UK - Deaf and hard of hearing audiences are about to experience, for the first time, a new display technology called Invisible Subtitles which relies on similar technology used in 3D stereoscopic systems. A row of specially developed, High Definition, 43-inch monitors, to the side of the stage, appear dark grey to the general audience. Viewers who wish to see captions throughout the show simply wear lightweight glasses, which look like 3D glasses.

Inventor, Jack Ezra says, "A great deal of work went into developing our LCD panel, backlight and software and future versions will allow a live or recorded person to be displayed doing sign-language. What audiences experience are clear captions or the signer in full colour, stretched across the display while the rest of the audience see nothing but a dark grey screen."

USA - Two of this season's most successful regional festivals took place this August in Oregon where the five-year-old BI-MART Willamette Country Music Festival in Brownsville (15-17 August) drew upwards of 25,000 fans who came to hear acts like Blake Shelton, Gary Allen and Eric Church. Regional discount retailer BI-MART also launched a new sister festival in Sixes this year, the Cape Blanco Country Music Festival (1-3 August), which attracted as many as 15,000 to hear Brad Paisley, Eric Church and Justin Moore, among others.

These two festivals represented country music at its best, but what really tied both together - aside from their mutual corporate sponsor - was the sound provided at each site by U.S. Audio & Lighting's L-Acoustics K2 system. "The music sounded excellent in both places," says Patrick Coughlin, general manager of U.S. Audio & Lighting North, the N

USA - Sound engineer and businessman, Michael Stahl passed away on Saturday, 20 September, 2014 after succumbing to an extended illness, he was 68 years old.

Michael was raised around music from an early age growing up in the greater Washington DC area. He was fascinated as a child by sound and how every "noise" has its own unique and distinct collection of frequencies. "When I was growing up, I had no idea as to how these sounds could be changed or modified. I think my fascination was due, at least in part, to being surrounded by glorious classical music," Stahl said last year.

Stahl's mother was the co-principal cellist of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and many string quartet rehearsals were held in the living room of the Stahl home. What Michael did not realize at the time was that a string quartet was composed of superior musician

UK - For over 60 years the Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been a centrepiece of the various annual festivals that take place in the city throughout August. Renowned for the precision of its performances, 2014 saw a DiGiCo SD10 console marching to a military beat.

Delivering seamless sound around the high temporary stands erected at Edinburgh Castle is always a challenge, as the weather can change from calm to very windy, from dry to thick fog or torrential rain in minutes. Adding to the challenge is the backdrop of the castle itself, which is visually stunning, but provides a large, hard surface for slapback.

For 2014, the audio team tasked with this challenging project comprised sound designer
