City Impact recently embarked on a project to build a state-of-the-art auditorium that would set a new benchmark for worship venues.
Ian Anderson of Mitech Consulting was engaged as the primary technical and production consultant for the job. Under his direction Scott Willsallen of Auditoria mastered the audio design and Mark Hansen of Hansen and Associates was responsible for the architectural and acoustic design of the performance space.
Capable of holding up to 2,000 people, the Sanctuary needed to produce a powerful sound with excellent vocal clarity and accurate musical reproduction, despite the significant problem of reflective surfaces that existed on both the sides and the rear of the room. Extensive acoustic treatment was applied on all surfaces in order to counter the 118Hz room resonance.
Oceania Audio, based in Auckland, were chosen to supply, install and commission the audio system. Oceania also supplied the theatrical lighting for the new venue. The set-up consisting of flown L and R arrays of eleven 5- degree Adamson SpekTrix enclosures with a 15 degree SpekTrix W as downfill, and a single flown T-21Sub at the centre, flanked by two T-21 Subs on the ground gave them a strong and punchy bottom end, providing consistent levels throughout the space.
Mark Mortlock, executive director at City Impact noted that "a significant effort was put into the design of the system, so the in the end it would deliver a comprehensive and purposeful solution for an environment that demands flexibility and ease of use. The Adamson SpekTrix Line Array system was able to provide the definition and clarity City Impact Church was looking for."
The installation was powered with Lab.gruppen amplifiers, processed with Lake, and also included four Yamaha IF2112AS loudspeakers as front- and side-fills, and two digital Yamaha M7CL consoles at FOH and monitors.
