France - BSS Audio features heavily in a new installation at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, which dominates the French riviera playground of Cannes. While the smaller Claude Debussy Theatre has a total of 1,000 seats on balcony and ground floor, a 16m x 7m projection screen and simultaneous translation facility, it is the 2,300-capacity Louis Lumiere grand auditorium, host venue of the annual Cannes Film Festival, that underwent a substantial audio refit in time for this year's event.

With a stage measuring 25m x 16m and six-language translation facility, a flexible solution was designed around upgradable Harman Pro components, with the venue now able to switch seamlessly between conventional theatre and 5.1 cinema mode thanks to the deployment of BSS Audio Soundweb digital signal processing. This is used in conjunction with JBL Professional loudspeakers (5674 and L4632T systems) and Crown amplification (CTs 2000 and CTs 3000).

This system not only offers perfect compatibility between all the devices in terms of specification and control, but will also conform to future upgrades of the HiQnet control protocol.

BSS Audio Soundweb 9088iis networked signal processors are used to provide fine tuning adjustment for the Dolby Digital 5.1/THX surround, while a pair of Soundweb devices was originally installed to store the system presets.

The JBL system was specially conceived to provide a level of sound reinforcement in keeping with the prestige of the event. A special five-enclosure JBL sound system was retained: Left, Centre, Right, Lateral Left and Lateral Right. The purpose of this design is to optimise projection of the L,C,R, proscenium system into the steep balcony (set at 50m above the ground floor). More than 40 of the pre-existing speakers have been retained to provide a true 5.1 surround field.

The digital installation now conforms to the criteria and standards of international cinema installation and has been fully authorised to provide the Festival with sound for years to come, say BSS.
