UK - Matthew Lloyd, managing director of GDS recently presented to an audience of Industry professionals at an event organised by Julies Bicycle. The not-for-profit organisation was established in 2007 by Alison Tickell. The company was set up to tackle the issue of climate change and promote sustainability within the music, theatre and creative industries. Julies Bicycle has brought together a coalition of scientific and industry figures to map the carbon profile of their industries and take practical steps to reduce it.

The event was held at Julies Bicycle headquarters, the Bush Theatre London and brought together a host of authorities including theatre technicians, consultants, venue managers and lighting designers and was sponsored by GDS distributors White Light and Stage Electrics. Matthew Lloyd was invited as a guest speaker to present the environmental attributes of GDS's award winning ArcSystem. The focus of the event was to identify sustainable lighting solutions for external canopies, front of house spaces, auditorium house lights and backstage areas and to champion the use of new technology to reduce the carbon footprint within a venue.

ArcSystem is billed as the world's first truly dimmable wireless auditorium lighting system, a new concept that provides a low energy future proofing solution for auditoria house lighting. ArcSystem is a greener and safer solution, designed to retro-fit into existing building infrastructure, the system is maintenance free and requires no lamp replacement or external dimming and produce much less heat than typical incandescent fittings. Perhaps the most important aspect is ArcSystem's low energy factor, each cell is only 18W total load meaning significantly less energy consumption, given run time and maintenance costs early estimations suggest that ArcSystem will provide a return on investment within 36 months.

Launched at ABTT 2011, ArcSystem was awarded the Lighting Product of the Year Award and went on to win the Theatres Trust People's Choice Award for Sustainability, a PLASA Innovation Award, LDI Green product of the Year Award and the first ever PLASA Sustainability Award.

Matthew Lloyd commented, "GDS are proud to be involved with Julies Bicycle and we wholeheartedly support its goals and aims. We were delighted to work with our distribution partners in contributing to this event which aimed to educate the industry on the sustainable solutions available in the market place. GDS shares Julies Bicycle's ethos and are continually developing new technologies to reduce the carbon footprint in our theatres and performance spaces. ArcSystem is the first product of its kind and fills a gap, for a lighting solution that is sustainable, cost effective and future proof."
