All new products are self-powered versions of existing products
Germany - UK loudspeaker manufacturer EM Acoustics presented a range of self-powered products at ProLight+Sound 2012; a move that breaks new ground for the company. EM Acoustics self-powered solutions are amongst the most advanced in the industry and bring new levels of flexibility to product function and integration, especially into digital systems, says the company.

All new products are self-powered versions of existing products. They all utilise the same amplifier and DSP package, keeping use techniques consistent across the product range. Denoted by the suffix 'SP', so far they include: X3-SP, X3-DFSP down-fill, MSE-218SP, MSE-156SP and MSE-159SP. Further self-powered additions to the range are planned for the near future, retaining the same features and design philosophy.

So what sets an EM Acoustics self-powered solution apart from the crowd? According to operations director, Mike Wheeler, the answer is in the passive crossover. "Whereas many manufacturers would remove the passive circuitry within a self-powered product, our philosophy has always been that the passive crossover is an integral part of the loudspeaker. Therefore, a monobloc amplifier is used for any product containing a passive crossover, (the MSE-159 is the first powered product of this type) thereby keeping the passive circuitry. In this way, DSP processing is kept to a minimum and sonic performance between passive and powered versions is maintained as closely as possible."

The choice of amplifier technology is also crucial. EM Acoustics has opted for high efficiency, low weight Class-D amplifier technology throughout. PFC (power factor correction) power supply circuitry ensures universal mains voltage operation, eliminating the need for market-specific products and related reliability issues.

UMAC Class-D amplifier technology from EM Acoustics' amplification partner, Pascal A/S, delivers "unmatched audio performance, with the highest dynamic range and the lowest distortion within the professional audio field". Oversized heat-sinks combined with temperature-controlled low-speed fans keep the running amplifier cool and quiet, even under the most demanding conditions.

Every EM Acoustics self-powered product contains the same powerful DSP card which handles high and low pass filters for MES-218SP, X3-SP and X3-DFSP as well as dynamic limiting and compression functions to protect the loudspeaker in extreme conditions.

"We are extremely proud of our self-powered range," noted Wheeler. "We've managed to develop extremely high class products in a time frame that frankly defies belief, yet all the while remaining true to our values and our philosophy that passive technology continues to deliver better results, even in an environment where you cannot bypass the need for DSP. We believe that we've managed to combine the two for outstanding results."
