China - The first HK Audio Cohedra Coherent Dynamic Response Array system in China has enjoyed its inaugural open air outing at the 2005 Beijing International Marathon Relay in April. The Beijing Zenith Show Company purchased their Cohedra system in February, just before Chinese New Year, from German manufacturer HK Audio's Chinese distributor, Melody Development Company. So far it has been used for indoor applications only, but the onset of spring has heralded a move into the open air, debuting at one of the world's most prestigious outdoor spaces - Beijing's Tian An Men Square.

The 20th anniversary of the Beijing Marathon Relay saw more than 3,000 long-distance runners competing in six different groups - the largest number of athletes to ever participate in the event. A large concert was staged in Tian An Men Square to celebrate the anniversary of the marathon, featuring live performances from Chinese stars such as Li Shuangjiang, Wei Wei, Han Lei and Zang Tianshuo all perform live and a choir of 1,200 also took part in the performance.

The Beijing Zenith Show Company was handling all audio and lighting for the event. The main PA system consisted of 32 CDR 208 S/T mid/high units - 16 per side - with eight CDR 210 F flyable subwoofers per side, flown just outside the CDR 208 arrays. A further 16 CDR 210 groundstacked subs - eight per side - were used to ensure that coverage was more than adequate for the largest square in the world.

"We found that because Cohedra is small and lightweight, transportation and rigging was very easy to handle," says Li Zhenxing from Beijing Show Company, who declared himself most satisfied with Cohedra's performance. "Even from 100m away, the system still produces a very good high frequency response. There was quite a strong wind during the concert, but this didn't make much difference at all to Cohedra's ability to deliver outstanding results, which really sets it apart from other conventional line array systems."

The concert was beamed out live to the whole of the country by China Central Television from a nearby OB truck.
