UK - Light Bureau scooped the top prize in the Workplace Lighting category at the 2011 Lighting Design Awards. The ceremony, held at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane saw over 700 of the UK's top lighting personnel gather to celebrate the very best of lighting design projects from the past 12 months.

Light Bureau was awarded winner in the Workplace Lighting category for their work at KPMG's new Canary Wharf headquarters project. The judges said of KPMG's space "this is such a fun and stimulating environment that the judges all said that they would like to work there."

UK - Unusual Rigging's work on the Wizard of Oz wasn't just unusually big, it was also unusually heavy. The show uses two scissor lifts in the basement, which weigh in at four tons each, while the steelwork which was installed in the basement to support the set weighs 20 tonnes.

"We went in to the theatre to begin the three week fit-out, installing the mother truss with 40 chain hoists and tracking beams to help get the steelwork into the basement," explains project manager Simon Stone. "But the Royal Variety Show took place half way through, so the production crew for that came in and took possession, laying their show floor over ours for the duration."

The chain hoists and 300ft of truss above the stage enable the set to be flown in and out of place. But, in a theatre as old as the London Palladium, none of the counterweight sets were heavy

UK - Exhibition production company Standby were the first to use NanoLumens flexible LED screen, showcasing the action in the Skoda Bike Arena at The London Bike Show 2011. The eye catching lightweight display was hung on truss above the live action from stunt performers in the Skoda Bike Arena, relaying sponsor videos, associated footage and company logos to promote the arena throughout Excel to the visiting crowds.

Dave Cooper of Standby explained: "We are the first production company to use the NanoLumens display since it was brought to the UK in January. It is a 112" display with all the picture quality and brightness of LED, but its lightweight and easy to install properties means it could be hung above the arena with very little infrastructure. Our clients were able to show full motion footage on this incredible large display with the minimum of fuss."

UK - Crawley's Hawth Theatre has installed installation a Yamaha digital mixing system. Opened in 1988, the West Sussex venue offers a lively and diverse programme, featuring over 350 annual performances.

The theatre's facilities include an 855 seat main space, a smaller 146 seat studio space, exhibition space, eight meeting rooms, coffee shop and bistro, two bars and an outdoor marquee and amphitheatre which are used for performances throughout the summer.

A recent technical upgrade has seen a Yamaha M7CL-48ES digital mixing console, together with three SB168-ES stage boxes, purchased for the main theatre.

Supplied by AC Lighting, the system was chosen because of the experiences of the in-house technical crew, led by technical manager Chris Wilcox.

USA - Nemetschek Vectorworks extends congratulations to Chris Riebold, the grand prize winner of the Behind the Scenes raffle at this year's United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) conference. Riebold, who works at Charlotte's Norman Sound & Productions, will receive a professional license of the 2011 version of Vectorworks Spotlight with Renderworks software.

Behind the Scenes is a programme developed by The ESTA Foundation to provide entertainment technology industry members with grants for emergency situations, such as serious illness, injury or death. Finland - ETC's Finnish dealer Studiotec has held its fourth annual Congo group training session in Helsinki. Over the course of three days, Oskar Krogell and several colleagues taught 30 people how to programme and run a show, from introduction to advanced level.

"With two students to each desk, users were able to work together while still getting plenty of hands-on time with the desk," says Krogell. "We've held the training around the same time every year since 2007, and it's always been really well received."

The Finnish training is just one of a series of regular training sessions run by ETC and its dealers around the world on both the Congo and Eos lines, which includes Congo and Congo jr; and Eos, Ion and Element. Ad hoc sessions can also be arranged at your theatre or venue.

USA - AXYS Scope loudspeakers recently made their Broadway debut on Elf the Musical at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The musical is based on the 2003 Warner Brothers movie and is the tale of Buddy, a young orphan who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole.

The show boasts some of the best creative in the business. The book is by Thomas Meehan, who won the 2003 Tony Award for co-writing the book for Hairspray. The musical side of the show is take care of by the Matthew Sklar, who received a Tony Award nomination (Best Original Score) and a Drama Desk nomination (Outstanding Music) for his work on The Wedding Singer, and the lyrics are provided by Chad Beguelin, who wrote the lyrics and co-book writer for The Wedding Singer.

UK - The new PixelSmart from PixelRange has been snapped up for use on Saturday night prime time entertainment show and charity fundraiser, Let's Dance for Comic Relief - the show where famous faces perform some of the world's most well-known dance routines.

Lighting designer Steve Nolan and associate Tim Routledge had previously debuted the PixelSmart on the Royal Variety Performance. Nolan comments, "We loved them on Royal Variety and they're really good point sources because you can generate different shapes with them. It just gives you a little more versatility and movement in the background."
