Jason Ashdown, technical manager for Brighton Dome & Festival, approached A.C. Entertainment Technologies when the venue wanted to achieve an up light wall wash around the top of the Foyer, to provide mood lighting for events including comedy, classical, dance and other music genres. With plenty of natural light flooding the room from large skylights, brightness was a key criteria for lighting daytime events.
Ashdown considered several LED products before settling on the Chroma-Q Color Span. His chosen Color Span system consists of 18 1200mm length battens featuring wide lens optics and 48 LEDs arranged in four channel BRGB circuits. The units are connected to an 18-way power supply.
The Color Span fixtures are concealed behind a ledge in a continuous 21.6m length running along the top half of the Foyer wall, up lighting the walls and curved Dome ceiling. The LEDs are programmed with various show playbacks for different types of events, including static colour for corporate and classical events, or coloured scrolling for more performance-based events such as comedy and contemporary music.
Jason Ashdown commented: "The Color Span was by far the brightest and provided the most even coverage of all the LED products we tried and they completely changed the look and feel of the room. We are pleased that they are low in power consumption as cost-effectiveness was also a key criteria - previously we were using 1000W par cans, which became very expensive."
