Germany/UK - Last month, SUSE made its initial public offering debut on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. In response to the limitations of physical events brought on by the pandemic and in lieu of being at the Deutsche Börse in person, SUSE reinvented the entire listing day experience with a digital-first approach.
SUSE collaborated with Deloitte Digital, using technical solutions specialist White Light (WL’s) SmartStage in London, to create an entirely virtual experience that could reach its global audience.

USA - For all six seasons of Fox’s award-winning television series Empire, lighting programmer Jared Moore used a variety of Hog control products for the show’s diverse performance settings and other scenes. The American musical drama was one of the most-watched series during its long run through 2020. After a quick run on the US shoot for Warner Brothers The Batman, Moore next turned his focus to work on Power Book IV: Force, Starz's spin-off based on original Power character Tommy Egan.
Jared began his career in 2002 as a freelance LD in Chicago, coming of age through the theater scene and designing for a modern dance company on ETC desks. In 2013 he transitioned into television and film work, where he learned of the Hog platform. He says, “I was told by another programmer that all the film guys used Hog. I worked on the ABC show Mind Games where

UK The landmark Nottingham Castle reopens this month following a £30m refurbishment which started in 2018. Part of the new look is an Anolis exterior LED lighting scheme illuminating all four sides of the building, comprising 17 x Anolis Divine 160 fixtures which was designed by Ian Forrow of IJF Lighting and commissioned by On Event Production from Castle Donnington.
Electrical installation and fixtures were supplied by Amptron Electrical Services who were the appointed electrical contractor for the whole project which included the external lighting.
The original fortified castle dates to Medieval times but that structure was largely demolished by the mid-17th century, with a mansion built on the site in the 1670s by the first and second Dukes of Newcastle. This was burnt down by rioters in 1831 and rebuilt in the 1870s to house an art gallery and museum which remain

USA - The Kridel Grand Ballroom at the Portland Art Museum is a historic 9,000-sq.ft. space with soaring ceilings and rich architectural details that has played host to many of the city’s premiere events for decades. With its full proscenium stage, sound, lighting and projection systems, the venue is tailor-made for elegant gala fundraisers, corporate meetings, and weddings.
Chris Pitale, senior AV tech at the museum, oversaw a recent lighting upgrade in the Grand Ballroom that included Elation Professional Fuze Pendant LED downlights and Netron data distribution from Obsidian Control Systems.
“We set about planning an upgrade with Netron hardware and simultaneously had been eyeballing our aging house lighting system for upgrade,” Pitale explains, referring to an old system of 32 recessed 250W incandescent par cans that cast bad shadows due to placement of a trus

USA - The outdoor stage at the Avondale Brewing Company in Birmingham, AL, was smaller than the ones Pigeons Playing Ping Pong normally plays on, probably not much more than 30ft in length. But adaptation is the order of the day as live music returns throughout much of the USA.
The size of the stage didn’t matter much; breaking rules and flying off in wonderfully unexpected creative directions can take place in any space. The popular jam band provided proof of that recently when they improvised their way through two upbeat sets filled with energy and original musical turns.
Flowing with them on this freewheeling journey was their long-time lighting designer, Manny Newman. Described by the quartet as “the fifth member of the band”, Newman also proved that limited space is no obstacle to limitless ideas. His expansive show filled the stage and the entire venue with

Belgium - Adapting in order to overcome adversity is nothing new to Van Marke Plumbing Supply. Founded on the eve of the Great Depression in 1929, the family-owned business has met challenges, from stock market crashes to war over the past nine decades, as it’s grown from a single location in West Flanders to a global leader in healthy water and heating solutions with operations in Benelux, France, Malta, Switzerland and the United States.
In keeping with its philosophy of adapting in the face of adversity, the company is livestreaming to reach its 1,300 global employees during the lockdown. This initiative began with a colourful and entertaining event produced by Flexivent.
Contributing to the open and friendly atmosphere of the livestreamed event was an engaging lighting design by Cedric De Reu that drew on the colour-rendering prowess of Chauvet Professional COLOR

Award-winning director Phil Heyes approached Tom to bring his fresh modernist style to the bigger picture and he came in with a rock ‘n’ roll-style design carefully balanced for television.

Season 4 of the show on ABC was the first time American Idol has been run without an audience - due to

Since 1977 the company has called the Tolethorpe Hall home, with the concreted stepped amphitheatre allowing them to recreate the Shakespearian magic in the same environment it was written for.
Looking to upgrade the existing house rig from 1KW fresnels and frame scrollers, to modern LED replacements, Grant Witton, Stamford Shakespeare Company’s technical manager, chose Prolights Fresnels, which he purchased through A.C. Entertainment Technologies (AC-ET).
Grant comments, “We needed something to replace the aging and slightly noisy scrollers, but we also wanted a fixture that allowed us to colour match seamlessly with gels in the other fixtures in the rig. We looked into many different LED Fre

Australia - Canberra-based Elite Event Technology (EET) supplied full production - lighting, audio, video, and staging - for the 2021 Australian Hotels Association (AHA) Awards, which took place outdoors for the first time as 450 guests enjoyed the environs of the Pialligo Estate and the gastronomy of one of Canberra’s top restaurants in an immersive setting that embraced the natural beauty of the ACT region.
EET’s Darren Russell designed lighting for the event in which he has been involved for the last 15 years. He made the most of the flexibility of 46 Astera AX1 PixelTubes and 16 Astera AX5 TriplePars for illuminating the tables, flora and fauna, and helping to build a magical atmosphere for the evening.
The AX1s were mainly used on the tabletops where they served as long, elegant centrepieces, providing subtle but practical ambient illumination for dining, cha

Italy - Two years after launching Alchemy 5, DTS Lighting has decided to expand its range of Fresnel wash moving heads. Alchemy 7 is designed to extend the range and offer a more powerful option.
DTS’s Alchemy line already caught attention in the theatre and television industries over the last few years for its high quality of light, extended colour palette and versatility.
Alchemy 7 was launched on 16 June on the company’s social media platforms, with one of its focal points being its quality light. Like its predecessors, Alchemy 7 features a six-colour chip LED source that allows to recreate a wide range of shades, especially when it comes to pastel tones.
Its tungsten emulation function will allow the LED projector to generate the same effect of halogen lamps on the dimming curve. From a technical standpoint, Alchemy 7 presents some impressive new feature

USA - Located at the mouth of Padre Canyon in southwestern Utah, Tuacahn Amphitheatre offers an impressive setting.
Along with this splendour, however, comes another side of nature: harsh, wildly fluctuating weather. “The theatre is subjected to every kind of environmental challenge, including rain, high wind, dust, 100-plus degree temps, and even snow this April,” says Cory Pattak, a New York based lighting designer. “The conventional pars and ellipsoidals here have taken a beating over the years.”
Since Pattak’s first show at Tuacahn, the theatre has been working to upgrade its rig to include more outdoor rated fixtures. Last year, during the pandemic lockdown, it took a major step in this direction when its production manager Craig Engel, with assistance from Pattak, replaced its old incandescent units with 58 Ovation E-910FC IP fixtures from Chauvet Profe

UK - It has been a tough year for the entire industry and none more so than those studying the performing arts, with colleges having to radically re-think not just the teaching process and online learning, but also the realisation of practical coursework modules.
Second-year students on the Creative Lighting Control (CLC) and Lighting Design (LD) courses at the UK’s Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance thought out of the box and forged ahead with the staging of their annual Live Event project, delivering a full programme of music entertainment in a fully covid compliant environment.
The action took place at the 330-capacity Rose Theatre on the college’s Sidcup, Kent campus, comprising a series of shows featuring the talents of four live artists – two solo acts, a band, and a DJ – with performances either livestreamed by the Lighting Design students

UK - The Brit Awards 2021 was staged at the O2 Arena, London, featuring an elegant and dynamic production design by Es Devlin and Yinka Ilori with lighting created by Al Gurdon. The live broadcast event celebrated some of the best British and international music and broke ground as the first major indoor live music event with an audience – of key and frontline workers – since the pandemic shut down of March 2020.
Hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall, and aired on ITV, the live line-up included Coldplay, Dua Lipa, Elton John, The Weeknd, Griff, Rag’n’Bone Man, Pink & The Greenwich & Lewisham NHS Choir, Headie One and several more.
Al Gurdon worked alongside a lighting programming team comprising Alex Mildenhall looking after the show’s ‘effect’ lights using a grandMA3 full-size console running grandMA3 software, and Ross Williams who took care of all

The Netherlands - Visual Productions has expanded its presence in the architectural segment with the development of the DaliCore, a smart lighting controller for the DALI protocol.

The web interface offers a sophisticated commissioning tool for discovering ballasts, setting addresses and creating scenes. The DaliCore is fluent in controlling DT6 and DT8 fixtures. As an application controller, the DaliCore can work with DALI actuators like sensors and switches, making autonomous decisions and control DALI lights accordingly.

USA - Toby Keith kicked off his Country Comes To Town tour at the Denny Sanford Premier Centre in Sioux Falls, SD on Thursday May 20.
Stepping onto the stage, the country superstar became the first major artist to embark on a tour since the start of the pandemic 14 months earlier. For the happy fans in attendance that night, Keith’s appearance represented not only a chance to enjoy live music again, but a reunion with an old and treasured friend.
“The connection with the audience has always been a big part of who Toby is,” said Seth Jackson of Darkroom Creative, who along with his partner, Nathan Alves handled the lighting, video and production design for the multi-city tour. “From the earliest days of his career, Toby has developed an especially close rapport with fans, doing things like bringing soldiers on stage to express his gratitude for their service, an

USA - The fountain at Cary’s Downtown Park, in Cary NC, has quickly become a landmark in the town since its construction in 2017.
The fountain has served as a backdrop to lighting displays marking celebrations and causes that are important to townspeople. This has included being illuminated in the rainbow of colours symbolising LGBTQ+ Pride Month every June.
This year, however, the fountain was temporarily decommissioned as part of a larger park renovation project. Moving quickly, the city turned to another nearby landmark, the historic Cary Arts Centre. By the start of June, the centre, which traces its roots back to the 19th century, was glowing with a brilliant display of Pride Month colours.
“With the fountain shut down right now as part of a renovation, we needed to come up quickly with an alternate way to celebrate, which led to the selection of the Art
