Finland - Finnish pop singer Jenni Vartiainen rose to fame after winning the talent show Popstars in 2002 - as part of a band - and later launched her solo career in 2007. Now she is among the 50 best-selling recording artists of all time in Finland, and by the end of 2014 she will have performed more than 100 concerts this year alone.

Lighting designer, Pasi "Pasu" Koivistoinen, has worked with the artiste for four years. Latest project is her new album Terra, with the live tour that started in November 2013 and reached a staggering 33 summer festival gigs this year.

In early 2013, Pasu first approached local distributor Noretron Communication Ltd and its CEO Timo Kunnas to test some of SGM's fixtures in order to assess his possibilities regarding special strobe effects. These tests influenced rental company Uudenmaan Kiertuetekniikka Ltd to invest in

Poland - As part of the Warsaw Mozart Festival, which has been running for more than 20 years, lighting designer Adam Tyszka this year took on responsibility for an open air performance of the W. A. Mozart opera The Magic Flute. This opera took place in the courtyard of the 17th century Museum of King Jan III Palace at Wilanow, thus using the prestigious façade as a beautiful backdrop for lighting and video creativity.

The concept and location of this event, being open air and using the façade as a backdrop for multimedia content, limited the use of truss. Any type of roof above the stage would cause the truss/construction pieces to obstruct the view of video projections onto the façade. Therefore, the lighting designer relied on the technical crew's ability to protect the equipment located close to the stage.

Egypt - Media production company HiLights Egypt has specified high grade automated beam movement from PR Lighting for the first season of a new game show franchise, Minute To Win It - originally conceived as an American prime time game show, divided into a series of 60-second challenges.

Screened by El Nahar TV Egypt, and recorded in their studio in front of a live audience, the set features 48 of PR Lighting's XR 200 Beam fixtures, 36 of the XLED 1037 and 24 of the XL 300 Beam.

Lebanese lighting designer, Fouad Hadad, chose the PR Lighting fixtures because of their quality, and the relationship he had with HiLights, who are also the company's Egyptian distributor.

Emulating the set and stage concept seen in other countries, he deployed the XR 200's (housing the 189W Philips MSD Platinum 5R) in equal quantities between the overhead truss, which it shared with the XLED

UK - Adlib supplied lighting, sound and rigging to two main arenas and the Hospitality / VIP area at the 2014 Creamfields EDM festival staged at Daresbury Estate near Warrington, UK.

Working for creative and technical production specialists LarMac LIVE and renewing their long term working relationship with Cream - the brand synonymous with Liverpool cool since its launch as a club concept in the heady rave days 1992 - this was the third high profile Liverpool-centric event for Adlib in as many months. It followed hot on the heels of The Giants Spectacular and the seven-week International Festival of Business.

Creamfields 2014 saw a glittering array of the biggest, best and most popular DJs in the world joining the lineup. Adlib were working in Arenas 04 (hosted by Pete Tong / London Warehouse Events), 05 (Revealed / Super You & Me) and the VIP (Hospitality Audio System).

UK - When leisure operators, The Columbo Group, acquired two landmark east London sites recently, operating as live music venues, they asked Middlesex Sound & Light (MSL) to bring the technical infrastructures up to date. Their response, according to project manager Darrel Olivier, was to turn to Martin Audio's roster of potent PA systems for the solution.

The historic Cat and Mutton in Hackney dates back to 1729 - set over two floors it has been carefully restored this year.

MSL divided the venue into four zones, opting for Martin Audio's ultra-compact AQ architectural loudspeakers; they specified four AQ8 (8in + 1in) and an AQ212 (2 x 12) sub for the main ground floor trading area while upstairs they have installed two AQ6 (6.5in + 1in) full range speakers and opted for four of the same in the adjacent dance area, adding a DJ plug-in point. UK - South West Four 2014 took place over August Bank Holiday weekend (August 23-24) and was hosted by Lock 'N' Load Events, who employed audio rental company Capital Sound to design an audio system that would take into account the restrictions of an extremely sound-sensitive site.

SW4 is held on Clapham Common and, with residential buildings situated on each of its sides, it was imperative that the sound did not spill over the perimeter, whilst keeping in mind that 25,000 festival-goers would expect the audio to be of an involving level.

With MLA deployed on the main stage and MLA Compact in Tent One, Capital made sure that the revellers had the best possible experience. With acts such as Above and Beyond, Eric Prydz and Pete Tong banging out the tunes it was no small feat to keep sound levels to a minimum off site, but by using the intelligent capabilities of the MLA, Capita

Sri Lanka - The island of Sri Lanka recently welcomed its first ever lighting industry networking event as Chinese manufacturer PR Lighting hosted a hugely successful marketing showcase.

Commencing on the evening of 21 August, around 70 key customers from all over the country (along with a media representative) attended the event, which combined a series of product sessions within a convivial social ambience.

The evening was divided into four segments. The welcome and introduction was immediately followed by an opportunity to try out the company's new products; this led into a live lightshow, and finally a buffet.

Supported by local customer The Light House (Pvt) Ltd., PR Night Sri Lanka 2014 was staged at the Hilton Colombo. PR Lighting's Lawrence Mao, introduced the company's new season products, giving visitors hands-on experience before putting the automated fixtures thr

Germany - Held at the former monastery of Haus Hohenbusch just outside of Erklenz in western Germany, the Electrisize Open Air Festival celebrated its fifth anniversary on 9 August with a barrage of electro and House music from an impressive line-up of DJs supported by a lighting and video package that included Elation Professional Platinum Beam 5R effects and EVLED Series LED panels.

Rental company Ton in Ton Veranstaltungstechnik of Erkelenz was full service stage, sound, lighting and video provider for the event which included stage design and technical implementation. Ton in Ton's Frank Zander produced an exhilarating and complementary lighting design after preliminary discussions with the client in which it was decided to let the old monastery buildings provide the distinctive backdrop for the event.

"I developed a stage which was very open," Frank commented, &q

Australia - In his role as Thinker in Residence at Deakin University Motion.Lab, Garry Stewart created Multiverse, a new type of audience experience where visually stunning 3D graphics share the stage with three dancers from Australian Dance Theatre. The production is one of the first 3D performances to be created by an Australian dance company. Viewed through 3D glasses, Multiverse is an extraordinary new work that combines the power of live dance with the wonder of 3D graphics from one of the great innovators of Australian dance.

Multiverse also uses infrared technology; an infrared camera follows the movements of the dancers and an interactive computerised system responds to the data collected. This enables sound, video, and lighting to respond live to the actions of the dancer.

USA - This summer, undersea sounds captured by artist Jana Winderen temporarily transformed New York City's seven-block-long Park Avenue Tunnel in the immersive sound installation DIVE. The soundscape was heard through more than 60 Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers configured by Tony Myatt, a professor at the University of Surrey.

The installation was deployed along the 1,394ft-long tunnel that became a temporary pedestrian zone for New York's annual Summer Streets celebration. Greeted at the tunnel entrance by sounds of waves crashing along the seashore, visitors were pulled further into the ocean depths by sounds that included cod, toadfish, seaborne insects, boat noises, and more.

"I make multi-layered mixes of the material, which requires exceptional clarity from the loudspeakers," says Winderen. "Using Meyer Sound allows me to deliver the detailed dynam

UK - Sennheiser's new TeamConnect conferencing system has been installed at William's award winning Conference Centre, located at the home of the Williams F1 team in Grove, Oxfordshire.

In 2002, the Centre was converted from the team's base for its Le Mans project and now offers a modern and creative environment for its in-house activities, as well as hosting events and conferences for external companies looking for a state-of-the-art facility.

The Centre hosts an event every race day, where Williams' drivers and senior team personnel call into the Centre and talk to the audience of VIP listeners. In a time critical and highly pressured environment, Williams required a technology that would seamlessly connect the driver's call to the presenters and audience, every time.

With the initial introduction made by Sennheiser project manager Phil Cummings and additional input from m

USA - Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Walter Becker and Donald Fagen took Steely Dan's Jamalot Ever After tour across the U.S. and Canada this summer, with OSA International, Inc. providing Martin Audio's Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array (MLA) sound system.

Steely Dan has a reputation among audiophiles and throughout Pro Audio for their fastidious attention to sound production, so much so that many FOH engineers and system techs use a Steely Dan track to tune a system. When it comes to live sound, their expectations for the PA are no less demanding.

Returning to mix Steely Dan is Mark Dowdle, whose extensive credits include Elton John, Gloria Estefan, Fleetwood Mac, Tina Turner and Jackson Browne, to name just a few. Last year's tour included a stop at Ravinia Festival in Chicago, where Dowdle mixed on two seven-box MLA arrays, the first year of a new OSA installation and

Pub Rock - Pubs around the UK are being urged to host live entertainment - including theatre shows - as part of a new campaign launched by Equity. The Live Entertainment Works! campaign is aimed at highlighting changes to licensing laws introduced in 2012, which make it easier for pubs and small venues to host live entertainment, such as music and theatre performances. Under the Live Music Act, performances of plays and dance for audiences up to 500 are permitted without a licence. Live music events for audiences of 200 or fewer do not need a licence either, providing the event does not take place before 8am and after 11pm.

Hilary Hadley, live performance head at Equity, said, "We believe this is a win-win situation for our members and publicans. Pubs get more trade through people enjoying the live entertainment, the community benefits by joining together in a shared

UK - Bristol-based lighting and visuals rental specialists Fineline supplied lighting, LED screen, rigging and crew to the 2014 Eden Sessions, a diverse series of music performances staged at the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK, one of the most atmospheric and magical settings in the country.

For the second year, Fineline worked closely with Andy Cotton of TAO Productions, who production managed the events and co-ordinated all technical aspects. The Sessions ran over five weeks and featured a star-studded line up including Skrillex, Dizzee Rascal, Katy B, Ellie Goulding, Elbow, The Pixies and others.

Fineline's Rob Sangwell explains that they designed a highly flexible and practical 'house' lighting rig, designed so all the touring bands could come in 'underneath' with their respective touring packages. Lighting for each gig - although based around the fixtures available in the h

USA / Europe - Elation Professional's EVLED 20 LED panel takes centre stage on Colorado rock quintet OneRepublic's long running Native tour, forming a focal point of the show's diamond-shaped set look.

Production and lighting designer on the show is Chris Lisle, who created the tour's signature diamond-shaped look together with Scott Scovill, owner of video content and equipment services provider Moo TV (www.mootv.com), who also serves as tour vendor for the EVLED panels.

"Scott and I had both used the EVLED 20 panels on several other tours and worked together with the band to come up with the overall look for this show," Chris states. "With the uniqueness of the design, we needed a product that could mount easily into custom frames and need little maintenance. The EVLED panels are very dependable and look great."

Taiwan - An Allen & Heath GLD-80 digital mixer has been installed in the main auditorium of the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). The venue mainly functions as a performance site for NTNU's department of music, and other speech or music performance courses.

A GLD system is the main FOH mixing system, fitted with a Dante card for use with playback and recording software, and to provide multi-track live recording facilities if required.

Formerly Taipei High School, the university is classed as an historic building, and as such during the audio design phase concerns were raised by the audio contractor about room acoustics.

"Not only did we have to focus on the acoustic treatment of such an old room but also on the visual results. Consequently, we consulted with all the other contractors managing building works, lighting, rigging, stage, air conditioning and interio

Europe / USA - Long-term Sennheiser users Kings of Leon have spent most of 2014 on tour throughout Europe and the USA, promoting their latest album Mechanical Bull. Accompanying them at every show has been their trusty package of Sennheiser microphones and in-ear monitors.

The band and their engineers - Front of House engineer Brent Rawlings and monitor engineer Saul Skoutarides - have been dedicated Sennheiser users for over eight years. Vocal microphone of choice for the past six has been the MD 431, a microphone they are still very happy with.

"We have the MD 431 on all of the guys as it is very stable and has a very nice frequency response for vocals," says Saul. "It also suits Caleb (Followill, lead singer) better than any other mic we tried in the past, which is part of the reason we stumbled upon it in the first place."

UK - Orbital Sound has supplied London-based corporate AV specialist Anna Valley Displays, with a large-scale loudspeaker system focused on the d&b audiotechnik T-series design. Taking advantage of the T-series' ability to be configured as a point-source or line-array system, Anna Valley required a versatile solution to deploy across a range of corporate and event applications.

Anna Valley's new sound system comprises of 12 d&b audiotechnik T-10 loudspeakers, four B-4 SUBS and four D-6 amplifiers, and was specified to help address the company's market growth in the corporate sector. Andrew Newport, project manager on Anna Valley's corporate events division, explained:

UK - Envy Productions, organisers of Norfolk's Sundown Festival and inaugural Reload Festival, appointed Mojo Barriers to supply the stage barriers for both events, ensuring the safety of the crowds across two weekends.

Held at Norfolk Showground, Sundown Festival lived up to its name and kept the rain at bay, with the 54,000 capacity crowd enjoying pop and dance acts Katy B, Tinie Tempah, Chase and Status, Clean Bandit and Ellie Goulding.

The following weekend, 5-7 September, saw the first ever Reload festival which bought classic soul to the streets of Norfolk with Kool & the Gang, Billy Ocean and Sister Sledge taking to the stage. UK - Bookings for PLASA Rigging Conference, running at ExCeL London, are up by fifty percent compared to this time last year, providing a clear indication that the new, one-day format is proving popular with the rigging community. The news comes as the conference announces two important additions to its programme - Matthias Müller's Raising Your Game and The Piece Rather than the Rigging presented by Alan Bartlett.

Raising Your Game will consider the role of the chain hoist as the industry's workhorse and address questions that are often overlooked when making an appropriate choice for a given task. Hoists are an integral part of almost every show or event these days, which makes these decisions more relevant than ever. The session's presenter, Matthias Müller, will look at why specification should be an informed and holistic choice, rather than simply bei
