As an independent union BECTU represents those working in broadcasting, film, theatre, entertainment, leisure, interactive media and allied areas. Primarily based in the UK. Featuring as part of the union's on-going services to its members, the course was tailored to their requirements, offering their members application based training.
Designed and presented by Simon Whitehorn for Orbital, 'Sound Fundamentals' dealt specifically with sound systems for theatre and the live entertainment industries. Covering a basic introduction to sound theory, the course was concentrated on giving the delegates as much hands-on experience as possible. The first day featured a number of such sessions, which highlighted the component parts of a sound system and how to interconnect them.
The second day focussed on more advanced topics, including the use of radio microphones, fold-back and in-ear monitor systems. Each topic was initially handled from a basic level, assuming no prior experience and developed in work groups.
BECTU's Kate Elliot commented: "BECTU is very pleased to be working in partnership with Orbital to organise high quality sound training. This is going to directly benefit those taking part to be more effective in their working lives. The recent two day course 'Sound Fundamentals' was very well received by delegates and all the feedback has been positive, particularly the standard of tuition by Simon Whitehorn. Simon was able to tailor his training to suit individual needs and levels of competence. Also singled out were the excellent training facilities at Orbital, and the fact that there is a clear progression route through sound training at all levels. BECTU strives to offer its membership ways in which to continue their professional development, and is keen to help those who work freelance to access high quality affordable training. We hope the partnership with Orbital will continue as well as it has started and that we will be able to work together in the near future."
Orbital's Chris Headlam says: "We understand that working in the digital domain technology changes at a very rapid pace. It's important to make those wishing to pursue a career in audio aware of the basics in this field. We're fortunate to not only have the latest equipment, but also the space and facilities to offer training. We annual co-jointly host training with The National Theatre for drama students nationwide and we're now also looking forward to collaborating with BECTU on such a regular basis, providing essential application based training."
