Germany - AV retail entertainment creators and provider, Cube Music, has been specifying BSS Soundwebs as the digital hub of its distribution systems into high-end retail sites on a regular basis. When Ed Manwaring of EM Communications was asked to put a BSS-driven network onto the Cube Group's stand at the recent EuroShop retail trade fair in Germany - using a pair of SW9016 video/audio matrix switchers and an SW9010 'Jellyfish' remote - it was not only to enable salesmen to stream different content to potential clients via the remote panel, as Cube CEO Fiona Ryder explained: "Soundweb has become an absolutely key element of our retail installations," she said. "The first time we used it was for a client at the Bull Ring and we love the whole flexibility and the way it works. From that point on it became standard for us, and so it was critical we had one to show on the stand."

At EuroShop EM Communications worked with the media content providers to relay signals to six 50in plasma media destinations as well as an assortment of TFT monitors. A Linux-based hard disk playback scheduler output the sound and video, via the Soundweb SW9088 master unit and out to the (8-in/4-out) Switchers and Jellyfish.

"The great thing about using the SW9016s," said Ed, "was that you can switch the audio signals independently from the video, whereas normally on other systems you can only switch the audio with the video. Integration of the SW9010 programmable remote allows separate control of video and audio from one user interface." He says that via the programmable buttons on the Jellyfish, which was positioned at the central table, Cube staff were able to demonstrate the appropriate programme loops.

Ryder says that Cube - which she set up five years ago - operates to a high standard of audio visual professionalism. "Historically some retailers have not seen the value of having a high quality of picture and audio. Via products like Soundweb we are working hard with our existing customers to overturn that thinking. These are high quality brands, and it's vital we reflect that in our offering."
