Germany - Located in Germany's industrial and business heartland, the Hotel Franz in Essen has the twin purposes of delivering four star accommodation and conference facilities, while also providing jobs for people with disabilities. Ensuring that visitors enjoy high quality background music is a Denon DN-700H Network Audio Player.

The hotel is a subsidiary of Franz Sales Haus, the Essen organisation founded in 1884 to assist those living with disability. Opened in May 2012, the hotel provides jobs for those with disabilities, who form up to 50% of the hotel's staff and benefit hugely from the opportunity.

The Denon DN-700H was installed by Mülheim-based A/V specialists Hamann Media Tec GmbH and supplies background music to the hotel's foyer, lounge and bistro. It was chosen because of its high quality, but also because it can stream audio from a wide range of sources. At Hot

Switzerland - Panasonic System Communications Company Europe has announced a new development in the long-standing partnership with the IOC, as the official Opening Ceremony on 21 December 2013 marked the re-opening of the IOC Olympic Museum to the general public.

Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, the museum houses permanent and temporary exhibits relating to sport and the Olympic Games movement. With more than 1,500 exhibit pieces in addition to audio-visuals, multimedia and other speech mediums, the museum is the largest Olympic Games archive in the world and one of Lausanne's prime tourist sites, attracting more than 200,000 visitors each year.

After 20 years of existence, the institution closed last year on 29 January 2012 for renovations to be completed by the end of 2013. The break in public opening has allowed the museum to look ahead to the 21st century and evaluate how i

USA - Illumination at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, is an interactive holiday light experience where trees become a dynamic living canvas. Created by visual design group Lightswitch and hailed for its creative use of lighting, including Elation LED PAR lights, Illumination is a whole new way to experience the Arboretum in winter and has proved a magnificent way to draw more visitors there in winter months.

A non-profit outdoor museum where over 4,100 different species of trees and other plants are highlighted in special landscaped areas, the collection is brilliantly illuminated using over 300 Elation Level Q7 IP PARs, among other luminaires, provided by Chicago-based lighting equipment supplier Intelligent Lighting Creations (ILC).

"The installation challenges the perception that trees in winter are dead," says Light

USA - The Immanuel Baptist Church in Duncan, Oklahoma, needed a new sound system, one that would maintain speech intelligibility throughout its 800-seat sanctuary at any volume - that would reach well into the back of the church and up into its balcony, yet not create reverberations bouncing off of the untreated sidewalls and concrete-and-carpet floor of the church or from its stained-glass sidewalls. That's a tough challenge, but one met by a RoomMatch loudspeaker system.

FBP Systems, an AV systems designer and integrator with offices in Tulsa and Las Vegas, used just four Bose RoomMatch modules - an RM5520, RM7020, RM9020 and RM12020 loudspeaker, and a pair of RMS215 subwoofers - to create a single point-source cluster mounted above and just ahead of the pulpit that evenly covers all of the church's audience areas. The system was designed and modelled using Bose ControlSpace s

USA - After more than two years of construction, Beverly Hills' first performing arts centre, the Wallis Annenberg Center - or simply 'The Wallis - officially opened in mid-October with a star-studded, invitation-only gala featuring a concert by Natalie Cole. Since then, the centre's primary performance space - the 500-seat, proscenium-arch Bram Goldsmith Theatre - has been hosting a steady line-up of world-class theatre, music and dance performances sonically reinforced via the venue's new L-Acoustics amplifier and loudspeaker system.

The sound system was designed and installed by the Burbank team of Electrosonic, Inc., which handled AV design and integration for the entire complex - including the adjacent 1933 Beverly Hills Post Office, fully restored and repurposed as a grand lobby, café, gift shop, classroom and office space, and home to the 150-seat Lovelace Studio T

USA - The Rondileau Campus Centre Auditorium at Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, has been part of campus life since it was built in 1970. Named for retiring president Adrian Rondileau, the centre boasts several ballrooms and conference rooms, a large cafeteria, several common areas, an open access computer lab and a small dining room.

It also houses offices for the Center for Multicultural and International Affairs, the Student Government Association and Visitor Information. But the heart of this multi-use building is its 1,300-seat auditorium, which is used for concerts and theatrical presentations. The auditorium's sound system was in need of an upgrade, and the university put out a request-for-proposal. The system chosen to take the auditorium into the future included RoomMatch loudspeakers and PowerMatch amplifiers from Bose Professional Systems.

Denmark - The SOHO Lounge & Music Bar in Holbaek, Denmark has installed a versatile Meyer Sound system for musical reinforcement. Anchored by the self-powered UP-4XP 48V loudspeakers, the system was supplied and installed by Copenhagen-based PRIME A/S.

"People come to enjoy a beer or a glass of wine in the afternoon, meaning that the audio system only needs to provide low-key reinforcement during daytime hours," says Lars Christensen, venue owner. "At at night, appearances by live bands and DJs call for something altogether more powerful. The system had to be truly multi-purpose, and I am delighted that the Meyer Sound equipment fits the bill perfectly."

Peter Petersen, productions director for PRIME A/S, provided the venue's main lounge space with 12 UP-4XP loudspeakers, four UPA-1P loudspeakers, two 600-HP subwoofers, and three MM-10XP 48V subwoofers. Pow

UK - LSi Online has learned the sad news of the death of the veteran theatre consultant Richard Brett. Richard had suffered from mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer, for over a year, and died peacefully at home on 9 January.

A partner in the theatre consultancy Theatreplan, Richard was also known as the conference director of the International Theatre Engineering and Architecture Conference (ITEAC), which is due to hold its fourth event this year.

After studying engineering at University College London, Richard was trained by the BBC, and went on to work as managing director at Richard Pilbrow's Theatre Projects Consultants from 1967 to 1985, before forming his own professional practice. During his career, Richard was responsible for more than 50 major theatre projects and a large number of more modest performing arts schemes worldwide. He led the development of countless inno

Australia - Since the 1990s, Sydney's Darlinghurst Theatre Company have provided a forum for actors, writers and producers to express themselves on the professional stage. Proud champions of independent, sustainable theatre practice, they were chosen by the City of Sydney to be the managing company of the newly established Eternity Playhouse in Darlinghurst.

The Eternity Playhouse is the result of a four-year renovation of the heritage-listed Burton Street Tabernacle by the City of Sydney, a 126 year old Baptist Church, unused for worship since 1996. In consultation with the City of Sydney and architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, Darlinghurst Theatre Company has helped transform the building into a unique, state-of-the-art performance space that lovingly emphasises the building's original features while delivering high-quality technical results.

UK - Doncaster's new performance venue Cast is now open featuring a suite of four performance spaces with stage engineering, stagelighting, sound, and AV systems designed and specified by Charcoalblue.

Working alongside specialist architects, RHWL Arts Team, Charcoalblue's brief was to deliver a full technical solution for the spaces, to a predetermined budget and programme, that adequately equipped them for a broad range of users from local drama groups to national productions.

RHWL Arts Team developed the design of the fixed form, 600-seat proscenium theatre which is large enough to attract high-profile acts and performers, and the flexible studio theatre which caters for up to 200 people seated, or 400 standing, and facilitates a wide range of uses thanks to its flexibility of the integrated systems design.

Dance and drama studios complete the suite of performance spaces.

USA - The Harvest Bible Church in Cypress, Texas, had a challenging agenda: allow its 1,000-seat sanctuary to have an intimate ambience yet still have both speech and music fill the entire space intelligibly and coherently, despite a relatively low 18-foot ceiling and highly reflective surfaces on the walls and floor. And one more criterion: keep the PA system's profile minimal and as invisible as possible.

It might have seemed difficult to meet all of these goals, but a RoomMatch loudspeaker system from Bose Professional Systems was just the right solution.

Covenant Communications, an AV systems designer and integrator in Houston, used two RM12020 modules, one RM12010 module and an RMS215 subwoofer in each of two L/R arrays, all powered by three Bose PowerMatch PM8500N eight-channel amplifiers. That was all it took to fulfil all of the needs of this complex acoustical space.<

USA - Calvary Church of Naperville, located in the western suburbs of Chicago, recently wrapped up a five-month sanctuary renovation that increased seating from 2500 to 3000 without moving any walls. As part of the project, the church also underwent a full AVL system retrofit, which was designed and integrated by CCI Solutions of Olympia, Washington.

CCI church relations director Duke DeJong said the client put a premium on the audio portion of the project. "From the very start, the church was very intentional about making sure the new sound system would be more than a home run; it had to be a home run with fireworks," he says. "They were very specific in saying that the audio needed to be intelligible, powerful and flexible - spectacular in every sense."

With this as their directive, CCI senior systems consultant Mark Pearson and his team turned to three l

Italy - Although ground broke for the construction of Milan Cathedral in 1386, it was only in the last decade that its construction was declared complete. The massive architectural project took over six-hundred years. Milan attracts two million visitors a year, and almost all of them visit the famous cathedral.

To convey the epic story of its construction and to raise additional funds for Milan Cathedral's costly upkeep, the Cathedral Museum opened in 1953. In keeping with the long timescale of the cathedral's construction, the museum closed for five years and only recently re-opened, completely refurbished and ready to accommodate contemporary revenue streams. Among its new offerings, the museum added a conference room that can be rented for meetings and dinners. To keep costs low, but functionality and fidelity high, the conference AV system uses an Ashly Pema 4125.10 100V out

Rich Pickings - Taylor Swift has returned to the top of Billboard's annual list of music money makers, a title she held in 2012 only to relinquish last year to Madonna. The 24-year-old earned $39.7m (£23.8m) in 2013 from a combination of music sales, royalties and touring, according to the trade publication. Country star Kenny Chesney rose three places to second place, while Justin Timberlake came third. Rock acts Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones round out this year's top five.

Homecoming - Hit musical Book of Mormon is due to play Salt Lake City for the first time next year, near the location of the Mormon church's headquarters. It will run from July to August at The Capitol Theatre, less than half a mile from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' flagship temple. Written by South Park's Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the show pokes fun at two naive m

Russia - Within the newly constructed 42,500 capacity Fisht Olympic Stadium in the developing Russian city of Sochi, the XXII Olympic Winter Games drew to an end with the spectacular closing ceremony.

Just as he had done at the Opening extravaganza 16 days earlier, audio director Scott Willsallen (of Auditoria) designed the technological infrastructure, placing all the transmission on a 24-node Optocore dual redundant ring and working with two different creative teams to fulfil different objectives.

The formal operatic and cultural Opening Ceremony display, creatively designed by Konstantin Ernst and directed by Andrei Boltenko, made way for the more party atmosphere of the Closing Ceremony, directed by Italian Daniele Finzi Pasca. Featuring nearly 800 performers and representing hundreds of years of Russian history, it was an exacting task.

Australia - The heritage-listed Newstead Gas Ring is an iconic piece of Brisbane's historical industrial architecture that is now at the hub of a major urban regeneration project, Gasworks, a plan started over two decades ago to transform the formally derelict post-industrial wasteland into a busy and vibrant contemporary living, working and commercial environment.

The newly launched Gasworks Plaza element of this project stands below the superstructure of the former gas storage ring which still majestically towers above the land below ... and has now been illuminated with over 500 Anolis LED lighting fixtures.

These bring its Victorian architecture to life in a spectacular lighting and sound installation concept bridging the gap between its former functionality and its new funkiness.

The old gasworks that once stood on the site adjacent to the Brisbane River was opened in 1

UK - Push The Button Ltd (PTB), the specialist electrical contractor for the entertainment industry, has recently completed the creation of a new backstage artists lounge for the Barbican Concert Hall in London.

The Concert Hall, part of the Barbican Centre, is the home of the London Symphony Orchestra, and also hosts a wide range of other concerts, productions and events. "The existing backstage area that greeted those performing at the Hall was quite cold and uninviting," comments PTB's Nick Ewins. "It needed some TLC to provide the welcoming and relaxing atmosphere that the great artists who play here deserve before and after a concert."

PTB was selected by the Barbican to explore how lighting might be able to help transform the existing space. The company presented a number of options to the Barbican Centre, aiming to create a versatile lighting system

UK - Liverpool's Everyman Theatre, whose acting alumni includes Pete Postlethwaite and Julie Walters, has undergone a complete structural and artistic renovation thanks to the Everyman creative team, architects Haworth Tompkins and theatre consultants Charcoalblue.

In 2005 the Liverpool and Merseyside Theatres Trust enlisted Haworth Tompkins and Charcoalblue to consult on the complex and ambitious project.

Having just celebrated their 10th Birthday, Charcoalblue's managing partner, Andy Hayles, observed that for nine of those years the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Team has been their most determined client.

"When a project takes this long to get through funding hoops and complex site negotiations, the sense of achievement experienced when opening such a sensational building is particularly poignant," says Hayles. "The client and design team have become clo

UK - De Montfort Hall in Leicester, which plays host to concerts, stage productions and many other events, has recently received a comprehensive lighting upgrade courtesy of its local technical supplier, Hawthorn.

The upgrade consisted of one behind-the-scenes change, replacing the venue's dimming system, and one change visible to an audience, updating the lighting of the auditorium itself, all helping the popular venue celebrate the centenary of its 1913 opening.

For the dimmer upgrade, Hawthorn supplied and installed four new ETC Sensor dimmer racks to replace aging Strand LD90 racks, "De Montfort's staff were worried about being able to maintain the LD90s in both the short and long term," explains Hawthorn's head of install, Alan Jackson. "This ultimately led to the decision to switch to something in current production with strong support from its manufacture

UK - Stage Electrics delivered the lighting, audio and video systems to Milton Court, Guildhall School of Music and Drama's multi-million pound facility near its premises in Silk Street.

The result is a venue which houses three rehearsal rooms, a television studio, a studio theatre, a 227-seat theatre and a 608-seat, world-class concert hall.

Stage Electrics supplied, installed and commissioned the lighting, audio and video infrastructure venue-wide which includes dimmer racks, data distribution, paging and show relay, plus custom-manufactured stage management desks, facility panels, lighting bars, 'raceways' and loose equipment.
