Hurst took the 'less is more' approach to lighting the Impossible singer's show, which he programmed during production rehearsals at Millennium Studios in Bedford, working a discreet jazz clubby vibe blended with urban edge in to the soul orientated show.

UK - MilTec (UK) Ltd started the New Year celebrations by delivering their 1000th LEDHead Batten2 into UK rental stocks. The recipient of the 1000th unit is Push Hires Ltd, based in Eastbourne. Push Hires are part of Push Studios Ltd.
Steve Hubbard, Push Hire's production manager had seen the Batten2 being used on a variety of shows and was impressed with what he saw so he visited MilTec's stand at PLASA for a closer look. A full demo was then organised at the Push premises in Eastbourne, resulting in an order for 68 units.
Steve commented: "The Batten2 was chosen over rival products because it is bright, compact, robust and because the layout of the connectors makes it easy to set up for shows. It is obviously a well thought out and well designed product. Our first job with them will be at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, on a huge exhibition stand over 80m long.

UK - A new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical in London has introduced audiences to two innovations: the story of Stephen Ward, who was at the centre of a political scandal in the 1960s; and a huge lighting rig that includes 65 ETC Source Four LED luminaires specially purchased by dealer PRG.
Lighting designer Peter Mumford decided he wanted his rig to be as dynamic as the tabloid-worthy musical, and chose a large number of Source Four LED luminaires after seeing their versatility on King Kong in Melbourne. "ETC has managed to create hugely successful LED fixtures with the Source Four LED," he says. "ETC seems to have cracked the problem of making an LED source that works through lenses."

UK - Fans of BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing are flocking to a 21 date live UK arena tour to see seven celebrity dancers and their professional partners show off their moves on stage. Four Yamaha digital mixers are ensuring that the sound is top quality.
Taking place in January and February, South Wales-based Sonalyst has designed and facilitated the Strictly tour's sound and lighting for a number of years. Managing director and sound designer Rory Madden chose a pair of Yamaha PM5Ds, an M7CL and an LS9 to deliver the 2014 production's intricate mix.
The show follows the format of the television show, each couple dancing twice and receiving comments from the judges, a full production number, routines by the professional dancers, an audience vote (by text message) and presentation to the night's winning couple.

PRG's Andrew Strachan worked alongside Jason Culverwell from Stomp Productions as production manager and Paul Emery, lighting designer to supply the lighting and rigging for the show in Paris from 21 January to 9 February.
Within Paul's lighting design he utilised Vari-Lites, Impression X4s & Pixelline with a traditional theatrical generic rig making up the back-bone of the design.

Ryan Lampa, TobyMac's FOH engineer for the past nine years, first experienced Leo during TobyMac's performance at a benefit concert in 2013.

UK - Event production skills training centre Backstage Academy has announced its new BS 7909 course. The two-day course is aimed at people working in the entertainment and events industry who want to gain an understanding of temporary electrical systems.
Based on the BS 7909 code of practice, which applies to a wide range of events, delegates will learn about the design, implementation and operation of temporary electrical systems.
Said Backstage Academy technical director Gareth Welbourn, "With the development of new technologies in our industry, we are working in an increasingly 'plug and play' environment where it is easy to become complacent about electrical design."
The BS 7909 standards were introduced in 2008 and are increasingly cited by venues as the minimum requirement for those working on the electrical systems to ensure compliance.
