France - Wireless Solution Sweden's W-DMX got a standing ovation from the lighting crew of this summer's Festival d'Avignon, an annual drama, dance creation and stage performance festival held in the French city of Avignon. Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, it is the oldest existing festival in France.

Lighting manager Philippe Catalano collaborated on the festival's technical direction with Philippe Roy as second desk operator and network manager for Romeo Castelluci's Inferno from Dante's Divine Comedy. Philippe Roy was in charge of the dramatic fireball scene, a very special effect on the upstage wall of the famous court of honour.

The idea is to give the impression of a free-moving ball of fire behind all the windows, so that spectators believe there is nothing but void behind the wall. This fireball effect requires the projection of a light beam from the

Czech Republic - Specialist LED lighting manufacturer Anolis has launched its Anolis ArcPad 3.48, an LED RGBW 'brick' fixture, designed for colour-changing applications like wall washing and highlighting of large alcoves and areas where space is a premium and installation can be challenging.

Its neat dimensions and flexible focus options enable it to be squeezed into small recesses and other inaccessible corners, nooks and crannies, while the projected lifespan of up to 60,000 hours make it suitable for all types of 'fit-and-forget' architectural applications. It is IP 65 rated, so is suited to exterior use.

The ArcPad 3.48's head is a cast aluminium radiator onto which the LED matrix and lenses are fitted, and this can be panned plus or minus 46 degrees and tilted plus 60 and minus 90 degrees in relation to the base.

The cast aluminium base can be utilised for

USA - When one of the nation's largest cruise ships commissioned Gerry Hariton and Vicki Baral (Hariton/Baral Design) to design the set for their largest-ever onboard musical concert show, the Los Angeles production designers were determined to create a truly spectacular environment. The ship was Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas, and the production was to be held in its 1,350-seat Broadway-style theatre. "They were going to have 21 musicians on stage at one time, which is extraordinary for a cruise ship," said Hariton, who has been working with Royal Caribbean for a decade.

How to design a set for such an elaborate concert production? Model it after one of the nation's most famed cultural landmarks -- the Hollywood Bowl. Working with lighting designers Peter Moore and Mark Pranzini (Lightspeed Productions), Hariton and Baral emulated the legendary Los Angeles

UK - The latest production of Living's Most Haunted Live was set in a location that would raise the goose bumps of even the most pragmatic onlooker. The derelict and dilapidated Denbigh Asylum, was the setting for the live shows produced by Antix Productions and broadcast for four hours live each consecutive night for the week leading up to Halloween.

Antix Productions worked with Stage Electrics on the project having already delivered 13 Most Haunted Live programmes together over three years. The location, due to be demolished and redeveloped after filming had ceased, was initially visited by Antix, Stage Electrics and lighting director Warren Hodge in September, just eight weeks before the show. Its potential as the perfect location was instantly recognised.

Due to the dilapidated state of the buildings, Stage Electrics' Live Events team had first to ensure the

Singapore - The Singapore skyline was transformed by a fusion of creativity and knowledge as the long-awaited Fusionopolis development officially opened in October at One-North.

The centrepiece of the development - designed by the late Japanese architect Dr Kisho Kurokawa - is a S$20m (£8.6m) performing arts space suspended six storeys up between three 24-storey towers. Designed to look like a brain, the theatre - Genexis - is a flexible, curved performance space set to become a magnet for Singapore's most exciting artists.

The 120,000sq.m complex is intended to become a hub for the media and information technologies of the future and a creative environment where brilliant ideas are born: a nerve centre and, almost literally, a neural network.

Keeping with the idea of neural signals, Genexis glows and flickers with an interactive light show programmed to synch with act

Korea - Banpo Bridge in Seoul, South Korea used to be a rather ordinary connection across the Han River. But no longer. Thanks to a special fountain feature that dramatically shoots jets of water from the sides of the bridge, and a Martin Exterior range lighting scheme that dynamically illuminates the water show after sundown, the extraordinary water and light display has become a major attraction in the capital city.

The Banpo Bridge water feature shoots 60 tons of water every minute from some 380 nozzles located on each side of the 1.4k long bridge. The fountain was unveiled in September as the world's first large-scale water fountain from a bridge.

Canada - When the City of Edmonton Community Service Department wanted to enhance the night time appearance of the Muttart Conservatory they wanted to utilise the energy efficiencies of LED, so contacted ElektoLED's Canadian distributor Optilume Engineered Light Corporation for a solution. Elektor-FLEX RGB System was chosen, enabling the operators to choose from a palette of 16.8 million colours.

The Muttart Conservatory is Edmonton's premier horticultural attraction, featuring four glass pyramids filled with rare and exotic plants from all over the world, therefore the lighting needed to be equally as stunning.

The installation of the Elektor-FLEX was carried out by specialist contractors, assisted by Optilume, with commissioning carried out by ElektoLED Technicians from the UK.

UK - Over 50 I-Pix BB4s and BB7s were used to great effect for lighting the ITV's new prime time games show, The Colour of Money, presented by Chris Tarrant.

The lighting was designed by Tom Kinane and Svend Pedersen, who made the bold creative move of not including a single moving light or any smoke in the rig. They wanted to introduce a completely new style of illumination for the show, utilising a substantial quantity of digital light sources to match Patrick Doherty's heavily LED based set.

Recorded in Studio 1 of the London Weekend Television HQ, space also restricted which lighting instruments could go where, and budget was also a consideration.

Around the top level of the multi-layered set were 22 BB4s, rigged just above three G-LEC LED screens, defining the top line of the set. They were used to add punch and brightness for accenting stings, and for snaps-to-s

UK - Storm Lighting used a City Theatrical SHoW DMX wireless system to help them achieve their design for the annual switching on ceremony of London's Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree lights.

They recognised the advantage of having a wireless DMX link from the control position, situated on the terrace level of Trafalgar Square, to a dimmer location situated under the tree itself.

Martin Chisnall of City Theatrical London commented: "This is a classic use of wireless DMX. To bridge a physical barrier which otherwise would have taken a long and time consuming cable run through a public area. SHoW DMX was able to offer a fast, secure and reliable wireless link to replace this cable run. SHoW DMX's patented frequency hopping technology ensured the system worked flawlessly, even though several other WiFi networks were also present in the square."

UK - United Visual Artists' Constellation is a light-based sculptural intervention which has been designed especially for the London's Covent Garden Market Halls.

For this project, Tarmled supplied a total of 578 2m long, double-sided, LED-strips, and 37 DPDUs (Data Power Distribution Units), to power the installation.

Tarmled's engineers developed double-sided, video-compatible LED-strips based on its Tarmled Strip 25-modules that were premiered at PLASA 2008. The LED strips were incorporated into polycarbonate tubes coated with a semitransparent reflective film, in accordance with UVA's design.

Together with customised Tarmled DPDUs, the tubes are allowed to hang elegantly in the space, as the DPDU's allow for cable runs of maximum 20m from the fixture using a single Cat 5e cable carrying data and power to each fixture. The 25mm pixel spacing of the strips and UVA'

USA - An eco-friendly art fair with 'green' artists, curators, designers and lighting was featured in Miami's premier art show Art Basel.

The green art fair Miami 2008, held the first week in December, drew 15,000 art patrons into its venue - three 5,000 sq.ft adjoining tents made of recycled fabric and aluminium. Inside, visitors viewed a fashion show and browsed art made of recycled materials. Their purchases were also packed in reusable shopping bags.

Chauvet LED lighting fixtures were used to highlight the eco-friendly products. Nick Assunto, CEO of Visual Formula, located in Miami's design district, volunteered to light the fair using 82 Chauvet LED wash fixtures, powered by solar panels and a biodiesel generator, further lessening the eco-friendly lights' carbon footprint. The LED luminaires included COLORado 1s, COLORado 3s, LEDsplash-2 and Q-Wash LED fixtures.

UK - Nottingham-based E-luminate were contacted by Architainment Lighting, Philips SSL Value Added Resellers (VAR), to work with the developers of TRMNL, a new dance club located in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham.

They planned to redevelop a partially derelict, old Victorian factory into a top dance venue. The plan was to keep as many of the existing features as possible and combine this with an LED-based lighting system to create something special.

The brief for the LED lighting was to recreate the lighting system and atmosphere of the Watergate Club in Berlin.

The lighting system created consists of a 14m x 2.7m light box which runs 12m along the ceiling and 2m down the wall at the back of the DJ booth. The lighting is provided by 910 Philips icolor Flex SLX nodes supplied by Architainment Lighting. These nodes were mounted onto panels which were then suspended from t
