Sheffield’s £46million Magna Centre has recently benefited from the opening of a new visitor attraction. The Living Robots Show is a unique feat of invention which uses artificial intelligence in an absorbing game of cat and mouse. In the center of the 500-seat arena, predator robots hunt down their automated prey in an epic struggle to survive. This technological game of 'chase' was devised by Professor Noel Sharkey (TV Robot Wars judge) and cost £200,000 to take from concept to opening show.

The lighting for the visitor attraction was devised by Lighting Technology’s Davie Bell who, in conjunction with the technical expertise offered by LT’s Andy Elsegood, specified, installed and commissioned a wide range of lighting and sound equipment. In order to enhance the Living Robot theme Davie specified Clay Paky Mini-scans, Martin Robo Colours, Strand Profiles, Pulsar Chroma Crabs, Jem Glaciator fog machines and a Litestructures truss.

From a sound perspective a GAE PA system is driven by a pair of Chevin amplifiers. The input is via an Allen & Heath Mix Wizard with the whole system being complemented by Sennheiser Evolution headset mics. General playback is handled by a Denon CD, with all other sound, light and AV cues being co-ordinated, during the 30-minute extravaganza, via Show Magic. "The whole show was designed to fit into a very strict lighting and sound budget, but at the same time we needed a large degree of control - without Show Magic we couldn’t have created the experience", said Davie.

As both lighting designer & project manager Davie’s job was somewhat pressured. Allied with a six-week timescale within which to deliver the show he commented, "it was extremely hard work but the Magna projects team had deadlines to meet and we pushed the boat out to help them."
