As games play out on Brian the Giant's table top, young contestants, or 'humunchies', compete for the chance to run off home and avoid being eaten for dinner by giants.
With computer generated assistance, giants, gunge, a fantastically designed set, a very dapper Dennis in a sequined jacket and catchy slogans (such as 'if you're not the winner you'll be Brian's dinner') it is sure to capture the imagination of the younger generation.
Brian the Giant's home-made studio was created inside BBC's TC3 at London's Television Centre. The set took up all but a few feet of the studio with the massive kitchen scales at the centre; giant books made up the steps and in the middle was a very big bowl which held the messy gunge games.
Tasked with lighting the set was Lee Allen, who drew on industry standard automated and LED fixtures - including a number of GLP impression XL's, supplied by Richard Martin Lighting (RML). Purchased by RML last July, each fixture offers 240 LED's, making the light output almost three time as bright but keeping the same quality and all other advantages of the original impression.
Each lighting fixture was task specific. For example the GLP impressions were used on the floor for fluffy beam work and also behind the main stage design.
"Due to the scale of the set and the size of the studio, to fill it called for some punchy lighting and evenly dispersed smoke," said Allen. "The impressions are such a large lamp that they immediately fitted in with the giant feel of the show. With their big beam and bright output they filled the studio up well."
