Internationally respected lighting designer David Hersey will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Middlesex University at the Degree Congregation for graduates of the BA (Hon) Technical Theatre course run by Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. The ceremony will take place this Friday at the Arts Theatre in London.

Hersey has designed lighting for over 250 plays, musicals, operas and ballets. His work has been seen throughout the world and he has received numerous awards, including Tonys for Evita, Cats, Les Miserables and the 1996 Olivier Award for lighting design. He is the founder of DHA Lighting, and for 10 years was consultant to the Royal National Theatre. He is currently working at the RNT lighting Tom Stoppard’s new trilogy The Coast of Utopia.

Francesca Greatorex, director of technical theatre courses at Mountview, who nominated Hersey said: "I am delighted that Middlesex University are awarding this Doctorate to David Hersey. His work is second to none and he is an inspiration to the technical theatre students."
