One of the first companies in the UK to embrace the high-SPL compact Phoenix enclosure design, Event Sound has found the scale of its projects steadily increasing, recently completing its biggest show to date, an outdoor charity concert, headlined by Nick Heyward, for 2000 people. "We have evolved a long way from our origins as a dry-hire operation," says Nick Billinghurst. "The success we've had with the Phoenix system, winning a lot of open-air events particularly festivals, has given us the confidence and the custom to upgrade our inventory to full line-array."
With just eight top and mid-hi cabinets and eight PX2181 subs, plus six ZX5 enclosures for stage and engineer monitors, Event Sound can cater for sizeable shows, indoor and outdoor. "It's a very balanced system," says Billinghurst, "and using EV's dedicated new DC-One controller makes it very manageable. At a recent outdoor event with Nick Heyward, and Rolf Harris, we were easily able to comply with the environmental noise regulations because the Phoenix is so directional, and will provide coverage with very little over-spill outside the audience areas."
Event Sound is a keen user of Electro-Voice microphones, putting N/Dym 967s into the hands of Rolf Harris and Nick Heyward, as well as using RE410s and the new PL Series mics on all instruments and drums. "The show ran for 12 hours and a lot of performers - Soul'd Out, Temposhark, The Plants and Burdock - praised the faultless performance of the microphones and the Phoenix system."
