A major new nightclub has opened in Washington DC to reveal a large number of Coemar lighting fixtures incorporated into the design. Installed by Washington Entertainment Technologies, the 7,500-capacity Dream, based in the northeast of the city, boasts five separate dance areas. Owner Marc Barnes originally hired another contractor but the venue was under-specified. He then turned to Washington Entertainment Technologies to instil the requisite amount of power and lighting. According to general manager and partner in Washington Entertainment, Frank Wilt: "There had been a meagre attempt at the lighting and they clearly needed something more significant. We ended up respecifying the entire club."

The solution lay in Coemar’s popular iSpot, supported by Coemar Digiscans. On the main dance floor, the fixtures are mounted on iBeam trussing, with the light sources concealed above the rigging. The iSpot utilizes the new Philips 150W CDM-SA/T in addition to a sophisticated five-lens optical system. The result is light output and beam quality rivalling all other 250W units. The iSpot has six rotating, indexing gobos, six colours plus white and remote focus, all of which ensure a crystal clear image when projected.

The plan at Dream was to have 70 iSpots, controlled in a matrix. The complement of luminaires has presently been scaled back to 40 - 30 operating in the main room and 10 on the first floor. Wilt believes that the club will end up with around 60 of the mini moving yokes and eight Digiscans - as well as some ‘new’ Coemar fixtures still in engineering.

Wilt told us: "We are experiencing an incredible run on iSpots at present. From my end it’s easier to sell because what Coemar is doing today is what other manufacturers did 10 years ago - producing a better light for less money. The Italians make by far the best optical systems, able to generate more light output from lower wattage lamps. The iSpot 150 is the pinnacle of that theory. It is a tribute to Bruno Dedoro’s optical genius and Fausto Orsatti’s electronic wizardry - and I just can’t say enough good things about it."

As well as the Coemar fixtures, the Dreams spec also included Colorkinetics’ LED-based I-Color MR colour-changing fixtures and Clay-Paky Stage Light 300 luminaires, used in the VIP room. The venue’s sound systems are mainly based around EAW KF and JF series loudspeakers, with Crown and QSC amplification. Sources in the various rooms include Denon DVD and CD players, Technics decks, with Rane mixers.
