Sound designer John Leonard will look at recording sound effects
UK - The Association of Sound Designers (ASD) has announced its Winter School 2017 - a week-long series of theatre sound related seminars being held Tuesday 24th January - Saturday 28th January 2017. The Winter School covers a range of topics, with a different theme each day.

Tuesday 24th focuses on making sound as sound designer John Leonard looks at recording sound effects; Tom Espiner demonstrates Foley Sound techniques and guests look at using QLab v4. A panel of award winning sound designers will finish the day by discussing how they create their designs.

Wednesday 25th focuses on music, with an introduction to synthesis from Sarah Angliss; a masterclass from Richard Brooker on working with musicians; a brief history of music and a panel of sound designers Donato Wharton, Adrienne Quartly, composer Paul Clark and a couple of other guests discussing how sound designers, composers and MDs work together, where their roles overlap and interact and the best ways to collaborate.

Thursday 26th focuses on vocal reinforcement, with Zoe Milton leading a guide to attaching and hiding radio mics on performers; a seminar on float mic'ing; another on listening for EQ, phase and delay, and finally a panel discussion on which forms of reinforcement to use when.

Friday 27th focuses on acoustics and system design. AMS Acoustic's Tony Stacey hosts a beginner's guide to acoustics, d&b audiotechnik's Steve Jones looks at ways of simulating speakers in venues using computer software, Gareth Fry looks at matrix and EQ systems that can be used to optimise a sound system, and Stephen Baldham runs an introduction to using SMAART software to analyse a sound system.

Saturday 28th focuses on the future. The technologies that will change the face of theatre sound, and a look at sound education - what are the skills you'll need to know in the industry.

There'll also be a range of social events each evening throughout the week.

The seminars are aimed at undergraduate and recent graduates, as well as anyone else looking to expand their knowledge. Admission is free for all students and their tutors, as well as ASD, IPS and AMPS members.

"We last ran Winter School in 2014 and it was an incredible success," says the ASD. "We had over 500 event registrations between 150 different people, half of whom were ASD members and the remaining were students or tutors from CSSD, LIPA, Goldsmiths, Rose Bruford, LAMDA, University of Surrey, Queen Mary College and others. Royal Central School of Speech and Drama are again very kindly providing us with the Embassy Theatre to hold the event."
