UK - In 2011 Crowborough Rugby Club said farewell to the old club house that had served them since 1960 and quickly realised that there was a noise problem in their new building and called in Black Cat Acoustics.

Club chairman and commercial director Graham Callard comments, "The acoustics were terrible. W had some early parties and people could not hear themselves speak." This prompted Crowborough Rugby Club to look for a solution and Black Cat Acoustics were recommended.

Callard continues, "We set two criteria - the quality of the acoustic panels to do what they say they are going to do and of course the aesthetics. Black Cat Acoustics met both criteria and the people we worked with were excellent. The survey was done very quickly, very professionally with good advice. The fitting was just superb. Dates were agreed in advance and delivered on time."

"It was time to replace our old tungsten cyc lights and moving towards an LED future was the best option," commented Padaric Meredith-Keller, senior theatre technician. "Not only will we save energy but also hours of labour time spent replacing gels and bubbles that would regularly die."

The department already owns several Chroma-Q products all of which have performed flawlessly. "We've been happy with our Chroma-Q products as they have a great light quality plus

UK - Colour Sound Experiment (CSE) supplied lighting for five main 'operated' stages and about 30 other performance areas dotted around the Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK site at the 2012 Secret Garden Party event, as the boutique festival celebrated its tenth year.

It is the second year that CSE has supplied lighting equipment for SGP, and a crew of 15 was once again chiefed by John Rickets. Battling with seriously wet weather on the set up and the resulting large volumes of mud, restricted access around the site made it an even more demanding task to ensure that all was rigged-and-ready for the sold-out festival to open on time.

The Great Stage was a G3 structure from G-Stages similar in shape to Glastonbury's Pyramid.

CSE supplied three sub-hung trusses which were populated with 12 Clay Paky Alpha Spot 1500s, 12 Robe LEDWash 1200s, eight Showtec Sunstrips, six CP Sharpies

USA - For an outdoor production of Dreamgirls in St Louis, lighting designer Seth Jackson called upon wireless and battery-operated Chauvet fixtures to light six 16-foot mobile truss towers that freely move across its 94ft stage.

Jackson and the production team for the 11,000-seat Muny theatre, billed as 'America's Oldest and Largest Outdoor Musical Theatre', were pleased to be able to light the towers properly. Actors in choreographed moves drive the six towers on stage. In previous productions, the towers-a "signature look" for the performance-were scaffolding on wheels, minimally lit.

"The truss towers are a signature [component] of Dreamgirls. They've been around since the show was on Broadway in the early 70s," said Jackson. "Michael Bennett choreographed the show with those moving towers in mind. I don't know exactly how they manage

"The future technologies available to use as a result of LEDs are going to blow our minds"

As a 14 year old James Simpson was intrigued by the moving lights being produced by the likes of Martin and Vari-lite but, as pocket money didn't stretch to a VL1, he decided to make one after school in his DT workshop. It was a new technology and he wanted to know everything about it so, using the stalwart tool of any young engineer - Meccano, he produced his own version. It even found its way onto local am-drams pantomime although Simpson is cagey about whether it would have passed the PAT test!

So: it's safe to say that James Simpson is passionate about technology and it's a lucky man who can indulge in his passion during the working day. As Lighting Visualiser at the Royal Opera House, with what he, himself, describes as 'the most amazing resources' he has had the opportunity to i
