A group of students get to grips with the intricacies of rigging at The Backstage Academy
UK - The Backstage Academy is launching a new foundation degree in Live Events Production in partnership with the University of Bolton.

The one-year foundation degree, which is the only one of its kind in the UK, focuses on the artistic, creative and practical use of technology for live events.

According to Creative & Cultural Skills, the Sector Skills Council for creative and cultural industries, by 2017 there will be a need for 30,000 skilled backstage and offstage technical theatre staff to support live events. The Backstage Academy is aiming to train students who can help meet this demand.

Students will gain hands-on experience at the Backstage Academy thanks to its base at the LS-Live Studios in South Kirkby, Wakefield. LS-Live is one of the largest purpose-built rehearsal facilities in Europe and has hosted some of the world's biggest music stars, including Lady Gaga, Elbow, Kylie and Rihanna.

The course, which is currently subject to validation, will include modules on lighting, sound, staging and live visuals, as well as production design and specialist skills such as handling lasers and using 3D technologies.

In addition to gaining a foundation degree, students who successfully complete the intensive fast-track course will acquire relevant industry accredited qualifications, like the Event Safety Passport and the Powered Access Licence (PAL). They will also have the opportunity to progress onto the BA in Live Events Production with a further year of study.

Tuition will predominantly take place at LS-Live's new facility adjoining the rehearsal studio, which includes an Apple Authorised Training Suite, modern classrooms, a 3D viewing suite and 14 en-suite bedrooms, which can accommodate overnight stays and international students.

Robin Watkinson, chief operating officer at the Backstage Academy, says, "We can't wait to get the course off the ground in September and we're really looking forward to working with our first students.

"This foundation degree has been created by the industry for the industry and will be delivered by respected specialists who have worked in live events, alongside a team of established academics.

"I would urge anyone who has an interest in working in events production to consider this degree as it not only offers an important qualification but also a fantastic experience and the chance to make useful industry contacts."

Sam Johnson, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Media Technologies at the University of Bolton, adds, "This foundation degree will pave the way for individuals who are keen to develop careers in the live events sector. We're really pleased to be working in partnership with The Backstage Academy to offer this pioneering new course and we hope those who study it will find it both rewarding and useful."

The foundation degree in Live Events Production starts on 5 September 2011 and there are currently still some places remaining. The Backstage Academy is holding an open day on Saturday 20 August. To book a place contact Kelly Craven on 01977 659 840.
