D.A.S. Audio reinforces The Topp Twins / Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra in the Auckland Town Hall
New Zealand - For the sound reinforcement professional, an outdoor concert featuring dub, funk, afrobeat and soul (as performed by The Black Seeds) and an indoor concert featuring acoustic guitar, vocals, and orchestra (as performed by the Topp Twins and the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra) are every bit as different from one another as apples and jackhammers. This is precisely what Auckland, NZ-based Edwards Sound Systems encountered on two recent projects. They both used the new Aero 12A line array system from D.A.S. Audio.

Edwards Sound - a full service sound, lighting and audio visual - recently took delivery of their new Aero 12A line array speakers, which are part of D.A.S. Audio's Aero Series 2 product line. These two very different projects were among the first applications for the company's new equipment.

Jonathan Hardie-Neil, managing director of Edwards Sound reports, "On 6 March, the Auckland Racing Club held its Cup Week Carnival, which included a feature concert that attracted roughly 5,000 people. "The stage for this event was located in the middle of the race track. Throughout the day, various DJ's performed in between the horse races and then after the last race, the Black Seeds performed. For this project, we flew twelve D.A.S. Aero 12A's per side about 6mhigh on our purpose built speaker towers. Positioned directly beneath the loudspeaker clusters, we placed four D.A.S. LX-218A subwoofers on each side. For stage monitors, we used SM-15A and SML-12A active wedges as well as an Avant 18A subwoofer with an Avant 15A full range loudspeaker for drum-fill."

For the Topp Twins / Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra performance in the Auckland Town Hall, the Edwards Sound crew got the call at the eleventh hour. "Originally, they were going to use the house PA system" Hardie-Neil reports, "but during rehearsals, it became clear that something more was needed. We received the phone call at 5.10 PM and delivered twenty-four Aero 12A's at 8 AM the next morning - for the show that night! Once again, we flew the loudspeakers twelve units per side -this time without the subwoofers, since the Aero 12A extends down to 63Hz by itself.

"The system had to be operational early for rehearsals and final settings. "We only had two setup techs available that morning and, yet, even with the TV cameras and crew seemingly everywhere, our guys flew the two clusters and had everything ready to go in less than two hours. The venue's lead sound engineer called me later that afternoon to express his surprise and gratitude at how quickly the arrays went together and how good the system looked when it was up. While he was certainly impressed with the system's sound quality, he was particularly impressed with the speed with which our guys put the system together."

Hardie-Neil concludes, "The D.A.S. Aero 12A line array will open doors you didn't know were there. The sound is top notch, they're easy to store, easy to set up, handle, and operate, and are competitively priced. The Aero 12A's were highly successful on both projects. With these speakers, you can give your customers something more than they expected, for a little less than they expected."
