Italy - Rimini's Paradiso is one of the few clubs in the world able to boast a 50-year history. The venue, offering clients a breathtaking view from its vantage point overlooking the Adriatic Riviera, recently made front-page news when the new owners - Luca De Simone and Alessandro Volta - announced their intention to re-open the legendary Italian venue precisely 50 years after its original inauguration, undertaking to restore it to its position as one of Europe's leading venues, and adopting a Martin Audio sound system.
The club became by-word on the international club scene thanks to the far-sighted management between 1970 and 2001 of Gianni Fabbri - son of Mirti Fabbri, who had the original idea of converting her country villa into a top class venue in 1957. Now the venue has again undergone a substantial renovation and technical upgrade before reopening its doors again to a

UK - Watford Grammar School's new music centre, designed by Tim Ronalds Architects, has bnenefitted from treatment by Arup Acoustics. Additionally, ETC lighting and controls have been installed by Lighting Logic.
Raf Orlowski, director at Arup Acoustics, says, "Around 15 years ago, Arup Acoustics carried out a survey of music facilities in schools for the then DfES and found inadequate conditions in many instances; pupils practicing in corridors, music classes blighted by extraneous noise and band rehearsals in totally inappropriate acoustic environments. This survey led eventually to the publication in 2004 of a government directive, Building Bulletin 93, which has resulted in a massive change in the acoustic quality of new music facilities and school buildings in general.
"The new Watford Music Centre at Watford Grammar School epitomises the best intentions

Germany - The largest Martin LC Series LED wall to date graced the fourth annual Bundesvision Song Contest, an annual music competition created by German TV entertainer Stefan Raab. Broadcast live on 14 February on German network ProSieben, Bundesvision Song Contest 2008 saw 16 music acts representing Germany's 16 federal states compete in a Grand Prix type format at the TUI Arena in Hanover.
The set design for this year's show was dominated by an immense 29m x 14m semi-transparent Martin LC Series LED wall located upstage. Built from more than 200 LC 2140 panels, the LED wall covered 406sq.m and had a physical resolution of 725 x 350 pixels. A further 32sq.m of LC panels were used on a 7m high moving catwalk. A single LC panel 'door' allowed presenters a unique way to enter the catwalk and set through the LED wall.
Visual content for the LED walls and projections was created
Denmark - Bilka is a popular Danish chain of hypermarkets, those big box stores where consumers can purchase just about anything for the home, including groceries. Bilka's original store in Tilst, a suburb of Aarhus, recently installed Martin Professional smartMAC colour changing profile spot luminaires in the store's electronics department with the goal of drawing more people into the area.
Consumer electronics, including a surge in the sale of high definition televisions, is a rapidly growing segment. Yet stiff competition, also from online stores, as well as pressure from ever dropping prices, led Bilka to renovate the department in order to increase its visibility.
That visibility included a number of changes: new product divisions within the department, a wall of televisions displayed in HD, and the use of eye-catching lighting effects visible from all over the store - a
UK - Audiovisualbay.co.uk is a new web-based sales resource that has been launched by Hertfordshire event production company Universal Event Production (UEP). It is designed to help companies of all types all around the world sell equipment they no longer use or need.
UEP's Steve Butcher comments: "We had bits of kit here collecting dust for ages which we always meant to sell on, but never got around to doing anything about it for a variety of reasons ......and I kept encountering people in this exact same situation. A major reason no-one was selling their unwanted kit was that they didn't have the time to get it together - it was always last on the agenda and something that no-one ever got around to. Also, until now, EBAY was the only serious option to reach a wide audience."
Butcher has decided to take advantage of this gap in the market with Audiovisualbay, making
UK - Michael Northen was a founding member of the Association of Lighting Designers and its President for many years. He was very supportive of the work of young lighting designers entering the profession, and set up a student bursary shortly before his death in 2001.

The ALD awards the bursary each year in conjunction with The Mousetrap Foundation, an organisation committed to encouraging young theatre practitioners and which manages the fund.

They used three grandMA full-size and one grandMA light to control an extensive array of light.
"Imagine the challenge the designing team had when creating an environment of close to 350 moving lights and several dozen conventional units, where the entire lighting rig is hidden behind a roof system where the beams focus through strategically placed openings in the canvas, helping create the elite, clean, and pristine feel that Mercedes Benz is known for," says Fyssicopulos.
"The programming of the booth was done on three grandMA full-size and one grandMA light. Two consoles where at

"It's a big theatre for the region," notes technical director Pat Hill. "We were at the point where we needed new followspots. We had upgraded the rest of our lighting, and the intensity
UK - Recently playing in the New Players Theatre in London, Make Me A Song is a vehicle for the heart-felt lyrics of William Finn, creator of, amongst others, the Tony Award-winning Falsettosand the Broadway hit The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Directed by Andrew McBean, the work is a highly collaborative and continually evolving piece with a history of 14 producers, the original conceiver and director Rob Ruggerio and the writer Willam Finn all involved during its evolution. Rogers was also responsible for the set and video design and covered the on-site production management, so precision planning and time management was paramount.
UK - Entertainment technology supplier A.C. Lighting has launched a new video division to provide a complete solution for lighting rental companies looking to make their first move into video.
A.C. Video was formed in response to huge demand the company has received in the past few years for 'creative LED' systems which bridge the gap between lighting and video. This includes the enormous success of the Chroma-Q Color Web LED display surface exclusively distributed by the company, which has been a regular fixture on high profile light entertainment television shows and concert tours.
After gaining several year's experience providing this complex new technology, and extensive research into all products in the market, A.C. decided to provide a complete video turnkey solution to enable its existing lighting customers and upcoming visual designers to make the smooth transition int

USA - Zorro the musical, a new production based which features an impressive display of flamenco dancing, sword-fighting and acrobatics, was lit by Ben Ormerod who has worked extensively in theatre and opera.
"I began with the simple plan that the show should look unlike any musical that I had seen before. My background is mainly focused on classical theatre and dance and ballet. As soon as I read the script and the novel that the script was based on, it was clear to me that the show was going to need a tungsten look."
"We had a limited space on the rig so I knew a generic rig wouldn't do. Everything had to move to get the most out of the space we had. That included the tungsten source and I knew the only moving tungsten unit for this was the MAC TW1."
"The show needed to have a strong Californian sunlight as this was a very important element, and yo
USA - The closing event for the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a two day - and night - event in Miami's Bicentennial Park. With more than 150 electronic music artists, DJs, and producers on ten stages and over 40,000 music fans from around the world in attendance, UMF is billed as the largest music festival of its kind in the US.
Designer Stephen Lieberman, president of SJ Lighting, has been lighting the UMF since its inception and certainly had his hands full with the ten-year anniversary where five stages needed a lot of production support. "The stage designs are not typically designed around specific equipment," comments Lieberman. "In a festival environment, there are basic needs and requirements that need to get fulfilled. We chose gear that suits those needs, and then we tried to put some 'bells and whistles'

Martin lighting gear is supplied to Crazy Daisy directly by Martin Scandinavia with lighting design by Martin Scandinavia's Frank Ovesen.
Each Crazy Daisy club functions as an independent discotheque, each venue distinct and customized to fit the personality of the city it calls home. This is particularly important in provincial towns like Viborg and Skive says Henrik Karlsen,

China - Beijing has become a hot spot for avant-garde architecture as the world pays more attention to the city's building boom. Many of the world's great architects have bold structures sprouting all over the city, with such descriptive nicknames as the bird's nest, twisted doughnut and eggshell. Even surrounded by such ultra-modern marvels, the New Poly Plaza in Beijing stands tall as a bold landmark building. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), it is recognized as one of the most innovative architectural designs in the world. The building incorporates 24 stories of office space built around a 90m tall atrium enclosed by the world's largest cable-net-supported glass wall.
The challenge for lighting designers was to enhance the magnificence of the building and ensure it would stand out as a distinctive addition to the city's nighttime landscape, while combining tradit
