effect. You will start to get theatres closing."
