UK - One of the south's largest University complexes, the University of the West of England in Bristol called in acoustic design company Munro Acoustics to design and build a new suite of recording studios to serve the expanding audio engineering department.

UWE Music & Multimedia technician, Richard Brown explained that their existing facility lacked isolation and was far too small so they chose Munro because they wanted to be confident of the best possible outcome. "We knew of Munro's reputation and we were not disappointed. In addition to being a good looking design, the new rooms are amazingly well isolated and acoustically perfect for what we needed, " he said. "As well as recording and mixing audio the rooms will be used for film dubbing and other audio applications, giving us complete flexibility."

The complex consists of a main live area which doubles as a teaching room, a live room with complete isolation and windows through each of two control rooms which feature Audient consoles.

Munro Acoustics' Andy Munro added, "With universities there is often a conflict between the need for good acoustics and the cost driven antics of developers and their contractors. It is great to work with clients who know enough about studios to insist on fully isolated rooms with excellent recording and monitoring environments. Too many projects end up with 'classroom' standard acoustics because they are not properly specified from the start. The result is a legal minefield where the lawyers sometimes earn more than the studio cost to build."
