Lokma restaurant serves fresh sound with Flipside

Combining traditional cuisine into a contemporary setting has been flooding the London restaurant scene in the last few years and thanks to technical assistance from Flipside AV, Lokma guests will enjoy musical entertainment alongside a menu deeply infused with culture and tradition.
Having already designed a successful system at the Lokma restaurant in Bermondsey, Flipside were called upon once again to make the Stratford location work just as well. James Cooper, managing director at Flipside recalls: “It took a bit of planning to work out the space as a whole – being split across multiple levels, while still being quite open, it’s a slightly unusual space to work with, but I’m really proud of the system we designed to overcome these types of architectural challenges.”
The restaurant design team wanted the space to feel intimate from an audio perspective, even with a naturally reverberant area at the front main entrance. “The best way to overcome that is to just use a lot more speakers,” says Cooper. “We added in a Yamaha MTX5D Matrix Processor to help balance off all the different areas, so none of them end up fighting each other for more coverage. There was quite a bit of tweaking to do, but logistically, it worked out really well.”
Copying over a similar set up for the Bermondsey location, Flipside installed separate pairs of Yamaha VXS5’s in the Mezzanine as well as the first-floor dining area. A TW Audio B14i subwoofer was added to the DJ area accompanied by wall panel controls throughout the varying levels of the space to allow optimal sound control for staff members.
“Flipside were great,” says Alex, general manager of Lokma Stratford. “They did a bit of extra tweaking for us at so we can now control the entire restaurant as a whole or have it split up if we want to. For most of the time during the day, it’s just one button that does the whole area and then we can adjust as and when we need, for example for special events or DJ nights. To have this option functions perfectly with the staff’s workflow.”
From top to bottom, Lokma Stratford boasts an inviting atmosphere. The once empty storage unit at the top floor can now host private functions as it’s been refurbished with funky, bright colours and stylish seating. In addition, a new shisha terrace serving traditional cocktails promises to be the crown jewel of the recently opened venue and may require Flipside to help provide the background music.
Alex concludes: “I couldn’t fault Flipside in any way during the whole install process – they were incredibly helpful; everything works as it should and I will definitely be calling them up again for further assistance very soon.”
