USA - Harman Professional has announced the appointment of Brian Friborg to lead US sales, group-wide as USA vice president of sales, Harman Professional. Friborg, who previously held the position of president, Americas for Martin Professional, immediately assumes responsibility for sales and support of Harman Professional audio and lighting technologies in the United States. He will report directly to Scott Robbins, Harman Professional Executive Vice President, Worldwide Sales.

UK - Pop rockers McFly celebrated 10 years at the forefront of the music industry with panache and some help from Robe's latest technology ... in four sold-out shows at London's Royal Albert Hall.

The RAH's Lighting department were appointed as lighting contractors and senior technical manager Ollie Jeffery contacted award winning international lighting designer Tim Routledge to create a design using their own extensive house rig - featuring 130 moving lights - plus a large quantity of 'specials' including 24 x Robe Robin Pointes and 40 x Robe Robin LEDBeam 100s.

These were supplied by Brighton based TSL. Project manager Frankie Du Toit organised WYSIWYG, patch and systems liaising with Routledge directly on behalf of the Hall.

The Netherlands / USA - Networking specialists ELC Lighting and Green-GO Communications will be presenting developments to their product ranges at LDI, in conjunction with StageLight, on booth 321 from the 22-24 November at the Las Vegas Convention Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada.

New software from ELC, derived from continuing experience gained through working on live events, is now available as dmXLAN v4. This completely revised freeware programme for Windows and OSX recognizes that managing the Ethernet network on live events has become a specialist role within the technical team in recent years.

ELC's software engineers often freelance on shows where they take responsibility for maintaining the integrity of data networks that distribute data for lighting, automation, LED screen and communications to distributed areas of the rig and dmXLAN v4 is the tool designed to do that job.

UK - The newly re-opened Albany Theatre in Coventry is the latest Central Theatre Supplies customer to purchase a Zero88 Orb XF lighting console.

The theatre which reopened in February 2013 had been dark for four years and having discovered their own console had been badly damaged in storage , the theatre was loaned a Strand Console by the Royal Shakespeare Company. When it came to replacing the console , Stephen Hocking from the Albany had already experienced the Orb XF supplied to the Palace Theatre Redditch (where he used to crew) and realised that this was the desk for them.

An onsite demo by Richard Lambert of Zero88 saw the Orb XF connected and patched easily to the theatres own DMX network and tasks which the crew had struggled to do effectively on the Strand console, were achieved quickly and easily.

UK - The first ever Technical Theatre Awards (TTA) - celebrating the best of 'behind the scenes' skill and talent - were presented at a well-attended ceremony at the PLASA Show at London's ExCel.

Fifteen awards were announced on the Theatres Trust stand in the midst of the PLASA hubbub.

UK - Robe lighting enjoyed a super busy 2013 PLASA exhibition at its new location of ExCeL London, where they showcased nine new products and won their third PLASA Innovation Award.

Robe's CEO Josef Valchar comments, "We are really happy. UK - All the endeavours that have gone into promoting SGM's G-Spot LED moving head paid dividends when the IP65 rated fixture was to pick up a top award at the prestigious PLASA Awards for Innovation in October.

A packed audience gathered to see SGM CEO Peter Johansen collect the coveted prize from PLASA chairman, Ed Pagett in a ceremony at the ExCeL's AudioLab Arena during this year's PLASA Show in London, as Association CEO Matthew Griffiths made the announcements.

South Korea - Since 1993 'Open Concert' has been one of the most enduringly popular music programmes on Korean TV. Aired every Sunday night for an hour on KBS (Korean Broadcasting System), it's staged in the KBS Hall at the broadcaster's HQ in Yeouido, Seoul in front of a live audience of nearly 1700.

Lighting for the show is designed by KBS's Mr Lee Kwan Han working closely with the KBS lighting design team. Currently on the rig for the weekly show are 40 x Robe Robin 1200 LEDWashes and 38 MMX Spots which were purchased earlier in the year by the KBS Hall to be added to their house lighting system.

They are proving ideal for lighting the show, giving Mr Lee all the creative latitude he needs to produce a rich and varied collection of looks and scenes for the different artists each week.

UK - Manchester lighting specialist dbn supplied rigging, lighting equipment and design plus bespoke draping for the Co-Operative Retail Trading Group (CRTG) annual Supporters Awards and gala dinner event, which was staged at Manchester Central.

Pete Robinson project managed for dbn. Both he and the company have been involved in the event for the last six years, each time working closely with technical production management providers A To V and also directly with the client, to interpret their brief and help bring the venue alive with the atmospheres required.

This year's award was for the SuperNova 3 software, which enables system-wide control of RDM devices across an Art-Net network. SuperNova 3 offers the perfect tool for production electricians or system technicians to monitor, configure and display their rig status in real-time. USA - Based in Southern California Stephen Lieberman has been lighting clubs and discos for 25 years - at least half of that time under his company, SJ Lighting. But he is equally at home providing production for major festivals such as the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC).

Asked about his profile, Lieberman says, "I'd like to consider myself a part of the electronic dance music community as well as a part of the nightclub community. I've grown up in this industry; I embrace it, support it and do my very best to perpetuate it."

UK - Registration is now open for the second annual White Light Open Day, held at White Light in Wimbledon on Sunday, 27 October. The entertainment lighting specialist announced the return of its open day earlier this year, after the success of the event in 2012.

The White Light Open Day, a free event aimed at those working in small theatres, performance venues, schools, and colleges, attracted 200 visitors in 2012 with attendees coming from across London and elsewhere in the UK. All were looking to improve their lighting knowledge, demo the latest kit, or meet with White Light staff.

UK - PLASA London 2013 proved a great success with exhibitors and visitors alike at its new home at ExCeL London. Over 11,000 visitors (subject to ABC audit) attended the show, of whom over 3,000 attended on multiple days. International interest was high, with more than 2,200 visitors from 84 countries. Stand rebookings for next year's show are also up on last year, and several major companies that did not make the move to ExCeL - including Philips Entertainment - have either already signed up for 2014 or are in serious talks to return.

Germany - This year's Oktoberfest in Munich was illuminated Leader Light. Approximately 6.4m guests came to Munich to be a part of the event of the year.

For many years on the 16 pylons in the tent featured PAR 56 spots (300Watt each). This year these luminaries have been replaced by Leader Light's energy-saving Stage beams, the same LED fixtures which were used at Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmo.

"We are very happy with the result because we didn't think, that LEDs are able to produce such a effective light and beam," said the architect. "Next year we will definitely use Leader Light's lighting again."

UK - Virgin Trains has invested in revolutionary LED lighting technology at Birmingham International Railway Station; this will significantly reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs.

In a bid to create more energy efficient railway stations, Virgin Trains has tasked Lorne Stewarts Facilities Services Division PLC to find innovative ways to reduce energy consumption at stations maintained by Virgin. In the latest phase of this project, Lorne Stewart PLC has used AVA branded LED lighting products to light up parts of Birmingham International Railway Station.

Lighting accounts for a significant amount of energy usage and AVA LED technology was specifically chosen by Lorne Stewart as a cost effective route in achieving 90 percent reductions in power consumption, when compared to outdated lighting technologies.

USA - Harman Professional Division has confirmed the integration of Martin Professional US operations into its organization effective immediately.

The combining of Harman and Martin will result in operational efficiencies, including the closure of Martin's operations in Sunrise, Florida. The company will maintain a strong sales and product support presence in the Fort Lauderdale area and all staff from the facility have been offered positions within the Harman Professional organization, says the company.
