UK - The ARC Show will incorporate two new feature areas for its next edition in January 2011, based on two sectors increasingly high on the lighting agenda.

The Urban Lighting Showcase highlights a sector which has important social and environmental implications, four stands will show the latest innovations for outdoor public spaces.

The Retail Lighting Showcase demonstrates a buoyant market for lighting projects with retailers focusing on reducing their energy consumption, costs and carbon footprints.

The event has moved back to its original home of The Business Design Centre, Islington, which is at the heart of the capital's architecture and design community.

The ARC Show 2011 will take place from 12-13 January 2011.

UK - Culminating in a an innovative awards event, the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards' winners, including the best designed restaurant and the best designed bar, were announced and presented with their awards at Victoria House, London on 22 June.

In a bid to increase networking at its awards event the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards commissioned Cinimod Studio to create an effective and visually stimulating solution. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology was used to identify key visitors on the two 'networking pods' during the evening's proceedings.

The tags embedded in shortlisted designers and sponsors' name badges used radio signals to send their identity to antenna receivers. Projections then highlighted guests' key professional characteristics (projects designed, sponsor brands) as they moved around the pods.

UK - PLASA Events and The Theatres Trust have announced the first Ecovenue feature at this year's PLASA Show focusing on sustainable practices and technologies for theatres and performing arts venues.

PLASA 2010, which runs from the 12-15 September at Earls Court in London, is a major platform for the launch and promotion of innovative new ideas emerging across the event, entertainment and installation industries. The Theatres Trust's Ecovenue feature is a significant new addition to the event, designed to showcase the pioneering environmental efficiency practices being implemented across London venues.

USA - ETLive, the forum for presenting live audio products in a real-world concert staged setting, will once again be presented 22-24 October in Las Vegas during the annual LDI show, in parking lot Silver 1, directly in front of the Las Vegas Convention Centre.

technicians working in the theatrical or events industries. The course, Rigging and Working at Height in the Entertainment Industry, is designed to provide the knowledge and practical guidance needed to work safely when rigging equipment high above a stage or auditorium.

Over three days, course attendees will learn from industry professionals and trained instructors on all aspects of safe working at height. Classroom-based theory, hands-on practical sessions and discussion groups are all part of the package which is aimed at keeping everyone involved and active throughout.

France - Now in its 13th year, the Cognac Festival (la Fete du Cognac) was originally born of an initiative from a group of young winegrowers wanting to boost the profile and celebrate the world's most famous brandy. The four-day festival which took place on the marina in Cognac in south-western France attracted some 15,000 visitors from 8-11 July who came to savour the local gastronomy and listen to music from some of France's most reputed artists.

Festival organisers, the Association Fete du Cognac, called on local rental company Atlantic Sono to supply and run all of the audio equipment, who partnered up with Alpha Audio to provide the main PA and stage monitor system, all comprised of APG equipment.

Specifically aimed at busy project studios, the GS-R24 is billed as a high quality analogue console for the key mixer functions of preamp and EQ, combined with a choice of interface modules, motorised faders for automated mixing and MIDI controllers for tactile interfacing with software DAWs.

Behind the scenes, lighting designer Kieran Healy is tasked with creating a design that can not only handle such a variance in performances, but also support the live HD broadcast. To do this, Healy relies on automated fixtures from Philips Vari-Lite, including 24 VLX Wash luminaires provided by PRG.

"On this show, you have to be prepared for anything and everything," says Healy. "Some performers will want fast and exciting, while others will want the lighting to be subtle so as not to distract those onstage. But no matter what, it has to look good on camera. UK - The television show may have come to an end but the successful acts from 2010's Britain's Got Talent took to the country's local stages in a tightly scheduled tour taking in 17 city venues in a month. Dave Farmer of THC Design specified PixelRange, supplied by Port Talbot-based Sonalyst.

Farmer explains the choice, "The touring schedule was very tight so fixtures needed to be reliable, have numerous functions, offer the maximum creative options and work as we expect, as time to redesign the fixture layout or replace defective units simply wasn't available.
