USA - Bandit Lites recently wrapped up another Warren Hayne's Xmas Jam with a two day event that kicked off 13 December and featured performances from Gregg Allman, Widespread Panic, Michael Franti, OAR, Gov't Mule, and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.

Preston Hoffman, who has designed the lighting for the event for three years now, was tasked by producer Joe Dindas to create something spectacular for the 25th anniversary.

"The idea behind the show was to do something that we had never done and that would push the show over the top," explained Hoffman. "This is always a tricky subject because every dollar I spend for this show is one less dollar that goes to Habitat for Humanity, so I tend to want to simplify and get the best bang for my buck."

While the US Cellular Centre has what Hoffman refers to as "special eccentricities" (in regards to the

Brazil - The cost of taking traditional exhibition space prevents some manufacturers from exploring the Brazilian market, so the APRS is offering a base on the floor of the AES, Brazil ((May 13-15, Sao Paulo) exhibition that allows a company rep to visit the show to scope the event and the market without taking space.

For just £1000, UK manufacturers wishing to visit the show but who prefer not to take exhibition space can utilise the meeting room and translation facilities of the Great British Audio Embassy and have their brand logos displayed in a British Brand Gallery, share in the networking events organized with the UKTI in Sao Paulo and participate in the bi-lingual brochure to be available on the booth.

The APRS, working with PLASA and the MIA, have helped a number of UK manufacturers to put a toe into the water of the Brazilian market.

Canada - The 1,185-seat Chan Shun Concert Hall in Vancouver's Chan Centre for the Performing Arts has installed a 360-degree system comprised of six steerable CAL column array loudspeakers from Meyer Sound. The upgrade has markedly improved both vocal clarity and sound distribution for the hall's variety of events.

The requirement was to evenly cover all seating areas, including 180 hard-to-reach seats in the choral loft behind the stage. The system also had to work at various heights, as the hall features an adjustable canopy to optimize reflections for different events.

"It was an extraordinary challenge," says Paul Alegado, project manager and associate designer for Engineering Harmonics. "During the review process, the manufacturers

USA - The internationally acclaimed Life In Color tour is aptly named. Aside from featuring some of the biggest stars in dance music like Calvin Harris, R3hab and Steve Aoki, the multi-city EDM tour, which bills itself as "the world's largest paint party" is a freewheeling festival of sights and colours with lavish spray painting of audience members, zip lines, carnival rides, dancing robots and, of course, an intensely bright, colourful and unforgettable lightshow.

The MVP 18 LED video wall panel from Chauvet Professional has been an "indispensable" part of this lightshow throughout the Life In Color Rebirth Tour, according to designer Collyns Stenzel, who has been the Life in Color lighting director since 2010.

This impact of the MVP 18 panels was very much in evidence during the tour's final 2013 stop at a jam-packed Sun Life Stadium in Miami at the end

UK - The Prodigy celebrated the New Year in style giving it some serious noise at a sold out London O2 Arena gig, with lighting and LED screens supplied by HSL and an epic production design by Andy Hurst.

Hurst has been the band's show designer for five years and was asked to come up with something awesome and fitting for the occasion and an incendiary set by The Prodigy.

Hurst took a photographic backdrop of a Harrier 'Jump' Jet as his creative starting point and designed the lighting rig - both over the stage and above the audience - to give the impression of the O2 being a giant aircraft hangar, and develop a big, bold and bombastic show aesthetic.

The rig had to be installed in a day, so Hurst had to ensure that the design was practical to get-in and rig a large amount of kit and be up and ready for doors. To this end, he also spent five days pre-programing in HSL's WYSI

Australia - The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) in Canberra has launched their new Theatrette located in the NFSA's heritage-listed art deco building. It will also allow the NFSA to stream HD content to any venue in the world.

Fredon was called upon to install a performance lighting system the rigging of which was a major challenge. However Allan Wade, Fredon's ACT manager for Audio Visual Solutions, describes the result as "absolutely spectacular".

"The fact that we got it looking so good in such a challenging ceiling space is a work of art in itself," he added. "Issues with the room meant it would be very difficu

UK - The end of 2013 saw Jessie J playing the major arenas of the UK and Ireland on her 20-date Alive tour. Monitor engineer Andy 'Baggy' Robinson's DiGiCo SD5 helped to ensure that the UK songstress put on a show to remember.

"I've mixed in my usual style of using a DiGiCo console; making it work for its money," smiles Baggy, who has to account for a four-piece band and three backing vocalists as well as Jessie herself. "I doubled up on quite a lot of channels for Jessie, so I was using all but six of the faders."

As well as monitoring, Baggy also had a comprehensive talkback system set up. This allowed him and the band members to all talk to each other during the show, without distracting the leading lady and he could also talk directly to Jessie when required.

Sound quality and flexibility are a given, but what Baggy appreciates most about the SD5 is i
