UK - The UK 's dedicated technical showcase for contemporary solutions in theatre and auditoria, the ABTT Theatre Show 2005 (15-16 June, Royal Horticultural Halls) will present a variety of advanced automation and control systems for power flying, designed in line with the new industry standard - BS 7906-1 (Use of lifting equipment for performance, broadcast and similar applications. Part 1 Code of Practice for installation, use and removal of above stage equipment (excluding trusses and towers).

The ABTT has been closely involved in writing BS 7906-1, which complements the existing BS 7905-1. It draws heavily upon the existing ABTT published Code of Practice for Flying and contains additional advice on the use of power flying. The ABTT Code will be revised to reflect the new Standard, once the full impact of the Work at Height Regulations is assessed. Pressures from the Work at Height Regulations (to avoid work at height whenever possible), combined with growing concerns over manual handling of counterweights onto cradles, will mean that the number of power flying system installations will dramatically increase in both existing and new build theatres.

Flying and rigging specialist, Hall Stage will showcase its ABTT and PLASA Innovation award-winning DGS Couterweight Drive Hoist at ABTT 2005. As an affordable and practical powered flying system that features ASM's revolutionary steel band technology, it provides an effective alternative to traditional counterweight loading. Designed and built to the highesr specifications by experienced stage rigging and flying crew, the DGS eradicates the arduous loading and unloading process, and eliminates the need for large crews, working long hours in poor working conditions. It delivers a contemporary solution that can be retrofitted, with minimum fuss, to most existing counterweight frames.

Hall Stage's MD, Charles Haines, commented: "I've been attending the ABTT in one guise or another for over 25 years, most recently as a supplier and MD of one of the oldest businesses in the business. It is rewarding to have received industry accolades and the opportunity to provide innovative products to the current generation who are full of enthusiasm and new ideas."

As the exclusive UK distributor for Hoffend's Vortek, Slingco will display its theatrical rigging system at ABTT 2005 that automates and manages the raising and lowering of scenery, lighting bars, curtains etc, safely and efficiently. Dramatically different from traditional counterweight systems, it eliminates the climb to the loading gallery, dangerous steel weights, locking rails, ropes, and all the other problems associated with "old-style" rigging systems. A cost-effective solution, it is safe and easy to run by an operator with limited technical knowledge. Vortek is the flying equivalent to plug and play and is infinitely safer than counterweights.

Also meeting modern day health and safety issues, Stage Technologies will present their sophisticated automation control systems for power flying at ABTT 2005. The company has supplied some of the most advanced systems and mechanical solutions for venues around the world including, The Royal Opera House, London, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and Cirque de Soleil production of KA in Las Vegas. Approaching a sell-out position, this year's ABTT Show promises to be the most exciting yet, with a host of new product launches dedicated to providing advanced solutions for contemporary theatre applications.
