For Duran Audio, the growing acceptance of DDC-controlled systems in theatres and live concerts has been the key reason for developing a smaller version of the 1608. It will be only half the size and called, appropriately the Intellivox 808, because of its 8 channels (6 low and 2 high).
The 808 boasts the same characteristics as its big brother and will provide a formerly unknown power from such a small unit, the company claims. It can be used as an infill loudspeaker in combination with a 1608 system, but will also be suited for applications requiring music reinforcement. Amplification and DSP are housed separately in a 4U chassis. By manipulating the beam settings, using Duran’s WinControl software, the vertical dispersion can be varied from 8 degrees to approximately 25 degrees. In addition to the beam-steering functions, the DSP also offers up to 300ms of delay and four bands of parametric equalization.
The 808, which has already been specified on a number of projects, starts shipping in November 2002, with the first units being delivered to Edinburgh-based Northern Light for a fixed installation.
