The Milos roof structure boasts a 19m span and a clearance height of 9.4m

Norway - In a fusion of architecture, engineering and technology, structural solutions brand Milos (part of Area Four Industries) introduced the Invisible Roof. The structure was constructed in the city of Bergen, on the southwestern coast surrounded by mountains and fjords. Bergen has hosted some of the world’s largest bands, artists and an eclectic mix of music from all genres over many years.

One of the world’s oldest orchestras, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, dating back to 1765, celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2015 and remains a beacon of musical artistry on the world stage. On 22-23 August 2024, the orchestra hosted two outdoor concerts, offering a magical experience for musicians and audiences alike.

Partnering with Creative Technology Norway, Area Four Industries designed and installed a one-of-a-kind venue featuring an arched roof constructed from keder profiles and transparent canopies. This innovative design allowed the orchestra to perform under the open sky while being fully protected from the elements, ensuring the show went on without a hitch, come rain or shine.

This innovative structure is designed to provide weather protection without obstructing the scenic views and the Milos Invisible Roof is a testament to a game-changing modern design that harmonises with nature. Positioned prominently in the heart of Bergen, it is designed and crafted to enhance the stage performances and viewing capabilities with its canopy.

The Milos roof structure boasts a 19m span and a clearance height of 9.4m, providing an expansive stage deck of 20 x19m. Built for strength, the invisible roof can support up to 30 tonnes distributed across its six robust arches, each arch capable of bearing five tonnes of weight. Constructed with lightweight keder profiles, the roof is easy to assemble, and its revolutionary transparent canopy allows natural light to filter through while offering protection from the weather. The design also prioritises efficiency and adaptability making it an ideal solution for a wide range of events, from intimate concerts to large-scale productions. One of the most impressive aspects of the Milos invisible roof is its endless extendibility, making it versatile enough for events of any scale.

Creative Technology in Bergen has brought this innovative design to life, combining local expertise with cutting-edge engineering. The invisible roof is more than just a roof, it is the foundation for unforgettable performances, blending tradition with innovation to create extraordinary experiences that resonate with audiences and elevate the art of live music to new heights.

This approach emphasises Milos’s commitment to blending sustainability with cutting-edge design, not only changing what is possible in transparent architecture, but also redefining how people experience outdoor spaces in urban environments.
