Lighting Design Alliance of Signal Hill, California was called upon to create the eye-catching look. Scott Hatton, Principal of Lighting Design Alliance, commented, "The façade is a white semi-transparent fabric that conceals a fairly uninteresting building that had no exterior lighting at all. As this was an existing building that was being converted from just a racetrack to both a racetrack and a casino it was critical to clean up the façade cheaply and quickly and to light it in a way that would draw people in and create a feeling of anticipation and excitement."
Lighting Design Alliance chose the new Martin Exterior 1200 colour changer for the general façade wash and Phoenix framing projectors for the Philadelphia Park sign. The Exterior 1200 Wash is Martin's new 1200W outdoor luminaire with full colour mixing and full 0-100% intensity control. Weatherproof rated at IP65, the fixture also features a range of optical systems, ellipsoidal beam shapers and other optical accessories. The Exterior 1200s are programmed to display static colours with only occasional colour changes and were programmed by Mark Pranzini on a self contained, rack-mounted Maxxyz PC. Maxxyz PC is an off-line and online editing tool that gives full functionality of Martin's Maxxyz lighting controller from the convenience of a PC or laptop.
Three Exterior 1200 Wash are mounted to 15 foot poles with two located on the roof of the Porte Cochere. The fixtures are all set as a wide flood and are located roughly 50-60 feet back from the building. "The fixtures were easily rotated and aimed for uniform coverage," says Scott Hatton. "The colours are great - real saturated. We picked the Exterior 1200 because it was the least expensive option and it involved the fewest number of fixtures. Total design and installation time was five and a half months which is extremely fast so Martin really came through for us there."
The project was completed in late 2006. Lighting Design Alliance completed the lighting design with assistance from Martin and Lighting Design's rep Rich Molinero. California Lighting Sales completed the layout.
