Creative Technology immerses Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Utilising 23 Panasonic RQ35K Laser Projectors, the Creative Technology team displayed a 6K canvas over Edinburgh Castle - projecting the content created by Kate Dawkins vividly across the structure, bringing it to life.
“To project onto such an iconic building is the stuff of dreams and I feel honoured to be a part of this prestigious show,” says Paul Seeger, project manager at Creative Technology UK. “One of the most exciting things about this project is having the opportunity to do it more than once; this isn’t often the case with largescale projection mapping projects. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo gives us an opportunity to develop our hardware and software solutions as incremental improvements are made over time.”
To align the projectors, Creative Technology utilised VYV’s Photon media servers, working closely with the VYV team to refine the alignment in this challenging environment.
“One of the most powerful features of Photon is its ability to align projectors automatically rather than manually calibrating each one,” says Will Harkin, project engineer at Creative Technology UK. “This process means much faster projector alignment time, allowing the lighting team more uninterrupted time to get the show programmed. We’re also very excited to see some new advancements with this process that enable Photon to constantly check the alignment of the projection and fix it automatically.”
“CT once again provided the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo with projection hardware and a terrific team of projectionists and engineers to facilitate the creative vision for the 2023 show’s stories,” says Keith Duncan, REMT technical production adviser.
“The system consisted of 23 31K projectors with long throw lenses and 23 media server outputs accompanied by a 12-camera auto projector alignment system. The impressive alignment software known as VYV Photon worked excellently even in high ambient light conditions. The seamless process from specification to scheduling and delivery working with Paul Seeger and Will Harkin at CT as always makes working with them a pleasure.”
