Martin, as a popular and respected player in both television and stage productions in China, participated with three days of informative seminars regarding the use and integration of intelligent lighting in all aspects of television. Held from 26 July to 1 August at the Hua Hai Hotel in Weihai, Shandong, on the Eastern coast, the seminars were organized by the Chinese Radio and Television Society and Martin Professional Hong Kong. In attendance were lighting designers from TV stations and production companies across the country.
Lecturers included Martin's International segment manager for stage, studio and event Lighting, Mark Ravenhill, who discussed the applications and techniques of using intelligent lighting in both television and live stage lighting scenarios; John Rayment of Fraser Rayment, who has designed the lighting for an enormously diverse range of productions and events, spoke on the lighting design challenges and solutions of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the philosophy of design, and the lighting of the Hong Kong harbour's Symphony of Lights - which Laservision recently completed; and Lars Carlsson of Make Up FX discussed techniques for television, along with practical lectures in character and special effects make up.
There were also lectures conducted in Mandarin by local Martin staff. Wong Kwok Kei covered advanced lighting control desks and programming techniques; and Wong Chun Lung, Wong Kwok Kei and Su Jian covered the emerging trend of merging video and lighting, and moving head maintenance tips. There were also lessons conducted by CCTV and Beijing Broadcasting Institute.
