Australia - Located on the corner of Roe and William Streets in Northbridge, the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia features the 575 seat Heath Ledger Theatre and the flexible performance space, Studio Underground, capable of seating 200+. Also included in the centre is The Courtyard, a multi-purpose outdoor events space, two rehearsal rooms and two flexible use private suites.

Designed by award-winning Kerry Hill Architects, the design delivers a building which not only provides a functional and inspiring venue for performers and their audiences, but is also a defining architectural landmark for Perth.

Jands supplied and commissioned all the technical equipment throughout the venue except for the in-house audio installation, which was supplied by Jands, but installed by Perth-based Vizcom Technologies.

MilTec (UK) Ltd will be showing a host of new audio and lighting products at PLASA 2011, including the latest in its range of LED luminaires, the LEDHead EPW multi-function LED moving head.

The LEDHead EPW uses the latest LED technology to give a moving head with true spot and wash capabilities, says the company. The 60W white LED light engine, colour wheel, two gobo wheels and rotating prism provide the spot functions.

Wash lighting is provided by eight high powered tricolour LEDs situated at the front of the unit. This allows both functions to be used independently or simultaneously, expanding its applications for creative lighting design. In addition to these functions, the tricolour LEDs are arranged in four zones to provide visual effect capabilities.

Robert Juliat will be showing its Aledin 630 LED profile and the new Aledin 330 LED wash light - the latter for the first time at PLASA 2011. The new, variable beam angle, 85W LED Aledin wash light is a complement to the award-winning Robert Juliat Aledin 630 LED profile spot.

Initially aimed at television studios, Robert Juliat says broader interest in the Aledin wash is growing, with exhibition halls and theatres also choosing to take advantage of its qualities.

Lionel Garraud, Robert Juliat sales director, says: "The feedback we are receiving is that customers find the Aledin wash a very powerful LED product which is easy to daisy chain and produces a clean, even beam. The dimming is very smooth with no 'stepping', its strobe feature is useful for concert lighting and the choice of colour temperature lends itself well to exhibition work. The result is a very versatile unit th

Turkey - Istanbul has become home to the latest incarnation of Billionaire Club, the upscale nightclub brand owned by Italian tycoon and Formula One entrepreneur Flavio Briatore.

The club, located inside Istanbul's fashionable Edition Hotel, recreates the same combination of cuisine and after-dinner entertainment that originated at the first Billionaire Club on the jet-set getaway of Costa Smeralda in Sardinia.

Inside, the space has been conceived as a glimmering disco ballroom accessed via a dramatic staircase that descends into the main. Guests entering the space are immediately struck by the lighting - a composition of Clay Paky Alpha Wash 300s and Spot HPE 300s, and architectural LED lighting.

The concept here is one of absolute luxury, designed for the local jet-setters who flock to the club for the vibe as well as the music performed by top international DJs. French in

Lighting designer Nicholas Michaletos' rig contained 80 Robe moving lights, which were the core of the lighting, supplied by locally based MGG productions - plus a large generic rig - all of which was programmed and run by MGG's Kevin Rieck using a grandMA console.

The lighting design was based around a set and production design by Wayne Sproule of Pendragon Dezign. He gave Michaletos a very clear idea of what he wanted in terms of lighting aesthetics, and the result was a slick and smooth fusion of classical theatrical and televisual styles.

UK - Event lighting company Utopium Lighting has augmented its growing stock of LED fixtures with a recent investment in Philips Selecon PLTR2 RGBAW (ColorBlaze) luminaires.

Supplied by Philips Entertainment's UK distributor Architainment Lighting, Utopium has reported that they've barely seen the luminaires since they were delivered. This, they say, is because the ColorBlazes only come back into the warehouse long enough to be prepped and tested before they're loaded back onto the truck and sent out on the next event.

Sam Garland, production manager for Utopium says the decision to go with the Selecon PLTR2 RGBAW (ColorBlaze) was based on the ratio of power economy to light output along with the fast rigging time. "Primarily we were looking to replace our existing cyclorama lighting options," Garland explains. "The Philips Selecon PLTR2 RGBAW (ColorBlaze) offers massi

UK - Ian Kirby, who originally set up Martin Professional's UK operation, has taken on the role of SGM's head of sales in the UK, as Peter Johansen, director of R&D and strategic sales development, looks to reassemble key members of his former team.

When the Dane was appointed to head up the new R&D initiative last year, he recruited members of his old R&D team, tasking them with "developing a groundbreaking portfolio". He then turned his attention to international sales and Ian Kirby.

Kirby's role with SGM will run in parallel to his own company, LED Projects Ltd - the Kent based distribution and installation operation, which will double as SGM's UK sales office.

Kirby has already secured a major breakthrough for the Italian lighting manufacturers, with the installation of quantities of their new LED Balls in Mayfair's prestigious Playboy Club, while another large

Israel - SGM has appointed Tel Aviv-based Halilit to be its exclusive territorial distributor.

Operating as an importer, distributor and retailer, the company - set up by the Greenspoon family 70 years ago - is now in its third generation. They have worked for 20 years with SGM's parent company, RCF, which forms part of a strong portfolio of MI and pro audio brands - all represented on a sole basis.

Stated Halilit's Eitan Glickman, "The arrival of SGM within the RCF Group is timed perfectly with our plans to get into lighting. It is the natural partnership for our professional PA department."

In May, Halilit held a seminar at its facility providing the opportunity for the Italian manufacturers to introduce themselves to the local market and demonstrate their products, and the changes that have given them a competitive edge.

UK - When Daybreak, a UK TV breakfast show, was launching at the end of last year, it wanted to do so with a flourish. Not only did the station spend a great deal of money enticing stars from other channels, but they knew the studio needed to look great.

The studio, on the south bank of London's River Thames, would have windows on three sides, and be facing the iconic St Paul's Cathedral. In winter time, when it first comes on air at 6am, it will be dark, with it gradually getting brighter until there would potentially be full sunlight streaming through the windows by the end of the programme at 9:25am.

Lighting director Matt Carter looked to technology to solve the lighting problems that presented. Employing Stage Electrics, he first had £130,000 worth of dimmable 2.5m high glass windows installed, which, when attached to an ETC Paradigm control system, automatic

USA - Delaware -based Main Light Industries has added Clay Paky Sharpy moving beam lights, Alpha Profile 700, and Alpha Spot HPE 1500 fixtures to its growing inventory of rental equipment.

Main Light, which serves all lighting markets from theatrical to touring, has become one of the largest rental houses in the US. After initially purchasing Sharpy fixtures earlier this year, the company has reinforced its Clay Paky offerings by acquiring the Alpha units.

"The features and quality of the Clay Paky fixtures uniquely position them in the market," notes Randy Mullican at Main Light. "We like the speed of the Sharpy - the unit is extremely fast and the beam projects out of the Sharpy incredibly far. They have no problem cutting through 1500-watt fixtures on stage."

Mullican cites the low noise level of the Alpha 700, which enables it to be used in theatre en

UK - White Light, the exclusive UK distributor for the Robert Juliat range of lighting fixtures, has recently supplied 18 of Juliat's Lancelot 4000W followspots to two other lighting rental companies, HSL and Neg Earth.

With a 4kHTI lamp and a beam adjustable from 2-5?, Lancelot is a followspot designed for the largest of venues and biggest of shows, giving a high output and a precise, controllable beam over even the longest of throws. This made it the perfect choice for shows by JLS - which HSL supplied from 12 of their newly purchased units - and Take That, which Neg Earth supplied from their new stock of six Lancelots. Lancelots are also in use on Shrek at London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane and on The Wizard of Oz at The London Palladium, as part of a rig supplied by White Light.

UK - Pixled will launch its new F-9 LED surface at the 2011 PLASA Light & Sound show at London's Earls Court Exhibition Centre in September.

This capitalises on the "phenomenal success" of the fully flexible - bends both ways - Pixled F-6 surface that was launched at last year's PLASA.

The design and architecture for the 9mm pitch F-9 features all the same dynamic characteristics that have proved so popular with the F-6 - high resolution, light weight, very easy to build and set up, curvable in both directions - both concave and convex.

F-6 and F-9 modules can be mixed and fitted together if desired in the same quick-lock touring frames. These utilise the rapid hanging and footprint system that has proved such a winner for touring and temporary installation environments.

Like the F-6, F-9 is also available with standard Pixled or super-HD resolution Mitsubishi pr

UK - Lighting designer Andy Mahaffey specified a Jands Vista T2 console, running the next generation Vista v2 software, to control nearly 100 moving lights plus a large generic rig for the 2011 Pepper Live event, a week of performances staged at the Centenary Theatre, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.

This high profile annual event, which is always sold out, raises money for the Pepper Foundation, a charity that funds the Pepper Children's Nurses managed by the Iain Rennie Hospice at Home Service. They provide professional home care round-the-clock on a call-out basis for seriously ill children throughout the counties of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
